The Air Jordan Rules: Image Advertising Adds New Dimension To Right Of Publicity–First Amendment Tension, Stephen Mckelvey, Jonathan Goins, Frederick Krauss

Fordham Intellectual Property, Media and Entertainment Law Journal

Every year, corporations spend on average nearly thirty-five billion dollars on sports-related marketing, ranging from stadium naming rights and promotional sponsorships, to commercials and endorsement deals. In mining through some of the potential legal traps, corporate advertisers understand that utilizing the name, image, or likeness of athletes or celebrities in marketing and promotional campaigns requires some form of consent and compensation. Corporations hire lawyers for “advertising clearance”: to ensure that slogans, logos, and images are available for use, and that video and music in audio-visual recordings are otherwise licensed. The concept of getting permission or authorization is relatively straight-forward. However, …

Three major categories of benefits also exist: the short-run benefits of tourist spending during the Games; the long-run benefits or the "Olympic legacy" which might include improvements in infrastructure and increased trade, foreign investment, or tourism after the Games; and intangible benefits …

This study is meant to look at what motivates fantasy sports participants, especially through this time of turmoil in the industry. It specifically looks at …

Many Happy Returns? The Pro-Bowl, Mega-Events, And Tourism In Hawaii, Robert Baumann, Victor Matheson

Economics Department Working Papers

We use daily airplane arrival data from 2004 to 2015 from Hawaii’s Department of Business, Economic Development, and Tourism to determine the net change in arrivals around a variety of sporting events. We find only one event generates a positive and significant net impact on arrivals: the Honolulu Marathon, which generates roughly 3,900 additional arrivals. No other sporting events result in a measurable increase in tourist arrivals including, notably, the NFL’s Pro Bowl, which receives a large subsidy from the state’s tourism authority.

Social Media In Sports: A Phenomenological Study Of Athletes And Online Communication, Garrett Bireline Apr 2014

Social Media In Sports: A Phenomenological Study Of Athletes And Online Communication, Garrett Bireline

Masters Theses

This study investigates the intersection where the shared experience of sports meets the shared experience of social media. Empirically quantitative literature and data regarding social media has been well-documented from the perspective of understanding macro-level trends (Duggan & Brenner, 2012; Lenhart, et al., 2010). However, few to no studies have sought to learn the views, feelings, and experiences of unique populations from the micro, individual level. This method of research threatens to silence the voice of the individuals of select populations, and offers no hope of their ever being heard. Specifically, this study seeks to understand how collegiate athletes at …

Law Faculty Publications

This Comment is the first in a series of publications on Brazil's efforts and, we hope, its successes in reducing corruption in the 2016 Olympic Games. It is written as part of a course at the University of Richmond School of Law entitled "Brazil, Corruption, and the 2016 Summer Olympics"-the co-authors are eight students and their pro- fessor. While the ultimate product will be a comprehensive analysis of the role of Brazilian law in controlling corruption, this Comment has a more modest purpose. It will discuss the various trends and forces that have converged on Brazil's hosting of the Games, …
