Using Portfolios To Develop L2 Cultural Knowledge And Awareness Of Students In Intermediate Spanish, Lina Lee
Using Portfolios To Develop L2 Cultural Knowledge And Awareness Of Students In Intermediate Spanish, Lina Lee
Languages, Literatures & Cultures
In spite of many efforts and contributions from previous researchers, the need for a systematic and consistent approach to teaching culture is still unmet. This pilot study shows that the portfolio is a meaningful way to integrate language and culture in a structure that provides opportunities for students to learn about foreign culture while using other skills-reading, listening, writing and speaking. In addition, resources from the Internet, such as Gopher, World Wide Web, and Listservs have great potential for cultural learning out-side the classroom. Foreign language teachers should be encouraged to explore and experiment with portfolios in other content areas …

Examining Student Perceptions Of The Transitional Services School Counselors Provide To College-Bound Individuals With And Without Learning Disabilities In The Areas Of Self-Awareness, Self-Advocacy, And The Law, Gillian Elisa Wells
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
College-bound students with and without learning disabilities were surveyed, to examine their perceptions of the transitional services provided by school counselors in the areas of self-awareness, self-advocacy, and the law. It appears that both groups are receiving some transitional services. Self-Awareness, self-advocacy, and the law are three components that are not covered by school counselors who work with students. In a majority of cases students cite family and other professionals as the only assistance they receive in these areas.

A Critical Analysis Of Barriers That Inhibit Latino Parent Involvement As Students Make The Transition From Esl To Mainstream Classrooms, Linda R Skroback-Heisler
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to explore the perspectives of Latino families concerning parent involvement roles while their children made the transition from ESL to mainstream classrooms. Three families were interviewed individually at eight week intervals for ten months. Using critical theory as a framework, data sources established three themes of status quo describing parents' knowledge and beliefs during prior experiences, ESL class, and during the year their fourth grade children were mainstreamed. Initially coded by constant comparative methods, a second and critical analysis of data uncovered the fourth theme: barriers encountered by Latino parents during the mainstream year. …
College Students' Image Of Nursing As A Career Choice, Diana Teresa Mendez
College Students' Image Of Nursing As A Career Choice, Diana Teresa Mendez
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
This thesis is a study of the image of nursing among college students. It has been inferred that the poor image of nursing negatively impacts on recruitment into the profession. A convenience survey of two groups of college students was instituted to determine the image of nursing in relation to an ideal career, and to discover if there are factors which make the choice of nursing as a career more likely. The responses of a group of 163 nonnursing students were compared to the responses of a group of 93 nursing students; This survey indicated that the image of nursing …

The three volumes which make up this study describe in detail how a number of teachers in different school situations in different parts of Australia undertook the assessment of young children's development of English as a second language. Most of the teachers worked in pre-primary to Year 3 classrooms where the majority of the children were aged between five and eight years. The majority worked in a mainstream context in which the number of children speaking English as a second language (ESL) varied from more than half the class to two or three students. About a third of the teachers …
