Aboriginal Students And The Western Australian Literacy And Numeracy Assessment, Sean Gorman
Aboriginal Students And The Western Australian Literacy And Numeracy Assessment, Sean Gorman
Research outputs pre 2011
Since the introduction of standardised testing in Western Australia with the Western Australian Literacy and Numeracy Assessment (WALNA) it has become quite evident that Indigenous students' performance is well below that of non-Indigenous students.
As WALNA is now very much a part of the pedagogical landscape steps must be taken to ensure that those students who are not reaching the benchmark scores or the MSE requirements do progress...

Ariadne's Thread: Leading Students Into And Out Of The Labyrinth Of The Rule Against Perpetuities , Maureen E. Markey
Ariadne's Thread: Leading Students Into And Out Of The Labyrinth Of The Rule Against Perpetuities , Maureen E. Markey
Cleveland State Law Review
This Article focuses partly on my own approach to teaching the Rule Against Perpetuities, but it addresses the approaches of others based on the survey responses. Although I have developed a method that works fairly well for my classes, I am always open to suggestions from others for modifying and improving that approach. Of course, a single method, no matter how good it appears to be, will not work for everyone. Therefore, I have incorporated a number of approaches into this Article so that those wanting to develop or improve their teaching of the Rule can pick and choose among …

Designing A Microcontroller Training Platform For Active Distance Learning Engineering And Technology Students, Steve C. Hsiung, James E. Eiland, John R. Hackworth, John Ritz
Engineering Technology Faculty Publications
This is an active distance-learning project that addresses the hands-on microprocessor/ mi-crocontroller-related courses. A research team designed a low-cost training system with supporting instructional materials to assist the teaching of these concepts. Individual laboratory activities are being developed to reinforce student learning and skill development in programming concepts. This basic system format eventually will support an array of engineering and technology courses. This project involves two community colleges, Blue Ridge Community College (BRCC) and Olympic College (OC), and a four-year university, Old Dominion University (ODU), in a collaborative research team to design and develop a specific PIC microcontroller training system …

We examined the educational involvement of English speaking and Spanish speaking parents of students in a Dual Language Program. Parents responded to open-ended questions about how they were involved, what they would like to be involved in but were not, and what barriers prevented them from being more involved. Monitoring/assisting with homework was the most frequently mentioned involvement activity fir both groups, followed by reading with their children, school involvement and communication, and providing social and emotional support to their children. The top areas in which parents wanted to do more were school involvement and communication, social and emotional support, …
Educators' Perceptions Of Mobile Students And The Interventions That Assist Them, Timothy Bruce Bostic, Mary Angela Coleman
Educators' Perceptions Of Mobile Students And The Interventions That Assist Them, Timothy Bruce Bostic, Mary Angela Coleman
MERC Publications
In the educational climate of no Child Left Behind (NCLB), school personnel are searching for any means available to help all children succeed academically and meet state standards. School teachers and administrators in Virginia are no different. All schools and school districts, in Virginia and across the country, must demonstrate through adequate yearly progress (AYP) that children are achieving state standards of education. AYP requires that schools no only show that all students are achieving state standards but also that disaggregated groups of students (e.g. black students, speakers of English as a second language, special education students) are meeting standards …
Out Of Sync: How Japanese International Students And American Students Misread Each Other, Jennifer Sousa
Out Of Sync: How Japanese International Students And American Students Misread Each Other, Jennifer Sousa
Pell Scholars and Senior Theses
The effects of cultural values and perceptions of cultural values on social support and acculturative stress are examined in this study. Japanese international students and American students completed several instruments to facilitate both the comparison and perception of each other’s cultural values and whether the accuracy of Japanese students’ perception of American students’ values was related to self-reported stress in the Japanese students. There were 11 Japanese international students and 46 American students from Salve Regina University participating in the study. Somewhat surprisingly, Japanese and American participants were shown to have similar individualist cultural values, and the American participants scored …

Background - Previous studies have shown that choice and self-initiated behavior changes are important for increasing intrinsic motivation and physical activity (PA), however, little of this research has focused on underserved adolescents.
Purpose - This study examined the effects of a 4-week student-centered intervention on increasing PA in underserved adolescents.
Methods - Twenty-eight students in the intervention school were matched (on race, percentage on free or reduced-price lunch program, gender, and age) with 20 students from another school who served as the comparison group (30 girls, 18 boys; ages 10-12 years; 83% African American; 83% on free or reduced-price lunch). …

For Whom The School Bell Tolls But Not The Statute Of Limitations: Minors And The Individuals With Disabilities Education Act, Lynn M. Daggett, Perry A. Zirkel, Leeann L. Gurysh
University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform
This Article explores whether claims under the federal special education statute should be tolled on account of minority. Adult disabled students typically assert this type of tolling claim when alleging statutory violations dating back ten or more years, when they were minors. However this tolling claim is decided, there may be undesired results. First, even if the student has a very strong case, the merits are never reached if the court dismisses the hearing request as untimely. Second, if the hearing request is timely and the case proceeds to the merits, the student must remain in her current educational placement, …

Collaborative Experimentation And Simulation: A Pathway To Improving Student Conceptualization Of The Essentials Of System Dynamics And Control Theory, Javier A. Kypuros, Thomas J. Connolly
Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
The overarching goal of this research is to improve conceptualization of System Dynamics and Controls concepts by incorporating a Web-facilitated curriculum to enable intercampus collaboration and remotely-accessible or virtual systems. This approach will complement lecture-based curricula and will strongly enhance students’ conceptualization and exposure to System Dynamics and Controls fundamentals by providing less restricted exposure to a variety of systems that encompass the more important Dynamic Systems concepts. The plan involves the development of a System Dynamics Concepts Inventory and the implementation and assessment of three Web-enabled laboratory formats: (1) inter-campus collaborative experimentation, (2) remotely-accessible experiments, and (3) virtual system …
Increasing Student Commitment To Class Preparation, Susan L. Murray
Increasing Student Commitment To Class Preparation, Susan L. Murray
Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Most of us know the rule-of-thumb that students should spend a certain number of hours outside of class studying for every hour in class. Unfortunately, students often develop the view that it is more efficient to come to class and have the instructor cover the material and then only study material that was emphasized or unclear. As faculty members this results in the dilemma of either assuming the students are not prepared and lecturing over basic material or trying to require the students to prepare. Some use readiness quizzes covering the required readings. Some try to intimidate, calling on students …

Interest among students for post-secondary STEM education and causes behind the declining enrollment rate was analyzed. A K-12 survey was developed at the University of Cincinnati to gather information directly from students to verify the teachers' statements regarding K-12 students' perceptions of the engineering profession and studying engineering in college. The K-12 student survey respondents indicated that about 28% of the 6-12 graders were interested in engineering. The survey also showed that students wanted to be an engineer because it was a stable living.

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Penn State University has hosted an NSF-sponsored GK-12 Outreach project for the past five years, and has just begun the second phase of the project. The Penn State project utilizes the talents of many science and engineering graduate students as teachers, mentors and role models for the K-12 classrooms. The project focuses on developing skills of students in the areas of science, technology, engineering and mathematics through the use of Advanced Transportation Technologies. A new project component was devised and implemented-the interaction of K-12 students with college freshman via a website project. The college freshmen were asked to create a …
