Writing As Survival: Uncovering How Students Understand Antiracist Writing Assessment Practices In The Community College Composition Classroom, Jason Torres-Rangel
Writing As Survival: Uncovering How Students Understand Antiracist Writing Assessment Practices In The Community College Composition Classroom, Jason Torres-Rangel
CGU Theses & Dissertations
The theory and practice of antiracist writing assessment ecologies (Inoue and Poe, 2020) emerged as a way to address and counteract the white, middle-class language norms that have dominated ethnically and linguistically diverse writing classrooms since at least the 1960s. Though social-justice and equity-focused teaching practices have emerged to empower ethnically and linguistically diverse students, writing studies scholars have observed the notion of Standard English or “academic language” still persists and privileges white, middle-class ways of languaging (Greenfield, 2011; Elbow, 2012; Inoue, 2014; Baker-Bell, 2020). At best, students of ethnically and linguistically diverse backgrounds learn they must code-switch for writing …

Death And Dying Across The Lifespan, Paige Sala
Entry Level Occupational Therapy Doctoral Capstone Projects Class of 2025
Death and Dying Across The Lifespan centers on the creation of three interdisciplinary educational courses focused on end-of-life care for three distinct age groups: geriatrics, adults, and pediatrics. The courses aim to improve undergraduate students’ competence in addressing death and dying with patients, caregivers, and other healthcare professionals within the team. The courses were developed in response to growing evidence that supports the need for education on death, dying, and caring for individuals at the end of life. Many students are not adequately exposed to these topics in current curricula, despite the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration in this area of …

Full Ride To College, But At What Cost?: Colonial Subjects At Imperial Educational Institutions In Binti And The Fifth Season, Martha Zornow
English Faculty Publications
A marginalized young person, often of a different physiognomy from those wielding power, sees the 'ivory tower' in her universe as a path to the learning, respect, power, and agency not available to her in her home environs. At their educational institutions, while their Blackness is not the basis for their outsider status, the Othering they experience mirrors that experienced by Black students at predominantly white universities in the real world. Theorizing the Colonial Role of Educational Institutions Following Thomas Macaulay's notorious' Minute on Education'(1835), educational systems have played a vital role in reaffirming the balance of power between the …

A Study Of Math 1 Students At Two Eastern High Schools In North Carolina, Employing An Explanatory Design, Anthony Mark Tracey
Doctor of Education Dissertations
This study examined the instructional experiences of Math 1 students in the Green Valley (pseudonym) County School District during the 2022-2023 academic year. Using an explanatory sequential mixed methods approach grounded in constructivism (Bruner, 1960; Vygotsky, 1978), behaviorism (Skinner, 1938), universal design for learning (CAST, 2021; Meyer et al., 2014), multiple intelligences (Gardner, 1983), and Piaget's (1954) stages of development, this study explored how students' lived instructional experiences impact academic outcomes. Data, analyzed descriptively and thematically in Qualtrics, revealed a widespread dissatisfaction among students regarding engagement, instructional pace, preparation, and classroom disruptions. Qualitative insights particularly underscore issues with a passive, …

Public Policy and Public Affairs Faculty Publication Series
Academic programs in colleges and universities in the United States have increasingly embraced principles of equity and inclusion to support student success and diversity within professions. Innovations in diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in university programs require baseline data on students, faculty and administrators, curricula, and programmatic support. A review of data shows that underrepresented groups in the US workforce have limited visibility in operations research and analytics. A review of DEI-related research reveals some relevant insights including a gap in studies specific to operations research and analytics.
To provide evidence in support of DEI initiatives in OR/analytics, we describe …

SPARK Symposium Presentations
The Headspace Implementation Project at Belmont University aims to address the high levels of stress and burnout among nursing students by integrating mindfulness practices into the curriculum. Research indicates that unmanaged stress negatively impacts academic performance and clinical outcomes, with nearly 30% of students reporting stress-related academic interference. By incorporating Headspace into nursing education, students will develop essential stress management skills before entering the workforce, ultimately improving their well-being and patient care quality.
The project follows the SBAR framework, identifying stress as a major barrier to nursing success and proposing Headspace as an evidence-based intervention. Implementation includes faculty involvement, incentives …
An Exploration Of The Clinical Senior Nursing Student Preceptor Relationship, Kimberly Nicole Dunker
An Exploration Of The Clinical Senior Nursing Student Preceptor Relationship, Kimberly Nicole Dunker
Dissertations
Problem
The use of clinical preceptors for training is well documented in the literature as an effective strategy for helping students, new graduates, and RNs orient to their roles in healthcare facilities. The need to ensure that the preceptor is adequately trained and then matched to a preceptee for a successful relationship is a challenge. The healthcare facility does its best to identify a preceptor and ensure adequate training is completed and there is a willingness to facilitate the experience. The academic institution is required to ensure that preceptors are chosen based on criteria outlined by the board of nursing …
