Maternal Perceptions Of Agency In Intergenerational Transmission Of Spanish: The Case Of Latinos In The U.S. Midwest, Isabel Velázquez

Spanish Language and Literature Papers

This article examines the ways in which a group of first-generation Latino immigrants to the U.S. Midwest conceptualized their role in their children’s bilingual development. Respondents were asked to identify the individuals or institutions on which their children’s language and academic development depended, as well as household practices perceived as conducive to Spanish maintenance, and perceived obstacles to their children’s use of Spanish in the domains of home, school, and community. Discussion centers on maternal perceptions of agency because of the centrality of the mother in intergenerational minority language transmission. It is argued here that immigrant mothers’ perceptions of agency …

Phonetic Realization Of /P, T, K/ In Spanish-English Code-Switching, Gisela Simental Jan 2014

Phonetic Realization Of /P, T, K/ In Spanish-English Code-Switching, Gisela Simental

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

The aim of this investigation is to contribute to the relatively unexplored area of phonetic realization of sounds during code switching. The present study will focus on the analysis of voice onset time of voiceless stops in stressed word initial position. Spanish and English are ideal languages to test how bilinguals process and produce the low-level phonetic properties of stops during CS. Both languages have the same set of voiceless stops: /p, t, k/, yet these stops have different phonetic (or acoustic) characteristics in each language. Data was collected from the naturalistic speech of balanced bilinguals who were exposed to …

Declarative And Yes/No Question Intonation In Montevideo Spanish, Deborah Silva De Araujo Dec 2013

Declarative And Yes/No Question Intonation In Montevideo Spanish, Deborah Silva De Araujo

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

This study offers for the first time empirical and theoretical data on the intonation of the Spanish variety spoken in Montevideo, the capital city of Uruguay. It proposes a phonological analysis of broad focus declarative and yes/no question utterances of simple, coordinated, and subordinated sentences recorded during fieldwork in Montevideo. The analysis relies on the Autosegmental-Metrical (AM) model (Pierrehumbert 1980) and the Sp_ToBI transcription system (Beckman et al 2002, Estebas-Vilaplana and Prieto 2009). The analysis of the F0 track shows that coordinated and subordinated sentences of both declarative and yes/no question utterances were parsed into utterance-medial IP (aligned with the …

Language Contact And Variation In The Spanish Of Catalonia, Nikoleta Papa

Communication

When taking into consideration the language situation of Spain, it is important to realize that the presence of different languages varies with each region of the country and that the knowledge and status of these languages impact the use of Castilian. Catalonia is one such region in which it is important to understand and be able to recognize the differences in the Spanish language production of bilingual Castilian/Catalan speakers as opposed to monolingual Spanish speakers. The subject matter of this study is the variation in the use of Spanish language in Catalonia. Catalan has been spoken in the history of …

On Spanish Loanwords And Loanblends In Hawal'i Creole English, Robert N. Smead Dec 2013

On Spanish Loanwords And Loanblends In Hawal'i Creole English, Robert N. Smead

Pacific Studies

Hawai'i Creole English (HCE) has been the object of much linguistic research. Virtually all researchers agree that its principal lexical sources include English, Hawaiian, and Japanese. Other languages, such as Chinese and Portuguese, have also contributed. To elate, however, few sources have considered Spanish as an important lexical source for HCE. The research reported herein attempts to remedy that oversight by considering ten putative loanwords and loanblends thought to derive from Spanish. These include ethnic markers associated with and local dishes brought by Filipino and Puerto Rican immigrants in the early twentieth century. By documenting cultural traditions and consulting authoritative …

Bilingual Language Switching And Selection At The Phonetic Level: Asymmetrical Transfer In Vot Production, Daniel J. Olson Nov 2013

Bilingual Language Switching And Selection At The Phonetic Level: Asymmetrical Transfer In Vot Production, Daniel J. Olson

School of Languages and Cultures Faculty Publications

The present study examines the effect of language switching on phonetic production, contributing to an understanding of the underlying interaction between a bilingual’s two phonetic systems. While phonetic interaction has been studied in non-switched and codeswitched paradigms, effects of connected speech (e.g. speech planning, pragmatics, etc.) may obscure underlying phonetic interaction. To investigate the impact of language switching, a cued picture-naming task was employed, with Spanish-English bilinguals of differing dominance profiles naming pictures in English and Spanish. Stimuli were produced both as switched and non-switched tokens. Addressing the impact of context, stimuli were presented in three contexts varying in quantity …

Teaching Pronunciation: Is Explicit Phonetics Instruction Beneficial For Fl Learners?, Elizabeth M. Kissling Oct 2013

Teaching Pronunciation: Is Explicit Phonetics Instruction Beneficial For Fl Learners?, Elizabeth M. Kissling

Latin American, Latino and Iberian Studies Faculty Publications

Pronunciation instruction has been shown to improve learners’ L2 accent in some, though certainly not all, cases. A core component of traditional pronunciation instruction is explicit lessons in L2 phonetics. Studies suggest that Spanish FL learners improve their pronunciation after receiving instruction, but the effect of phonetics instruction has not been directly compared with other pedagogical alternatives. This study reports on the pronunciation gains that first, second, and third year learners (n = 95) made after receiving either explicit instruction in Spanish phonetics or a more implicit treatment with similar input, practice, and feedback. The target phones included a …

Understanding Mood Selection For Nominal Clauses Headed By El Hecho De Que In Spanish, George P. Myers, Dr. Jeffrey S. Turley Sep 2013

Understanding Mood Selection For Nominal Clauses Headed By El Hecho De Que In Spanish, George P. Myers, Dr. Jeffrey S. Turley

Journal of Undergraduate Research

In A Dictionary of Linguistics and Phonetics, David Crystal semantically defines the mood of a verb as the “attitudes on the part of a speaker towards the factual content of the utterance, e.g. uncertainty, definiteness, vagueness, possibility.”1 While Crystal’s definition may give the mood of a verb an orderly appearance, more than one grammarian has appropriately compared understanding the factors leading up to mood selection to untangling a large ball of knotted string. With considerable credibility, most grammarians claim to have organized much of the tangle; however, few can explain how to separate the subjunctive mood from the indicative …

Relating Linguistic Competence To Culture : How Bilingual Spanish-English Social Workers Who Speak English As A First Language Experience And Conceptualize Culture In Their Practice With Spanish Speaking Clients, Audra T. Winn Sep 2013

Relating Linguistic Competence To Culture : How Bilingual Spanish-English Social Workers Who Speak English As A First Language Experience And Conceptualize Culture In Their Practice With Spanish Speaking Clients, Audra T. Winn

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

Cultural experiences and conceptualizations of native English bilingual social workers have not been dominant in the ongoing discussion of bilingualism and cultural competence in social work practice, education, and literature. This exploratory study examined practice based cultural experiences of bilingual Spanish-English social workers native to English who work with Spanish speaking clients. Specifically, the focus of the study was centered on how these social workers conceptualize their experiences through a cultural lens in their Spanish language work. Through eleven qualitative interviews with Master's level social workers who use their non-native Spanish in social work practice, this study looked at how …

Walden Faculty and Staff Publications

Autism is an increasingly prevalent developmental neurological condition that manifests in pervasive impairments in social interaction, communication, and stereotypic behavior and interests. Early identification leads to positive long-term outcomes. At present, all standardized rating instruments are written in English; therefore, the purpose of the present study was to adapt the Gilliam Autism Rating Scale-2 from English into Spanish using the state-of-the-art procedures described in the literature. The English instrument was translated into Spanish, back-translated into English, and then revised using an iterative process. The adapted instrument's psychometric qualities were substantiated. An alpha coefficient of .96 verified the adapted instrument's internal …

Effectiveness Of Text-Messaging In Spanish Vocabulary Teaching / Learning, Flavia Melisa Velasquez Aug 2013

Effectiveness Of Text-Messaging In Spanish Vocabulary Teaching / Learning, Flavia Melisa Velasquez

Theses

Mobile learning is the attainment of any knowledge or skill through using mobile technology, anywhere, anytime (Hashemi et al. 2477). Hashemi and Ghasemi also state that mobile phones are one of the most successful technologies in the past two decades (2947). More and more educators are using mobile phones as an educational tool. Second Language Acquisition has also been redefined due to the advent of Mobile learning and text-messaging. Khazaie and Ketabi explain that "the value of deploying technology at the service of learning and teaching seems to be both self-evident and unavoidable" (174). There are many studies of using …

While hiking with her brother, a second year environmental Peace Corps volunteer, to visit the home and garden of a Nicaraguan native, she reflects on the changes she sees in her brother and her inability to communicate in a foreign country. She struggles to overcome her feelings of linguistic isolation while still being fascinated by the culture around her. The piece ends on a lovely image of universal understanding.

The Development Of Differential Object Marking In Spanish-English Bilingual Children, Mariluz Ortiz Vergara Apr 2013

The Development Of Differential Object Marking In Spanish-English Bilingual Children, Mariluz Ortiz Vergara

Open Access Theses

In monolingual development, the acquisition of differential object marking (DOM) is completed by three years of age (Rodríguez- Mondoñedo, 2008). However, among bilingual speakers, the development and use of the marker at a young age is less predictable. Spanish marks animate and specific direct objects with the preposition-a; English in contrast does not. Based on previous studies documenting transfer in areas where Spanish and English differ, it was predicted that bilingual children would experience difficulties with the use of the preposition both in matrix and left dislocated sentences (CLLD) (Montrul, 2004, Montrul & Bowles, 2009). This study tested 14 simultaneous …

The existence of an extensive body of literature on the Present Perfect (PP), both Spanish-specific (cf. Alarcos Llorach 1947, Copple 2011, Escobar 1997, Gili Gaya 1972, Howe 2013, Rodríguez Louro 2009, Schwenter 1994, Schwenter & Torres Cacoullos 2008, inter alia) and cross-linguistic studies (cf. Bybee, Perkins, & Pagliuca, 1994, Comrie 1976 Harris, 1982, Squartini & Bertinetto 2000, inter alia), attests to the complexity of accurately describing the uses, meanings and functions of the PP. Among the studies of the PP in Spanish, two main approaches are employed. In one approach, the grammaticalization, analysis of temporal and aspectual uses of the …

University studies in the Spanish language are often times confined to the classroom. However, more and more programs have been implementing civic engagement in the Hispanic community into the curriculum to create a service-learning experience. This study sought to determine the effectiveness of service-learning in enhancing communication techniques. Twenty undergraduate students at the University of Kentucky were surveyed at the onset and the conclusion of one semester while simultaneously serving the Hispanic community. The students, on average, increased the frequency of communication techniques after a semester of service-learning. Students who participate in a service-learning program often times see a result …

The Acquisition Of Sociolinguistic Variation By Study Abroad Students : The Case Of American Students In Madrid, Kathryn Lee Ringer-Hilfinger

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

The current investigation seeks to contribute to the emerging body of research on second language variation in Spanish. A range of dialect-specific variables is considered, both morphological and phonological. Learner acquisition of these variables is measured within a study abroad context through oral and written longitudinal data over the course of an 8-month period. Previous studies conducted in this area have considered pronoun use (Geeslin and Gudmestad 2008a; Salgado-Robles 2012) the use of /theta/ (Geeslin and Gudmestad 2008b; Willis et. al. 2009; Ringer-Hilfinger 2012; Knouse 2012), intonation strategies (Henriksen et al. 2010), and perfective past time reference (Geeslin et al. …

The Officialization Of Spanish In Mid-Nineteenth-Century Spain: The Academy’S Authority, Laura Villa

Publications and Research

This chapter addresses the role played by language and schools in the history of Spain’s nineteenth-century liberal nation-building project. Both the Spanish language and the public school system were strategic sites where national consensus could be built and, consequently, the achievement of linguistic homogeneity through education became a central goal for the state. In particular, I examine the conditions that favored the linguistic norms developed by the Royal Spanish Academy and the debates that surrounded their officialization and imposition in the emerging national school system. While the historiography of Spanish has traditionally described the selection and implementation of the RAE’s …
