Two Ways Of Knowing: World Views, And Their Impact On Mankind's Ability To Understand, Michael Alan Martella Jan 1983

Two Ways Of Knowing: World Views, And Their Impact On Mankind's Ability To Understand, Michael Alan Martella

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

The history of intellectual debate has long included a basic conflict among those who seek to understand the way that mankind knows, or tries to gain knowledge. Knowing has typically been addressed from one of two perspectives; either analytically or intuitively. Analytic, outer knowing is based on the idea that a reasonable and logical examination of the variables will eventually produce a clear and total picture of the knowledge being presented or investigated. Intuitive, inner knowing has a different perspective, and seeks to know a thing sympathetically, understanding its nature by insight.

Population Change As A Spatio-Temporal Process: Costa Rica, 1950 - 1973 - An Analysis Of The Diffusion Of Demographic Transition, Frederik Klaas Klijzing Jan 1982

Population Change As A Spatio-Temporal Process: Costa Rica, 1950 - 1973 - An Analysis Of The Diffusion Of Demographic Transition, Frederik Klaas Klijzing

Digitized Theses

This study provides a diffusion analysis of changes in fertility, mortality and migration in Costa Rica, 1950-1973, as part of its process of demographic modernization. To this end, the national territory is divided into 64 observation units of variable size and shape, following county boundaries in 1950. Later sub-divisions were brought back to this original situation in order to control for boundary changes. The capital county of San Jose is conceptualized as the main innovation center from where all socio-cultural change originates. Contagious diffusion effects are measured on a distance scale, from county seat to San Jose: the farther away, …

Class Structure And Ideology: An Empirical Analysis Of Neo-Marxist Class Theory And Political Attitudes And Beliefs., George Frank Lord Iii Jan 1982

Class Structure And Ideology: An Empirical Analysis Of Neo-Marxist Class Theory And Political Attitudes And Beliefs., George Frank Lord Iii

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study examines the relationship between the infrastructure and the superstructure in the monopoly stage of capitalism. With the rise of monopoly capital a major issue of contention has been the development of a new class structure, the debate has centered around the nature and existence of the "middle class(es)". The three major issues are: a split in the working class due to the rise of an 'affluent worker'; a separation of mental and manual labor; and the development of a managerial class. The result has four Marxist alternative explanations of the middle class: contradictory locations, simple polarization, new petty …

Farmers' Participation In Rural Development Programs, Municipality Of Samarinda, East Kalimantan, Indonesia., Muhammad Yunus Rasyid Jan 1982

Farmers' Participation In Rural Development Programs, Municipality Of Samarinda, East Kalimantan, Indonesia., Muhammad Yunus Rasyid

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The degree of people's participation in development programs appears to be the major determinant of development successes or failures. However, the strategy which makes participation efforts successful remains a mystery. This study aims to unravel that mystery by investigating factors significantly associated with farmers' participation in rural development programs. Using a probability random sample of 215 households from the rural community in the municipality of Samarinda, Indonesia, this study explores four major groups of variables (social exchange, individualism, social structure, and socio-political atmosphere) as they encompass factors associated with the degree of farmers' participation. The findings suggest that the social …

An Analysis Of Family Travel Time: A Vehicle For Energy Conservation., Grace Elliott Tasker

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Data from a regional sample of 2100 two-parent, two-child families drawn from communities in eleven states including New York, Oregon, North Carolina, Utah, Connecticut, Virginia, Oklahoma, California, Texas, Louisiana, and Wisconsin, were collected in 1977-79 as part of United States Department of Agriculture Regional Project 113, "An Interstate Urban/Rural Comparison of Families' Time Use.". The results of this analysis were presented in the framework of exchange theory and values theory using Robin Williams' values schema. The analysis was discussed in terms of possible application for energy conservation. The data were analyzed using analyses of covariance and analyses of variance models. …

Religion And Racial Change: A Comparative Study Of Clergy Attitudes Over Time., John Jules Nelson Jan 1982

Religion And Racial Change: A Comparative Study Of Clergy Attitudes Over Time., John Jules Nelson

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study was designed as an empirical investigation into attitudes of racial prejudice amongst Mississippi Methodist clergymen. Based on Durkheim's theories of the importance of surrounding cultural factors upon religious life, causal relationships for this target group were sought within the context of both regional (southern) and national cultural norms. Basic hypotheses were that clergy prejudice would vary directly with age, fundamentalism, and perception of prejudice of parishioners and community; and inversely with education, urban location of ministry, social actionist stance and agreement with denominational policy. It was also predicted that the mean prejudice score would decrease over the time …

Socio-Cultural And Attitudinal Change In The Modernization Process: A Study Of Acehnese Society In Transition (Sumatra)., Bahrein Tuhumalem Sugihen Jan 1982

Socio-Cultural And Attitudinal Change In The Modernization Process: A Study Of Acehnese Society In Transition (Sumatra)., Bahrein Tuhumalem Sugihen

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

It was assumed that the introduction of large scale industry into a traditional agrarian society would bring about some changes in the values, beliefs, attitudes, and behavior of individual members of the social system. Such changes are related to one's place of residence as well as personal characteristics. It was hypothesized that (1) one's religious-behavior and one's attitudes toward some consequences of industrialization (modernism) are related to one's place of residence, age, educational attainment, and one's degree of contact with industry; (2) one's degree of contact with the industry is related to or effected by one's place of residence, age, …

Rural Community Influentials: Participation In Local Voluntary Organizations., Jusoh Nordin B Muhamad Jan 1982

Rural Community Influentials: Participation In Local Voluntary Organizations., Jusoh Nordin B Muhamad

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this study is to identify the variables or types of variables that are possible predictors of organizational participation. Three categories of independent variables--ecological, situational, and individualistic variables are investigated. The sample consists of 442 rural community influentials from twelve counties in six southern states. Both the Spearman's test of correlation as well as multiple regression analysis are employed to assess the relationships among the independent and dependent variables. The zero-order correlations show that ecological variables (population size, percent white, and urbanization) and situational variables (organization availability and organization diversity) are generally highly correlated with organizational participation (p < 0.001). On the other hand, individualistic variables (occupation, education, age, and length of residence) are generally not significantly related to organizational participation, particularly in membership in influential organizations. The multiple regression analysis reveals that the three categories of variables account for about 20 percent of the variance in membership in influential organizations, and about 15 percent of the variance in the general measures of participation (simple memberships in any set of organizations, attendance at meetings and holding offices). Situational variables are found to have the most influence on membership in influential organizations, whereas population size (an ecological variable) is found to have the most influence on participation as indicated by the general measures of participation. Situational variables account for about 13.5 percent of the variance in membership in influential organizations, although the percentage of explained variance in the general measures of participation is less than 2 percent. Ecological variables, on the other hand, account for about 9 percent of the variance in organizational participation. One of the important tasks of the study is to examine whether organizational participation is related to community influence. Although there is some evidence that participation is associated with influence, the amount of variance explained by organizational participation is rather weak (less than 9 percent). Overall, the study suggests that structural variables (ecological and situational variables) are more important predictors of participation than individualistic variables. Hence, any explanation of the phenomenon of participation will be incomplete if structural factors are ignored.

The Social Environments Of Nursing Homes And Their Consequences For The Styles Of Participation Of Older Residents., Susan Mclaughlin Cole Jan 1981

The Social Environments Of Nursing Homes And Their Consequences For The Styles Of Participation Of Older Residents., Susan Mclaughlin Cole

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This exploratory, descriptive study of the social environments of two nursing homes and of the styles of participation that old residents develop has been guided by the symbolic interactionist premise that people act toward things on the basis of the meanings these things have for them. Participant observation was the primary data gathering technique, but two survey type instruments were also used. The goals of the study were to make contributions to (1) the building of grounded, substantive theory in social gerontology; (2) improving data gathering techniques appropriate for studies of old people; and (3) solving practical problems in nursing …

From Slave To Free Labor In The Brazilian Sugar Industry: The Political-Economy Of Social Control And Crime In Pernambuco, 1850-1922, Martha Diane Knisely Huggins Jan 1981

From Slave To Free Labor In The Brazilian Sugar Industry: The Political-Economy Of Social Control And Crime In Pernambuco, 1850-1922, Martha Diane Knisely Huggins

Doctoral Dissertations

Between 1850 and the turn of the century the dominant mode of production in the export sector of Pernambuco shifted from a slave to quasi-capitalist. The labor transition was not an evolutionary outgrowth of existing work relations--it involved struggle and coercion. The first part of this research shows how repressive social control effected the transformation of the mode of production; the second part looks at a product of the transformation, crime.

This research focuses on a frequently overlooked type of human intervention, social control, as a source of structural change, and places the motives of modernizing elites in a less …

The Sociological Critique Of American Sociology, 1960-1978: Its Shortcomings And Its Promise, Gerald Allen Ginocchio Jan 1981

The Sociological Critique Of American Sociology, 1960-1978: Its Shortcomings And Its Promise, Gerald Allen Ginocchio

Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation represents an attempt to explicate and critically analyze an important movement in contemporary American sociology. This movement, which I am calling the sociological critique of American sociology, aimed to change predominant trends in American sociology. Basic tenets of sociological practice were called into question, such as the principle of value neutrality, an empirical methodology, and a functionalist theoretical framework. The goal of this critical movement was to bring about a more significant sociology, a sociology which would lead the way to the realization of a more humane social order. In general, however, the criticisms offered by these critical …

Women And Work In Transition: Their Work Participation, Social Class, Sex Role And Political Attitudes, And Alienation, Lawrence Allen Rosenberg Jan 1981

Women And Work In Transition: Their Work Participation, Social Class, Sex Role And Political Attitudes, And Alienation, Lawrence Allen Rosenberg

Doctoral Dissertations

The focus of this dissertation is the transition of American women's economic positions during the last two centuries. Women's participation in the economy has developed from that of the preindustrial period, in which women were primarily partners in an agricultural economy, through several stages during the development of industrialism and urbanism, when most women were housewives, to the present situation in which over 50% of women are active participants in the labor force of an advanced industrial economy. This transition has been characterized not just by increasing numbers and changing characteristics of women participating in the work force, but by …

Marxist Paradigm And Academic Freedom, Dmitri N. Shalin Jul 1980

Marxist Paradigm And Academic Freedom, Dmitri N. Shalin

Sociology Faculty Research

The Russian October Revolution dealt a devastating blow to Marxism from which Marxist sociology did not begin to recover until recently. Stalin's "contributions" to Marxist theory and practice had a particularly adverse effect on the fate of Marxism in the West. Whatever hopes were generated by the de-Stalinization campaign in the Soviet Union proved short-lived. By the time Soviet tanks entered Prague and Soviet authorities resumed show trials, few intellectuals in the capitalist West could speak of Soviet Marxism without acute resentment or at least tacit embarrassment.

In Mills's words, ". . . marxism-leninism has become an official rhetoric with …

Perceiving The Causes Of Cigarette Smoking: A Study Of Children And Adolescents., Rebecca Marie Watson Jan 1980

Perceiving The Causes Of Cigarette Smoking: A Study Of Children And Adolescents., Rebecca Marie Watson

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Attribution theory (Heider, 1958; Jones and Davis, 1965; Jones and Nisbett, 1972; Bem, 1967) has been modified from its usual experimental setting to serve as a theoretical model for a survey of cigarette smoking behavior. The smoking behavior of "significant others" is analyzed as an important information source in the process of belief formation. The instrument for the study was a "Health Information Questionnaire" which was given to 3014 school children (grades 3-12) in Bogalusa, Louisiana, during the 1976-1977 school year. Frequencies and percentages of students' own smoking behavior and of students by the smoking behavior of "significant others" were …

The Impact Of The Structural Parameters Of Age And Race Upon Residents' Evaluations Of Community., Gary Martin Stokley Sr Jan 1980

The Impact Of The Structural Parameters Of Age And Race Upon Residents' Evaluations Of Community., Gary Martin Stokley Sr

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The research reported in this dissertation deals directly with an individual's perception of his or her community and family circumstances. The major question explored deals with what structural factors influence individuals' perceptions. In order to examine this question, the study primarily employs structural parameters such as age, sex, race, community, etc. to note differences or similarities among subpopulations. Specifically, the study explores the differences or similarities between adults and adolescents in rural communities. The data includes both an adult and adolescent sample taken in three rural communities in South Louisiana. The racial composition of the communities includes black, Indian, and …

The Seasonality Of Pathology: A Sociological Analysis, M Keith Farrington Jan 1980

The Seasonality Of Pathology: A Sociological Analysis, M Keith Farrington

Doctoral Dissertations

This study looks at the seasonal periodicity of a number of different social pathologies, including suicide, mortality resulting from disease, the onset of physical illness, and criminal behavior. Using time-series data from the United States, for 132 consecutive months between 1965-1975, it is found that virtually all of the behaviors investigated do demonstrate some consistent pattern of seasonal incidence.

A sociological theory, based upon the macro-level concept, "the pace of social life," is suggested as the cause of these seasonal variations in pathology. This theory contends that, for reasons which are cultural, economic and/or climatological in nature, certain periods of …

Validity And Reliability Of Final Say Decision Measures Of Marital Power, Craig Marshall Allen Jan 1980

Validity And Reliability Of Final Say Decision Measures Of Marital Power, Craig Marshall Allen

Doctoral Dissertations

The final say decision measure of marital power has fared poorly in several studies which have examined its validity. This research was designed to explore two possible explanations for these findings: (1) inadequate or inappropriate procedures in previous validity studies, and (2) weaknesses of the final say measure itself, including insensitivity to item saliency and the discrepancies in responses between family members.

Several US samples and one from India provided the data for this study. These samples had been gathered in other studies in which husbands', wives' and/or children had responded to the final say decision index. Up to three …
