A New Look At An Old Temptation: Saint Vincent De Paul's Temptation Against Faith And Resolution To Serve The Poor, Stafford Poole C.M., Douglas Slawson C.M.
A New Look At An Old Temptation: Saint Vincent De Paul's Temptation Against Faith And Resolution To Serve The Poor, Stafford Poole C.M., Douglas Slawson C.M.
Vincentian Studies
According to Vincent de Paul’s first biographer, Louis Abelly, Vincent prayed to have a temptation against faith transferred to him to free a doctor of theology who was originally suffering from it. The temptation continued for three or four years until Vincent resolved to serve poor persons. While many biographers have accepted this story, its truth is doubtful for many reasons besides those that follow. Vincent never spoke of having this temptation himself. He never would have prayed for a transfer of temptation without advice from his spiritual director, and this advice would not have been given. The temptation would …
"Hearts Have A Secret Language":The Spiritual Language Of Francis De Sales And Jane De Chantal, Wendy M. Wright
"Hearts Have A Secret Language":The Spiritual Language Of Francis De Sales And Jane De Chantal, Wendy M. Wright
Vincentian Studies
Francis de Sales and Jane de Chantal’s spiritual friendship lasted from 1604 to 1622. They co-founded the community of the Visitation of Holy Mary, and their relationship “brought them both to the fullness of their human potential and closer to . . . the radical and self-giving love of God.” Both saw all forms of human love as the way to return to the source of love, God. Friendships were particularly important for creating devout souls, which would transform the world in to the image of the loving God. This article examines Francis and Jane’s relationship to see how this …
The Seventeenth-Century School Of French Spirituality, Raymond Deville S.S.
The Seventeenth-Century School Of French Spirituality, Raymond Deville S.S.
Vincentian Studies
The French school of spirituality, a controversial term, can include all the leaders of the Church’s renewal in seventeenth-century France or can be limited to Pierre de Berulle and his first followers. This article describes some of the school’s main figures (Berulle, Charles de Condren, Jean-Jacques Olier, and John Eudes), its characteristics, and representative texts. The school’s leaders were mystics who underwent profound spiritual evolutions. They adored God, focused on forming a relationship with Jesus, and were devoted to the Spirit and Mary. They saw the Church and moral actions as the continuation of Jesus’s work. Their missionary commitment was …
Saint Vincent And Saint Louise In Relation To The French School Of Spirituality, Raymond Deville S.S.
Saint Vincent And Saint Louise In Relation To The French School Of Spirituality, Raymond Deville S.S.
Vincentian Studies
Raymond Deville holds that Vincent de Paul and Louise de Marillac were of the French school of spirituality, but were not totally Berullian. The French school focused on domestic and foreign missions and was concerned with the renewal of parish life, the education of the poor, and the formation of priests. With regard to formation, the French school accepted only what would be called major seminarians today and stressed the necessity of having a vocation for the priesthood, ideas that were both unusual for the time. However, Vincent’s conception of Jesus was simpler and more practical than that of other …
