Communication Post-Covid: Overcoming Silos To Improve Workplace Collaboration And Well-Being, Rachel Bentley, Crystal O'Dell, Amy Richardson
Creating Healthy Work Environments (CHWE)
With COVID-19, public health measures were adopted to prevent transmission in the workplace. As a consequence, the work environment changed with video conferencing utilized not as a novelty, but a necessity. The use of video conferencing is now routine, with 300 million daily meeting participants and ‘zoom fatigue’ a reality. Workplace culture shifted to virtual communication; however, little is known regarding the psychological impact, limiting personal engagement and collaboration and altering work relationships due to its silo effect.
The World Health Organization (WHO) provides a healthy workplace framework to protect and promote the well-being of workers by considering concerns of …

Supporting The Well-Being Of Critical Care Nurses At A System-Level, Heidi K. Holtz, Guy Weissinger, Lindsay Tessmer
Creating Healthy Work Environments (CHWE)
Critical care nurses (CCNs) are a crucial part of the health care system, however, the long-term stressors and traumatic stress they are exposed to affect their health, well-being, and create work environments that make it difficult to provide safe and quality patient care. A healthy work environment for nurses will maximize the health and well-being of nurses, decrease burnout, lower turnover, and improve the quality of patient care[1]. There is limited evidence from previous studies carried out that can inform the selection of interventions to foster healthy work environments for nurses and manage traumatic stress[2,3].Therefore, indicating a critical need to …
Emotional Armor: An Exploration Of Emotion Regulation On Race-Related Stress And Well-Being, Jibri Khalia Parker
Emotional Armor: An Exploration Of Emotion Regulation On Race-Related Stress And Well-Being, Jibri Khalia Parker
Doctoral Dissertations
Scholars have examined at length the impact of stress on well-being. However, people of color experience an additional stressor called racism. Increased experiences with chronic discrimination and racism have been associated with increased hypertension, heart disease, anxiety and depression to name a few (Williams, 2018). Chronic experiences with racism leads to a phenomenon called race-related stress (Utsey & Ponterotto, 1996). The research has shown the impact of race-related stress on physical and mental health outcomes, particularly on individuals from an ethnic background (Williams, 2018). However, not much research has focused on potential moderators in this relationship. This study poses emotion …

Enhancing Resilience In Nursing Education Through The Lens Of Gratitude, Sarah B. Hathcock, Deanna B. Hiott, Carol K. Archuleta
Creating Healthy Work Environments (CHWE)
Resilience has consistently been identified as a hallmark characteristic among individuals who invest themselves in the workplace, while also finding meaningfulness and happiness in their work (Keener et al., 2021). Moreover, resilience is a protective health factor essential to an individual’s ability to negate the harmful effects of stress; it is a construct linked to improved mental and physical health (Asensio-Martínez et al., 2019). Nursing faculty, like all nurses, have the personal responsibility to ensure they are employing practices to foster and maintain their personal well-being, while also contributing to a healthy work environment. The Three Good Things gratitude practice …

Faculty and Staff Publications & Presentations
Research suggests a moderate incidence of depression, anxiety, and especially stress among college students (Ramon-Arbues et al., 2020). It is reasonable to believe that these mental health outcomes might be inversely correlated with resilience, the ability to adapt to new challenges. In this study, we hypothesize an inverse correlation between resilience stress, anxiety, and depression. In other words, college students who feel resilient will experience greater mental health and wellness. Building on previous research that suggests these effects in women only (Ahmed & Julius, 2015), gender differences will be examined. Few studies have attempted to see whether these correlations are …

Sex, Stress And Hormones : The Role Of Modifiable Risk Factors In The Kinetics Of Alzheimer’S Disease, Hannah Marie Edwards
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disease hallmarked by the presence of amyloid- plaques and tau tangles in the brain. The process of the disease begins decades prior to the onset of symptoms and is thought to be driven first by a buildup of amyloid- peptide in the extracellular space, triggering a cascade of pathology and symptomology culminating in loss of cerebral volume and cognitive impairment. Women are diagnosed with AD at a rate 2/3 higher than their male counterparts, even when controlling for age. While most driving factors of the disease are thought to be genetic, roughly 40% of …

Students in secondary and post-secondary classrooms are openly exposed to stressors that can be considered impactful in their day-to-day lives. These stressors can be categorized as either “positive,” which serve as motivators, or “negative,” which often cause anxiety. In order to understand the stressors that students experience, students in a rural teacher education program at Northern Michigan University were asked to respond anonymously to a survey asking about stressors at the secondary and post-secondary levels. The survey was given to students enrolled in the Winter & Fall semesters of 2023, and the Winter semester of 2024. Students identified stressors from their …
Emotional Safety In Pediatrics: The Impact Of Child Life Services On Healthcare Professionals’ Perceptions Of Their Own, Patients’, And Families’ Outpatient Experiences, Jenni Davis
All Dissertations
Medical visits, regardless of setting, are stressful for children and their families. Care that focuses on the emotional safety of children and families can help reduce this stress. However, not all staff feel prepared to provide emotionally safe care. Child life specialists (CLSs) are specifically trained to support emotional needs during healthcare encounters. Their presence may help staff stress as well, not just stress for children and families.
This study used three surveys to understand stress among healthcare staff working in pediatric outpatient clinics and surgery settings, and how support from a CLS affects staff, children, and families. All staff …

Be Mindful: Examining A Brief Mindfulness Intervention On Educator Well-Being, Oceann S. Gittens
Be Mindful: Examining A Brief Mindfulness Intervention On Educator Well-Being, Oceann S. Gittens
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Teaching is currently rated as one of the topmost stressful occupations. Concerningly, chronic levels of stress can lead to poor mental and physical health, occupational burnout, and teacher attrition; all of which have a negative impact on student outcomes. Mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) are commonly used to combat occupational stress by enhancing educator well-being. There is compelling evidence to support these types of interventions with teachers. However, the length of many MBIs may make them prohibitive for the average educator to participate in them. The literature suggests that a briefer format may be just as effective at reducing stress, but more …
