The Effect Of Time And Stress On The Heart Rate-Oxygen Consumption Relationship Of Uinta Ground Squirrels, Thomas E. Oldfield May 1975

The Effect Of Time And Stress On The Heart Rate-Oxygen Consumption Relationship Of Uinta Ground Squirrels, Thomas E. Oldfield

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Uinta ground squirrels (Spermophilus armatus) were instrumented with ECG radio-transmitters. Heart rate and oxygen consumption were monitored for one hour at ambient temperatures above, within and below the thermoneutral zone. These measures were made at predetermined intervals throughout the active season of squirrels to determine if the heart rate-oxygen consumption relationship was a stable linear regression within and between squirrels during this period. Heart rate and oxygen consumption were also monitored for squirrels exposed to artificial and natural stressors. These squirrels were then released in an outdoor enclosure. Heart rate and behavior of animals were monitored simultaneously during …

Anxiety, Defense And Cognition: A Theoretical Basis For Practical Handling Of The Surgical Patient, Stanley L. Block Jan 1969

Anxiety, Defense And Cognition: A Theoretical Basis For Practical Handling Of The Surgical Patient, Stanley L. Block

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

Both the anxiety-defense model and the cognitive model provide a scientific basis for practical handling of the surgical patient. Emerging from both models is a humanistic approach to the patient based on understanding and a nonjudgmental attitude as well as on a knowledge of where the patient is psychologically and a willingness to meet him on his ground. The rewards in terms of a reduction of anxiety, depression, and human suffering can be enormous.

Psychosomatic Disease And The Law, Carl E. Wasmuth Jan 1958

Psychosomatic Disease And The Law, Carl E. Wasmuth

Cleveland State Law Review

There are fundamental differences between the standard of probabilities in law upon which a jury must deliberate, andthe standard of certainty in the scientific laboratory of medicine which an investigator must respect. This conflict is nowhere more evident than in the field of psychosomatic disease. This area of medicine has long been recognized but it was only in recent years that it has become the target for intense research. This lack of medical interest in what was considered a fringe area has caused the legal profession to substitute law for medicine. Eventually, however, science will progress in the field of …

Medical Evaluation Of Mental Pain And Suffering, Carl E. Wasmuth Jan 1957

Medical Evaluation Of Mental Pain And Suffering, Carl E. Wasmuth

Cleveland State Law Review

What the attorney calls "mental pain and suffering" and emotional disturbance is identified by the physician as stress, a concept easier to appreciate than to define. The term was probably borrowed from the language of the engineer. Selye, the chief proponent of the term in medicine, employs it to describe the effects of external influences upon the human mind and body. The lawyer seeking damages for his client on the basis of mental and emotional disturbances (mental "pain and suffering") finds proof difficult. Until the sciences supply an accurate measure of mental and emotional disturbances due to stress, the legal …

Premenstrual Tension In Automobile Accidents, Naoma Lee Stewart Jan 1957

Premenstrual Tension In Automobile Accidents, Naoma Lee Stewart

Cleveland State Law Review

The scope of possible legal problems involved in the existence of this physical and mental dysfunction caused by premenstrual is very wide. For the sake of brevity the writer would like to separate the discussions of criminal and civil responsibility, and make this initial study one which is specifically limited to the civil rights and liabilities of women involved in automobile accidents. It is emphasized that the effects of premenstrual tension in torts are not as clearly pertinent as they are in crimes. But they are pertinent.

Analysis Of Stresses In A Three Span Continuous Concrete Beam Bridge, G K. Leptien Jan 1949

Analysis Of Stresses In A Three Span Continuous Concrete Beam Bridge, G K. Leptien

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

While still attempting to decide on a topic for a thesis study, the author was asked, "How far from the up- ports of a continuous-bean reinforced-concrete bridge should the reinforcing for negative moment extend into the spany." It was a simple question, and the reason for it being asked was that a particular structure, the one shown in the frontispiece, had developed transverse cracks in the surface of the deck structure a distance of three and a half feet from the center of both interior supports. (See the plan view in figure 6, Appendix.) The cracks were by no means …
