Antitrust Changeup: How A Single Antitrust Reform Could Be A Home Run For Minor League Baseball Players, Jeremy Ulm
Antitrust Changeup: How A Single Antitrust Reform Could Be A Home Run For Minor League Baseball Players, Jeremy Ulm
Dickinson Law Review (2017-Present)
In 1890, Congress passed the Sherman Antitrust Act to protect competition in the marketplace. Federal antitrust law has developed to prevent businesses from exerting unfair power on their employees and customers. Specifically, the Sherman Act prevents competitors from reaching unreasonable agreements amongst themselves and from monopolizing markets. However, not all industries have these protections.
Historically, federal antitrust law has not governed the “Business of Baseball.” The Supreme Court had the opportunity to apply antitrust law to baseball in Federal Baseball Club, Incorporated v. National League of Professional Baseball Clubs; however, the Court held that the Business of Baseball was not …
Peak Lower Extremity Net Joint Moments And Joint Angles During Isometric Mid-Thigh Pulls Vary With Bar Position, Nayun Ahn, Hoon Kim, Kristof Kipp
Peak Lower Extremity Net Joint Moments And Joint Angles During Isometric Mid-Thigh Pulls Vary With Bar Position, Nayun Ahn, Hoon Kim, Kristof Kipp
ISBS Proceedings Archive
The purpose of this study was to identify the effect of bar position on the ankle, knee, and hip peak net joint moments (NJM) and associated joint angles during isometric mid-thigh pulls (IMTP). Seven female college lacrosse players performed maximal IMTP at three different bar positions (low: above patella, mid: mid-thigh, high: crease of hip) while motion capture and GRF data were recorded. Inverse dynamics was used to calculate peak ankle, knee, and hip NJM. Joint angles at peak NJM were also extracted. Main effects for bar position existed for hip NJM and hip and knee joint angles. Pair-wise comparisons …
Hosting The Fifa World Cup: An Economic Analysis Of How The World Cup Has Impacted The Economy Of A Developed And A Developing Nation, Juan Borga
Undergraduate Theses and Capstone Projects
This thesis is a microeconomic study of the economic impact hosting the FIFA World Cup can have on both a developed and developing nation. I will examine the economies of Germany and Brazil, three years prior and three years after hosting the tournament in 2006 and 2014 respectively. The pressures imposed by the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) require significant monetary investments for the World Cup to be considered successful, but have countries been allocating their resources effectively? The purpose of this thesis is to determine the extent to which it is economically advantageous for a nation to host …

The Perpetuation Of Nineteenth Century Amateurism As A British Virtue In Modern Olympic Track & Field, Katrina Marie Smith
The Perpetuation Of Nineteenth Century Amateurism As A British Virtue In Modern Olympic Track & Field, Katrina Marie Smith
CGU Theses & Dissertations
This thesis explored the financial plight of modern track and field from a historical perspective. Historically, track and field was governed by organizations originally founded on the concept of amateurism. These organizations included the International Olympic Committee, the International Amateur Athletic Federation (now called World Athletics), the Amateur Athletic Union, Amateur Athletic Association, and amateur athletic clubs of Britain. From the mid-nineteenth century to the 1970s, amateurism dominated track and field worldwide beginning in Britain. In order to understand the financial structure of track and field historically, this thesis endeavored to examine amateurism as a British virtue.
Revisiting The Beneficiaries Of The Scotus Ruling Striking Down Paspa, Sam Fullerton, Ronald Dick, Michael Mccall
Revisiting The Beneficiaries Of The Scotus Ruling Striking Down Paspa, Sam Fullerton, Ronald Dick, Michael Mccall
AMTP Proceedings 2020
A Supreme Court ruling in 2018 essentially rendered restrictions on sports gambling to run counter to states’ rights, thus in conflict with the Constitution of the United States. As a consequence, 13 states and the District of Columbia now have legalized sports gambling. Initial research into the consequences of this ruling identified 12 potential beneficiaries. Subsequent research entailing an assessment of new literature and a survey of executive opinion involving a number of marketing executives who work within the field of sports marketing expanded the findings from the earlier study. This extension of the preliminary study found 14 beneficiaries rather …

Back To Beijing: The Future Of The Olympic Games, Jennifer Maynard
Back To Beijing: The Future Of The Olympic Games, Jennifer Maynard
Marriott Student Review
Just four years ago, the IOC made an unprecedented decision to award Beijing with the 2022 Winter Olympic Games bid, making China the first Asian country ever to host both the Summer and Winter Games. What’s more, prior to this second visit to China, the Olympics will have been held in Pyeongchang (2018) and Tokyo (2020). At the same time that this national superpower has the opportunity to capitalize once again on the all eyes-on-China phenomenon, the IOC has the chance to truly go global.

The Value Of A Sports Franchise: The Influence Of Coaches, Fans, And Players, Montgomery Gray
Sacred Heart University Scholar
This article examines existing data to consider the factors that go into the valuation of a sports franchise. Rather than assuming a narrow monetary calculation, I argue for a broader perspective that includes the often incalculable influence of coaches, fans, and players.

Child Sport Fan Behavior: An Examination Of The Effects Of Socialization, Branding, And Alternatives On Children’S Psychological Connections To Sports Teams, Katherine Rose Nakamoto Reifurth
Theses and Dissertations
This three-study dissertation focuses on child fans of professional sport teams and the ways in which they become fans and attach themselves and connect to these sport brands. In Study 1, the researchers focused on the socialization into fandom of young children and the effects of communities and the game-day environment on this socialization utilizing qualitative observations and interviews with children ages 6 to 14 and resulted in an expanded understanding of the dame-day aspects that attract and excite children most. In Study 2, the researchers focused on the aspects of a new team’s brand that children ages 5 to …

The Value Of Sports Teams: The Influence Of Coaches, Fans, And Players On Value, Montgomery Gray
The Value Of Sports Teams: The Influence Of Coaches, Fans, And Players On Value, Montgomery Gray
Writing Across the Curriculum
In this paper, I argue that the true value of a team comes from the coaches, fans, and players. These are the people who influence the monetary and competitional success of a team, so are the ones who affect the value the most. Growing up, I have always been a part of a sports team and have cheered for multiple professional teams across numerous sports, but I have always questioned how a team should be valued. I have also always been in business, so I believed that the monetary value was a good source but have found that it goes …
Economic Impact Of Minor Sporting Events And Minor League Teams, Nola Agha, Marijke Taks
Economic Impact Of Minor Sporting Events And Minor League Teams, Nola Agha, Marijke Taks
Sport Management
Inquiry on minor sports has been overlooked in the economic literature despite a long history suggesting that minor events are likely more beneficial than major sports (e.g. Coates, 2012; Daniels & Norman, 2003; Marsh, 1984; Matheson, 2006; Walo, Bull, & Breen, 1996; Taks, 2013). In part due to both increased data availability and a shift towards cost-benefit analysis approaches, recent efforts to develop theory specific to minor events (e.g. Agha & Rascher, 2016; Agha & Taks, 2015) and to conduct studies on minor events (Taks et al., 2011) and teams (Agha, 2013) using more robust approaches occur in the literature. …

Using Virtual Reality To Train Athletes, Brian Christoffersen
Master of Arts in Sport Management
Training athletes is an ever-evolving part of sports that, with the growth of the use of technology in sports, has become increasingly complex. Organizations and teams are constantly looking for new ways to be at the forefront of training development. As the development of virtual reality has moved forward, so has the ability to adopt these new technologies to a wide variety of areas. There are multiple systems already in existence that use virtual reality to train athletes. This proposed study aims to shed light on this promising technology to help athletes learn more efficiently and effectively in a safe …

Athletic Administrators Report Of Emergency Action Plan Adoption In Secondary School Athletics: The Influence Of Athletic Training Services, Samantha E. Scarneo-Miller, Lindsay J. Distefano, Johna K. Register-Mihalik, Rebecca L. Stearns, Craig R. Denegar, Douglas J. Casa
Journal of Applied Sport Management
This study describes the emergency action plan (EAP) adoption in secondary school athletics reported by athletic administrators in the United States. Utilizing best-practice criteria, a questionnaire assessed athletic administrators’ knowledge and adoption of an EAP in their athletics program. A majority of athletic administrators reported having an EAP; however, the EAP often lacked the necessary components to be compliant with best-practice guidelines. Further, access to an athletic trainer was associated with increased EAP adoption and adopting a venue specific EAP. Athletic administrators should utilize these data to facilitate improved policy adoption and management of athletics programs.
Talkin' Black: African American English Usage In Professional African American Athletes, Kaela Fong
Talkin' Black: African American English Usage In Professional African American Athletes, Kaela Fong
Scripps Senior Theses
Sports play an important role in the culture of the United States as does language, so the choice to use non-Standard dialects in a nation that privileges the Standard and negatively judges dialectical differences, especially those spoken by mostly people of color, is not undertaken lightly. Because of this privileging of Standard American English, it is assumed that only professional African American athletes are allowed to keep their native dialect if it is African American English (AAE) and still be successful. However, this is complicated by the historical and present increased criticisms women face in both sport and language. To …
Instant Replay As A Tool For Correcting Human Error In College Basketball: A Historical Analysis, Matthew Hammond
Instant Replay As A Tool For Correcting Human Error In College Basketball: A Historical Analysis, Matthew Hammond
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
Sport has grown into one of the largest and most profitable businesses in the United States. With gambling now coming onto the scene more than ever before on top of player salaries in professional leagues and collegiate head coaches’ salaries sky-rocketing, there is more pressure than ever being put on officials to get things right and ensure the integrity of games. A tool utilized in most major competition at the professional and collegiate level is instant replay. Instant replay is something officials can use to analyze a previous ruling to determine if the right call was made or if something …
Managing The Business Of Soccer: A Conceptual Framework, Sten Söderman, James Santomier
Managing The Business Of Soccer: A Conceptual Framework, Sten Söderman, James Santomier
WCBT Faculty Publications
In recent years soccer (i.e., European football) has experienced rapid globalization, primarily due to increased integration of sponsorship agreements, foreign investment, private equity, digital media technologies and effective executive leadership. Manchester United, Liverpool, Paris Saint-Germain, and other high-level European soccer clubs are now owned or managed by investors, with the ostensible objective of generating ancillary benefits or significant profits. Historically, however, the ownership of unprofitable and often relegated soccer clubs was overwhelmingly in the hands of wealthy sport enthusiasts as sole proprietors. Given the recent and often dramatic changes in the business of soccer, the primary purpose of this chapter …
