Student’S Perspectives Of Chronic Absenteeism In A Suburban High School, Herbert Allen Gray
Student’S Perspectives Of Chronic Absenteeism In A Suburban High School, Herbert Allen Gray
Theses and Dissertations
For many students, school attendance is a critical issue. There have been several studies conducted concerning attendance numbers. These studies have shown that poor attendance often affects grades, graduation rates, and socioeconomic status post-high school. The purpose of this study was to first investigate the reasons behind absences and attitudes towards school and classes because of missed days. The second purpose was to determine if a weekly mentoring meeting had any noticeable effect on attendance. The targeted pool of students consisted of those who had been identified as chronically absent the previous semester. An initial set of open-ended questions and …

Flowcharts Improve Periodontal Diagnosis By Dental And Dental Hygiene Students, Karo Parsegian, Srinivas Ayilavarapu, Tulsi Patel, Harold A Henson, Nikola Angelov
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
BACKGROUND: In 2017, the American Academy of Periodontology and the European Federation of Periodontology updated the classification of periodontal and peri-implant diseases and conditions. The goal of the present crossover study was to develop straightforward, illustrative flowcharts and determine their impact on the accuracy and speed of diagnosing periodontal conditions by predoctoral dental students (DS) and dental hygiene students (DHS).
METHODS: Two flowcharts (a decision-tree flowchart and one based on the periodontal disease/condition entity) were developed using updated diagnostic determinants proposed by the 2017 classification. A total of 26 second-, third-, and fourth-year DS (DS2, DS3, and DS4, respectively) and …
Secondary Administrators’ Perspectives On Their Involvement In And Barriers To Supporting Secondary Transition Programs For Students With Disabilities, Dottie H. Brown
Secondary Administrators’ Perspectives On Their Involvement In And Barriers To Supporting Secondary Transition Programs For Students With Disabilities, Dottie H. Brown
Theses and Dissertations
To address disparities in post-school outcomes for students with disabilities, federal legislation mandates appropriate education programs to include transition planning and programs for students with disabilities. Because administrators are held responsible for ensuring appropriate educational programs for all learners including those with disabilities, it is important to understand their perspectives on secondary transition; however, research on administrators’ involvement in secondary transition activities is limited. Using a single-state survey, this study examined the perspectives of secondary school administrators on their involvement and engagement in providing effective transition programs and services for students with disabilities and their perceptions of barriers to providing …

Students were also not electing to read independently during any free time they had in class. This research was designed to investigate how implementing a personalized e-book reading plan (PRP) affected students’ reading motivation and engagement during independent reading. The research questions that guided this study were: (a) How and to what extent do the personalized e-book reading plans impact students’ motivation to read? (b) How and to what extent …

Health Information-Seeking Behaviour Of People And Implications For School-Driven Hiv Prevention Programmes, Nkechinyere Charity Edeh, Chiedu Eseadi
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) has remained a social problem owing to the unavailability of a cure for the disease. Scholars have identified preventive behaviour as a remedy for the disease. Preventive behaviour is influenced by the information-seeking behaviour of individuals. This paper provides insight into people's health information-seeking behaviour concerning HIV prevention and implications for school-driven HIV prevention programmes. This was deemed necessary to encourage schools to brace up prevention efforts and foster understanding of what information students seek and how they seek such information particularly in this era of information and communication technology as this is very important for …

Teaching Archival Research Methods Through Projects In Ethnohistory, Veronica L. Denison, Alyssa Willett, Alexandra Taitt, Medeia Csoba Dehass
Journal of Western Archives
During the spring semester of 2015 and the fall semester of 2016, two cohorts of students at the University of Alaska Anchorage learned archival research skills as part of their methodological training in the course, Ethnohistory of Alaska Natives, which subsequently led to the development of further individual research projects. As part of the course, students provided metadata to folders within an archival collection. This article explores the semester long projects, including the hardships of finding and using culturally appropriate metadata, lessons learned, and the impact the project had on students, the archivist, and instructor.
