Big iDeas 2011 Proposals
In order to abate the anxiety and frustration surrounding visits to healthcare facilities, we propose the creation of a set of pictorial pharmacy flashcards, which will be given to Burmese patients in tandem with a diagnosis. The flashcards will indicate not only which medicine to purchase from the pharmacy, but also directions for use, absent words.

Big iDeas 2011 Proposals
Health literacy is a major issue in American health. Health literacy pertains to how patients obtain, understand, and use health information, as well as how medical professionals communicate medical information to their patients and the public. The economic costs of health literacy are conservatively estimated at over $70 billion annually in the United States. With recent alterations to the JCAHO standards, as well as pressure from new medical reimbursement legislation, the economics of health communication are only increasing in importance. More importantly though, is the human impact health literacy issues have on Americans. One in seven Americans struggle t read …

Big iDeas 2011 Proposals
Immigration is at the heart of a much heated debate as current legislation stands. There is no simple black and white solution, and it is not the intent of the Boxed In Team to endorse one view over another. The goal is to bring attention to and promote discussion about a growing concern within the education system. Through the immigration debate the position of undocumented college students has been uncovered. Texas houses the second largest population of undocumented students in the United States, second only to California.
A Quantitative Study Into Grade Inflation (Perceived And Actual) In The College Of Business, Technologicl University Dublin, Derek Simon
Theses
Most academics have an opinion on the existence or otherwise of grade inflation. Some people deny the existence of grade inflation. Some argue that it is damaging to academia while some argue that it is a normal phenomenon and is not damaging while others assert that it is impossible to measure. Due to the difficulty in measurement of grade inflation this study was devised to measure firsts and distinctions to ascertain the quantity of grade inflation. This study takes a two pronged approach to discovering the real and perceived existence or otherwise of grade inflation in the College. In the …
The Development Of Conceptual Socialization In Turkish International Students : A Language Socialization Perspective On Conceptual Fluency And Social Identity, Deniz Ortactepe
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
This longitudinal, mixed-method study relied on the assumption that international students as newcomers to the American culture experience conceptual socialization which enables them to gain competency in the target language through exposure to the target language culture. By collecting qualitative and quantitative data three times over a year, the present study examined the linguistic and social development of Turkish international students as a result of their conceptual socialization in the U.S. The stories of participating Turkish students provided evidence for the multi-faceted nature of identity (re)construction which required a closer look at not only the participants' investment, audibility and symbolic …

The Role Of Esl Teacher Support In Facilitating School Adjustment In English Language Learners, Mary Sharp-Ross
PCOM Psychology Dissertations
Immigrant students are the fastest growing sector of the US school population. These students are English Language Learners (ELLs) who enter our schools with a constellation of social-emotional risk factors that predispose them to psychological disorders, as well as undermine their learning and educational outcomes. English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESL) teacher support is indicated to be a primary protective factor for ELLs facing the pervasive task of acculturation to a new society and school culture. This study surveyed 200 ESL teachers in Pennsylvania in order to gather information regarding their beliefs about the social-emotional and acculturation needs of their …

Building A Participatory Culture: Collaborating With Student Organizations For Twenty-First Century Library Instruction, Margeaux Johnson, Melissa J. Clapp, Stacey R. Ewing, Amy G. Buhler
Collaborative Librarianship
Today’s students are critical thinkers, collaborators, and creators. They expect to participate in twenty-first century learning environments not as passive information consumers (think lectures), but as active contributors (think team-based problem-solving). There are opportunities for instruction librarians to collaborate directly with student-led organizations. These partnerships have the potential to increase attendance at library events and provide platforms for students to engage in richer forms of exploratory learning that incorporate twenty-first century skills. This article will discuss the literature surrounding library instruction collaborations, identify “Librarian–Student Organization Collaborations” as an important form of partnership, and supply specific case studies of successful library …

Communication Strategies In Social Interaction Between Arab And Iranian Postgraduate Students., Elham Shahban

Arab and Iranian students must communicate in English in Malaysia but due to their lack of proficiency they tend to use communication strategies (CS) to overcome problems they encounter while communicating in English. According to Corder (1977) CSs are systematic techniques employed by speakers to facilitate communication during conversations. The aim of this study is to investigate the type and frequency of the CSs high and low proficiency Arab and Iranian postgraduate students with differing linguistic background (Arabic and Persian) use when speaking in English with each other. Transnational Students' Perspectives On Schooling In The United States And Mexico: The Salience Of School Experience And Country Of Birth, Edmund T. Hamann, Víctor Zúñiga, Juan Sánchez García
Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications
Students in Mexican schools with previous experience in US schools are transnational students. To the extent their Mexican schooling does not recognize or build on their US life and school experience and their American school experience did not anticipate their later relocation to Mexico, these students are incompletely attended to by school. Yet these students, like all students, are agentive and have some control over how they make sense of their schooling.
As schooling becomes an increasingly common institutional presence across the world and as decided majorities of children now attend at least some version of primary school, it is …

Re-Centering Students’ Attitudes About Writing: A Qualitative Study Of The Effects Of A High School Writing Center, Katherine Palacio
Department of Writing and Communication Theses
While attitudes are difficult to assess, a qualitative research study can produce results to give insight into how a student feels a writing center has improved his or her confidence and attitude towards writing. This study reviews the minimal discussion of students‟ attitudes towards writing in past and current writing center research and builds upon the conversation by following three students‟ journeys in the writing center and discussing whether their experiences with the tutors has improved their attitudes about writing.

Interview With Cheryl Johnson-Odim, Carrie Armbruster
Chicago Anti-Apartheid Movement
Length: 57 minutes
Oral history interview of Cheryl Johnson-Odim by Carrie Armbruster
Johnson-Odim describes her introduction to South African Apartheid in junior high school through her music teacher, S. Carol Buchanan, who was good friends with the musical director for Harry Belafonte. After auditioning and being chosen to sing on his album, “The Streets I’ve Walked,” Belafonte took Johnson and the other singers to watch South African Boot Dancers, who later went to teach the students about the apartheid regime in South Africa. She describes how her involvement in the civil rights of African Americans and the rights of women …

The Experiences Of Smith College School For Social Work Students Talking With Field Supervisors About Issues Of Race, Julia Kraft Perault
The Experiences Of Smith College School For Social Work Students Talking With Field Supervisors About Issues Of Race, Julia Kraft Perault
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This mixed method survey study explored Smith College School for Social Work (SCSSW) students' experiences in talking with field supervisors about issues of race. Increased racial and ethnic diversity in the United States calls for attention to issues of race in social work education and practice. The SCSSW shares with major social work organizations its commitment to anti-racism. Field supervision is an integral component of the SCSSW social work curriculum and represents an arena in which students can incorporate anti-racism learning into practice. A dearth of social work conceptual and empirical literature examines racial dialogues in field supervision from the …
