A Spirituality Of Christian Activism, Evangelical Advocacy: A Response To Global Poverty
A Spirituality Of Christian Activism, Evangelical Advocacy: A Response To Global Poverty
Syllabi
This course will explore the intersection of Christian spirituality and social engagement. Against the stereotype surrounding those whom church history has called “mystics” that they are disengaged from the world, this course examines both historical and contemporary movements of spirituality—that is, movements that can be considered monastic or mystical—that were very much engaged in activities of compassion, justice, and advocacy.
Counseling And Psychotherapy Within And Across Faith Traditions (Chapter 17 In The Oxford Handbook Of The Psychology Of Spirituality), Mark R. Mcminn
Counseling And Psychotherapy Within And Across Faith Traditions (Chapter 17 In The Oxford Handbook Of The Psychology Of Spirituality), Mark R. Mcminn
Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program
This chapter begins with general considerations for religiously and spiritually oriented psychotherapy, including the importance of seeing religion and spirituality as d.imensions of cultural diversity, considering clients' welfare and autonomy, and maintaining competence. Three types of religious and spiritual intervention approaches are then discussed: assimilative, accommodative, and collaborative. Assimilative approaches introduce spiritual interventions or considerations into a standard psychotherapy approach. Accommodative approaches involve adapting a standard psychotherapy regimen to include religious or spiritual matters. Collaborative approaches entail a mental health professional and religious leader working in tandem for the sake of clients' welfare. Next, specific issues related to counseling within …
Influences On Father Involvement: Testing For Unique Contributions Of Religion And Spirituality, Mark Lynn
Influences On Father Involvement: Testing For Unique Contributions Of Religion And Spirituality, Mark Lynn
Dissertations (1934 -)
The role of the father in children's development historically has been neglected. Studies examining family processes were primarily limited to mothers, under the assumption that mothers' influences encapsulated what (little) effects could also be attributed to the father. Although theory and research have begun to address fathers' roles in families in earnest, there is still much work to be done, particularly in regard to understanding the determinants of father involvement. One direction that has received attention from researchers is towards a conceptualization of environmental and contextual influences on fathers' interactions with their families. The goal of this study was to …
The Role Of Religion And Spirituality In Counseling, Tiffany Nickles
The Role Of Religion And Spirituality In Counseling, Tiffany Nickles
Psychology and Child Development
While the 20th century has simultaneously brought about a growth in counseling and a reemergence of secularism, counseling in the 21st century has focused its attention on interventions that are sensitive to multicultural facets in clients’ lives. As professionals increasingly embrace multicultural competency in counseling and therapy, religion and spirituality arguably stand out as cultural and personal factors that are a salient part of framing one’s experiences, beliefs, values, behavior, and illness patterns. Despite the growing understanding of the pervasiveness and importance of spirituality and religion, most psychologists have little training in dealing with religious and spiritual issues. …

The Religious Spirituality Of An Indiana Public School Leader And Its Influence On The School, Peters Timothy St.
The Religious Spirituality Of An Indiana Public School Leader And Its Influence On The School, Peters Timothy St.
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
As schools expand secularization and laws limiting religious expression increase, one must not forget the religious spirituality of the individual. Individual religious spirituality is still protected under the United States Constitution. Many researchers feel that this religious spirituality should be nurtured, not discouraged in public schools. Multiple studies seen in the literature review show that spiritual and religious commitment directly leads to increased academic success and decreased risk taking behaviors in students. The school leader has the ability to encourage, foster, and enrich religious spirituality in students while following established law regarding the separation of church and state. All along, …
Promoting Resiliency: Vicarious Posttraumatic Growth In Trauma Clinicians, Christopher Howard
Promoting Resiliency: Vicarious Posttraumatic Growth In Trauma Clinicians, Christopher Howard
Antioch University Dissertations & Theses
Vicarious Posttraumatic Growth (VPG) and Vicarious Traumatization (VT) are two potential outcomes of clinical work with trauma survivors. The aim of this study was to test a predictive model of these constructs, allowing a fuller understanding of preventive strategies clinicians might employ to inoculate themselves against the potential hazards of service provision and provide the highest quality of clinical care. VPG and VT were investigated in 63 self-identified trauma therapists. The results showed that VPG is facilitated by engagement in successful services subsequent to a traumatic event. Self-Care emerged as a poignant buffer against various indices of vicarious traumatization. Other …
Exploring Efforts On Two College Campuses To Cultivate A Culture Of Vocation, Mark Peters Phd
Exploring Efforts On Two College Campuses To Cultivate A Culture Of Vocation, Mark Peters Phd
Dissertations
Young adults today experience an extended adolescence, a period of time now commonly referred to as emerging adulthood, in which they delay undertaking the roles traditionally associated with becoming an adult in contemporary society. College has the potential to become the mentoring environment needed for emerging adults to consider their future life choices grounded in the context of their deepest beliefs, shared values, and personal passions. Since 2000, the Lilly Endowment, Inc. has invested over $2 million in 88 select religiously affiliated colleges to fund Programs for the Theological Exploration of Vocation (PTEV). These Programs were designed to help students …
Exploring Prayer Contexts And Health Outcomes: From The Chair To The Pew, E. James Baesler, Kevin Ladd
Exploring Prayer Contexts And Health Outcomes: From The Chair To The Pew, E. James Baesler, Kevin Ladd
Communication & Theatre Arts Faculty Publications
Prayer in personal, interpersonal, small, and large group contexts is described in relationship to physical, psychological, and spiritual health. A sample of college and middle-aged adults (N = 189) completed cross-sectional surveys. Quantitative analyses revealed that prayer in all contexts predicted higher levels of spiritual health, and that the strongest prayer predictors of health were: large group prayer for mental health, and private and large group prayer for spiritual health. Qualitative results revealed that prayers for physical health in close personal relationships, and table blessing prayers among family members, were two of the most common types of prayer. Suggestions for …

Ethical Challenges And Opportunities At The Edge: Incorporating Spirituality And Religion Into Psychotherapy, John C. Gonsiorek, P. Scott Richards, Kenneth I. Pargament, Mark R. Mcminn
Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program
Incorporating spirituality and religion into psychotherapy has been controversial, but recent contributions have argued the importance and provided foundations for doing so. Discussions of ethical challenges in this process are emerging, and this contribution discusses several preliminary issues, relying on the Resolution on Religious, Religion-Based and/or Religion-Derived Prejudice adopted by the American Psychological Association in 2007, as guidance when used with the American Psychological Association’s (2002) Ethical Principles of Psychologists and Code of Conduct. Specifically, this discussion of preliminary challenges addresses competence, bias, maintaining traditions and standards of psychology, and integrity in labeling services for reimbursement. Commentators deepen the discussion, …
Vincent De Paul And Jean-Jacques Olier: Unlikely Friends, Robert P. Maloney C.M.
Vincent De Paul And Jean-Jacques Olier: Unlikely Friends, Robert P. Maloney C.M.
Vincentian Studies
Robert Maloney traces the friendship of Vincent de Paul and Jean-Jacques Olier and summarizes some essential similarities and differences between them. Vincent was briefly Olier’s spiritual director and helped him persevere in his vocation. They highly regarded one another and collaborated. However, Olier was “one of the purest examples” of the French school of spirituality; Vincent was not of that school, although it influenced him. Both were Christocentric, but Vincent saw Christ in poor persons where Olier focused on the Holy Spirit. Both were concerned with following providence, but for Olier “providence” was interchangeable with “the Spirit” and it was …
Exploring Interdisciplinary Prayer Research In A Health Context, E. James Baesler
Exploring Interdisciplinary Prayer Research In A Health Context, E. James Baesler
Communication & Theatre Arts Faculty Publications
Communication, Psychology, and Sociology are three leading academic disciplines engaged in the social scientific study of prayer, the spiritual communication between a believer(s) and God, but rarely do these disciplines collaborate in interdisciplinary prayer scholarship. Possibilities for interdisciplinary prayer research in a health context are explored through a review of the literature and academic interviews. Interdisciplinary linkages in the prayer-health context are organized in an integral "all-quadrant" theoretical model, and an assessment of the viability of interdisciplinary prayer-health research is considered.

Living Waters: An Invitation To Contemplative Spirituality For The Quail Springs Church Of Christ, Wyatt E. Fenno
Doctor of Ministry Theses and Dissertations
This project addressed an acknowledged need for ministry action to promote and facilitate communal spiritual formation in the present and future life of the Quail Springs Church of Christ. The focus of the project was to present a model of contemplative spirituality determined to be accessible to the ministry context at Quail Springs. In addressing the problem of community fragmentation at Quail Springs, this model was offered as a means of grace to deepen faith and strengthen relationships in church life at Quail Springs. A pilot group of six women and six men served as the working group for this …
Marxist Class-Cultural Spirituality In Theory And Practice, George N. Lundskow
Marxist Class-Cultural Spirituality In Theory And Practice, George N. Lundskow
Peer Reviewed Articles
The paper applies Critical Theory to understand the progressive and oppressive potential of contemporary religious revival in the United States. The analysis focuses on Neopaganism as a progressive spirituality, possibly compatible with Marxist theory. Whether religion is progressive (or oppressive/reactionary) depends not on the content of beliefs, but rather, on the type of social relationship a religion establishes between the individual and society. The paper treats Neopaganism and Marxism as practices and worldviews that often inform social movements and sometimes become the basis of functioning communities. They at once correspond to political-economic agendas, but both also assert the cultural foundations …

Saint Louise De Marillac: Woman Of Substance, Woman Of God, Gertrude Foley S.C.
Saint Louise De Marillac: Woman Of Substance, Woman Of God, Gertrude Foley S.C.
Vincentian Studies
Gertrude Foley explores how we can find “relevant continuity between the saints and ourselves that can advance us along the path to holiness.” She cautions against focusing on just a few aspects of Louise de Marillac’s life. Instead, she urges us to learn about Louise’s spirituality in its entirety through her writings and to see it within the context of “the universal call to holiness.” Holiness is a total, gradual, lifelong process that encompasses everything that makes an individual and his or her life unique. It is a commitment to God made with love. Foley quotes Karl Truhlar, who says …
Teaching Prayer: Pilot Survey Of Academic Courses On Personal Prayer, E. James Baesler
Teaching Prayer: Pilot Survey Of Academic Courses On Personal Prayer, E. James Baesler
Communication & Theatre Arts Faculty Publications
The practical concerns of an individual interested in learning about prayer in an academic context are interconnected with the practical concerns about teaching an academic course on prayer. A pilot study proposed to investigate and evaluate the context and content of academic courses on personal prayer from the perspective of teaching prayer, asking what proportion of institutions of higher education offer courses on prayer, in which department, and on what level. The search was limited to the Christian faith, and in particular to private colleges and universities of the Catholic denomination. An online Internet search yielded a sample of 126 …

A Study In The Spirituality Of Louise De Marillac: As Reflective Of The French School Of Spirituality, Kathryn Lafleur S.P.
A Study In The Spirituality Of Louise De Marillac: As Reflective Of The French School Of Spirituality, Kathryn Lafleur S.P.
Vincentian Studies
This detailed article gives extensive information on the French school of spirituality, especially its major influences and characteristics. Pierre de Berulle was one of its founders, and great attention is paid to his background, his spiritual doctrine, the principles of his spirituality and the way his successors developed them further, and the language used within the school. The school was known for being “theocentric and Trinitarian, Christocentric, Marian, pastoral, and ecclesial.” Important figures of the French school profiled in this article are Jean-Jacques Olier, Jean Eudes, Francis de Sales, and Vincent de Paul. Finally, Louise de Marillac is placed within …

Spirituality And Counseling In Holistic Health: Toward Integration In Actualizing Full Potential, Mary Ann Kniess
Theses
The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between spirituality and counseling in holistic health . Forty clients and forty therapists, both male and female, from varying economic and educational backgrounds completed a one- page self-report attitudinal survey regarding the place of religion and spirituality in their life and therapeutic sessions. Each ranked issues such as forgiveness, prayer, healing in relationships, grief, death, and afterlife as to the frequency with which they arose in therapy . Participants who returned surveys on site or by mail from Missouri and Illinois were volunteers who attended Joseph Zinker ' s Gestalt …
Practicing And Professing Spirit In Law, Emily A. Hartigan
Practicing And Professing Spirit In Law, Emily A. Hartigan
Faculty Articles
God and femininity share similar positions of marginalization within the law and the legal academy: the classic division between home and business and the “feminine world of morality and love and the realm of “tough” survival skills and competition.” This marginalization, coupled with facets of American traditions, preclude progress from being achieved with respect to either, because neither is significantly part of the American public discourse, and the introduction of either is frowned upon within the academy. This marginalization is evinced by the work of people such as Michael Novak, who painted God as a small-time entrepreneur in his endeavor …

Elizabeth Seton: A Spirituality For Mission, Gertrude Foley S.C.
Elizabeth Seton: A Spirituality For Mission, Gertrude Foley S.C.
Vincentian Studies
Elizabeth Seton did not have our contemporary understanding of spirituality and mission. Nonetheless, her writings and a consideration of her life in general offer a sense of her perspective on them. Gertrude Foley stresses that “spirituality is holistic, an integrating dynamic in one’s life” that motivates mission or action. Foley further defines mission as a life that is “a channel . . . of God’s love.” By identifying five obstacles to mission and learning how Elizabeth overcame them, we discover how she can guide us. The five obstacles are: being self-centered, being pious without putting faith in action, failing to …
The Role Of Saint Vincent De Paul And Saint Louise De Marillac As Architects And As Moving Spirits Behind The Spiritual And Mission Renewal In Seventeenth-Century France, Raymond Deville S.S.
The Role Of Saint Vincent De Paul And Saint Louise De Marillac As Architects And As Moving Spirits Behind The Spiritual And Mission Renewal In Seventeenth-Century France, Raymond Deville S.S.
Vincentian Studies
Vincent de Paul and Louise de Marillac had a major role in the seventeenth-century French church. Both knew people at the highest levels of government and the Church; Vincent “was involved in almost all the great events of his time.” Their focus on mission and charity was one they shared with others of the French school of spirituality. Indeed, the seventeenth century was one of missionary activities. The spiritual lives and teaching of Vincent and Louise centered on Jesus and the Holy Spirit. Vincent differed from the French school in his particular emphasis on Jesus as the first missionary, the …

An Exploration Of A.A.'S Twelve Step Spirituality For The Purpose Of Communicating A Right Understanding Of Law And Gospel To Recovering Lutheran Alcoholics, Gary Galen
Doctor of Ministry Major Applied Project
This study addresses presenting Law and Gospel to recovering Lutheran alcoholics in the Twelve Step program of Alcoholics Anonymous. The Twelve Steps offer a spirituality which has often caused confusion among confessional Lutherans. This involved interviewing recovering Lutheran alcoholics, non-alcoholic Lutherans and clergy. The Twelve Steps were evaluated according to Law and Gospel. A brief study of the influence of American Civil Religion and Two Kingdom Theology gave a backdrop in which to place the Twelve Steps. Practical ways in which pastors and congregations could better minister to recovering Lutheran alcoholics were included.
The Spirituality Of Louise De Marillac: Formed By The Spirit For Charity, Louise Sullivan D.C.
The Spirituality Of Louise De Marillac: Formed By The Spirit For Charity, Louise Sullivan D.C.
Vincentian Studies
This article presents “a spiritual portrait” of Louise de Marillac as reconstructed from Vincent’s letters to her and explores her prayer life using her writings. After 1623, Louise went on a complex and difficult journey of faith that was shaped by her temperament, her experience, and her time. She was extremely intelligent and capable, but also needed frequent spiritual reassurance, which Vincent de Paul provided throughout their relationship. However, she was well educated in the Bible and in spiritual practices before she met him. Her beginning was ascetic, with a demanding prayer schedule. Such discipline was related to her self-doubt. …
"God Is My God": The Generative Integrity Of Louise De Marillac, Vie Thorgren
"God Is My God": The Generative Integrity Of Louise De Marillac, Vie Thorgren
Vincentian Studies
Psychology and spiritual theology are used in this personal reflection on Louise de Marillac’s generative integrity. Christian generativity is fulfilling others’ needs and doing God’s will without any expectation of return or even success. Louise had trouble trusting God, herself, and others because she lacked nurturing in her early childhood. She was able to overcome this through her friendship with Vincent de Paul and “her unique relationship with the generative Jesus.” These two elements enabled her to become generative herself. She wanted to imitate the hidden life of Jesus by doing God’s will, unseen by all but God. Author Vie …
