Previous research has looked at many factors individually as to what the underlying factors could be, but none examine the main factors, sleep, physical activity, social media, and digital technology, simultaneously and little is known about how these factors affect anxiety and depression, as well as the …

Offensive Content Detection In Online Social Platforms, Ebuka Okpala Aug 2024

Offensive Content Detection In Online Social Platforms, Ebuka Okpala

All Dissertations

Online social platforms enable users to connect with large, diverse audiences and the ability for a message or content to flow from one user to another user, user to followers, followers to user, and followers to followers. Of course, the advantages of this are apparent, and the dangers are also clearly obvious. The user-generated content could be abusive, offensive, or hateful to other users, possibly leading to adverse health effects or offline harm. As more of society's public discourse and interaction move online and these platforms grow and increase their reach, it is inherently important to protect the safety of …

All Dissertations

This study investigated the dynamics of social media influence on marketing with a focus on two key variables, information richness and influencer follower count, to determine how these characteristics influenced customer purchase intents. In the search for more successful advertising strategies, current marketing trends have capitalized on social media influencers’ expanding role in determining customer behavior. In some cases, this has led to unethical behavior and subsequent mistrust, underlining the challenge of maintaining openness and ethical standard in digital marketing.

This quantitative study used surveys to investigate consumer experiences with various influencer content forms and follower counts. The research specifically …

International Review of Humanities Studies

The phenomenon of sharenting refers to the practice of parents, particularly mothers, sharing personal information in the form of text, photos, or videos about their child-rearing experiences and journey to parenthood on social media platforms. Social media, as a space of simulation, is considered to present an idealized version of parenting, showcasing perfect moments and achievements. This paper critically explores how the phenomenon of sharenting, especially by millennial mothers in Indonesia, contributes to the construction of family life representations that underlie parents' adaptation to idealized parenting standards on social media platforms. The paper samples sharenting content from several Instagram accounts …

“How I Dress Is No One’S Business!”: Fashion As A Subversive Language Of Resistance Among Female Christian Celebrities In Ghana, Amanda E. Gyesi

Communication ETDs

Influenced by burgeoning literature on feminism and feminist theories, specifically within the African context, I analyze the intersection of religion and celebrity culture among a select group of women in Ghana. Using the African feminist critical discourse analysis, guided by Stuart Hall’s encoding and decoding model, this research examines how female Christian celebrities in Ghana enact resistance, project their agency, and shape their identities through their fashion statements and sartorial choices, hence contributing to the broader discourse on fashion communication among religious women.

Through a critical analysis of Instagram comments and YouTube interview transcripts, I argue that fashion communication among …

Modeling Virus Diffusion On Social Media Networks With The Smirq Model, Justin Browning, Arnav Mazumder, Gowri Nanda Jul 2024

Modeling Virus Diffusion On Social Media Networks With The Smirq Model, Justin Browning, Arnav Mazumder, Gowri Nanda

Rose-Hulman Undergraduate Mathematics Journal

As social networking services become more complex and widespread, users become increasingly susceptible to becoming infected with malware and risk their data being compromised. In the United States, it costs the government billions of dollars annually to handle malware attacks. Additionally, computer viruses can be spread through schools, businesses, and individuals’ personal devices and accounts. Malware affecting larger groups of people causes problems with privacy, personal files, and financial security. Thus, we developed the probabilistic SMIRQ (pSMIRQ) model that shows how a virus spreads through a generated network as a way to track and prevent future viruses. Our model is …

Digital Critical Pedagogy: A Collaborative Narrative Literature Review, Ashley Hinck, Lauren Angelone, Ashley Theuring, Karin Admiraal, Jody Googins, Teresa Young, Wendy Maxian

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

At the intersection of an ongoing global pandemic and equity-focused social movements, critical and digital pedagogies became both necessary and important. Digital ways of teaching made education possible when we could not be in person, and provided alternative modes of learning and thinking, but also exacerbated existing inequalities. In this project, we engage in a narrative literature review to examine how digital critical pedagogy (DCP) has been encountered and framed in higher education pedagogy research from 2020-2022. We ask the question: How is DCP being defined, operationalized, and enacted in the emerging research literature? We argue that the analysis of …

From Viral Rumors To Fact-Checked Information: The Influence Of Social Media Platforms And Fact-Checking Organizations On Public Trust During The Covid-19 Crisis, Chinyere Linda Agbasiere

Theses and Dissertations

The COVID-19 pandemic not only disseminated a viral health threat worldwide but highlighted the rapid spread of misinformation, commonly called an "infodemic." This study investigates the influence of social media and fact-checking organizations in shaping public trust and information consumption during the pandemic. Utilizing a mixed-method approach of surveys and interviews, I analyzed 9 interviews. The interviews were analyzed using thematic analysis (Braun & Clarke, 2006) and Owen's (1984) principles of recurrence, repetition, and forcefulness, and three main themes were developed inductively. The findings reveal that while social media was a primary source of information, it also served as a …

The Qualitative Report

The relevance of social media platforms in our daily lives is intensifying. Social media have become a "showcase" for our life experiences. In addition, they represent a range of dimensions of our status in the virtual and actual social world. These two factors trigger people to construct particular identities to thrive in dual social ecosystems. Subsequently, Tiktok's prominence as a current trending social media platform with a total of 500 million users globally transforms its function from a communication medium to a medium for gaining social capital. This phenomenon notably influences Indonesian society, with people being heavily invested in that …

Scaling Expertise: A Note On Homophily In Online Discourse And Content Moderation, Dylan Weber Jun 2024

Scaling Expertise: A Note On Homophily In Online Discourse And Content Moderation, Dylan Weber

New England Journal of Public Policy

It is now empirically clear that the structure of online discourse tends toward homophily; users strongly prefer to interact with content and other users that are similar to them. I review the evidence for the ubiquity of homophily in discourse and highlight some of its worst effects including narrowed information landscape for users and increased spread of misinformation. I then discuss the current state of moderation frameworks at large social media platforms and how they are ill-equipped to deal with structural trends in discourse such as homophily. Finally, I sketch a moderation framework based on a principal of “scaling expertise” …

#Disgusted: Identifying Potential Sub-Factors Of Moral Disgust Through Reflexive Thematic Analysis Of Tweets, Ryan Statton, Alison Bacon, Jaysan Charlesford, Sylvia Terbeck

School of Psychology

Social media provides an untapped resource for exploring Moral Disgust. We therefore drew on ‘tweets’ about Moral Disgust (k=526) to better conceptualise the situations, people, and concepts users found Disgusting. Our Reflexive Thematic Analysis identified two themes and accompanying subthemes: Hierarchical Disgust and Third-Party Disgust. Hierarchical Disgust was constructed from expressions of Disgust directed to power structures, abuses of power, and leaders, whereas Third-Party Disgust comprised expressions directed at negative outcomes for others, often in the form of discrimination or harm. Both themes served as a form of group protection through out-group distancing and normative in-group policing. Importantly, this research …
