Anime: A Qualitative Study Exploring Miyazaki’S Influence On Fans And Fan Art Through The Perspective Of Visual Communication Within The Sociocultural And Cybernetic Traditions, Lynda C. Welch
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Visual communication has been an acknowledged form of human communication for millennia, dating back to prehistoric cave paintings. Aristotle noted its importance, although it lost its prominence as a recognized communicative form until the 20th century, when scholars such as Innis, McLuhan, Postman, and Foss expanded upon its importance. This identification was a crucial point in visual communication, heralding the birth of comics, film, television, animation, and Japanese anime. Lamarre, McCloud, and McLuhan were a few theorists who grasped the significance of animation and visual communication, although this recognition did not extend to fan art and the visual communication possibilities …

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Since the widespread adoption of social media in the 2010s, many libraries and archives have begun to use social media engagement as part of their outreach. While likes, retweets, and follows can be easily measured, there are also qualitative aspects of social media engagement that can illuminate other aspects of repositories' social media communication with their users. This article looks at historical trends in qualitative analysis of social media and suggests ways in which libraries and archives can incorporate qualitative analysis into their social media strategy.

Challenging Beliefs: Examining The Efficacy Of Corrections For Conspiratorial And Partisan Misinformation, Ava Zwolinski
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The threat of misinformation is widely acknowledged among researchers and laypeople (NORC, 2021). When misinformation coalesces with conspiracy theories, the repercussions can be especially dangerous, sometimes even fatal. Events such as the January 6th insurrection and the Buffalo Tops Supermarket shooting were both, in part, inspired by misleading information and conspiracy theories (Burke, 2022; Dawsey, 2023). While misinformation involving conspiracy theories is recognized as possibly posing a greater threat to correction efforts (Lewandowsky, 2021a), no study has yet experimentally manipulated the presence or absence of conspiratorial elements within misinformation. This dissertation explores whether conspiratorial misinformation is more difficult to correct …

The Challenges Of Next-Gen Insurgency, Steven Metz
The US Army War College Quarterly: Parameters
States and their security forces often assume future insurgency will be versions of Mao Zedong’s “people’s war,” and counterinsurgency remains backward looking without a theoretical foundation to situate it within broader global security environment and armed-conflict trends. Next-gen insurgency will be networked, swarming, global, and focused on narrative-centric conflict and integrated cost imposition, and social media and the virtual world will be its central battlespaces. No nation has fully grasped that the “people’s war” reflected the military, economic, political, informational, technological, and social conditions of its time. Through an examination of insurgency’s nature, character, patterns, and trends and a thought …

The onset of the COVID-19 global health crisis coincided with an unprecedented rise in health misinformation and false narratives related to the disease. This simultaneous spread of accurate and inaccurate information, referred to as an infodemic, has had observable impacts on the trajectory of the pandemic and the future of public health. While health misinformation has been a factor in previous outbreaks, the increased prominence of social media as an information platform allowed misinformation to spread more widely and rapidly than ever before. This investigation aims to assess the impacts of COVID-19 misinformation in Alaska using a mixed methods approach. …

OBJECTIVES: The COVID-19 pandemic has had devastating worldwide impact but most prominent was its effect on marginalised, underserved and equity-deserving populations. Social media arose as an important platform from which health organisations could rapidly disseminate information to equity-deserving populations about COVID-19 risks and events, provide instructions on how to mitigate those risks, motivate compliance with health directives, address false information, provide the opportunity for engagement and immediate feedback. The objective of this scoping review was to synthesise the academic and grey literature on equity-informed social media risk communication strategies developed during the pandemic. DESIGN: The review followed the Arksey and …

Theses
This project examines the pervasive negative impacts of social media through the lens of 3D abstract motion in Virtual Vortex. While social media offers unparalleled convenience and connectivity, it also brings significant, often hidden, adverse effects on psychosocial health, personal privacy, and relationships. These consequences, although intangible, have profound implications that necessitate deeper scrutiny. In Virtual Vortex, I translate these abstract issues into concrete visuals, using 3D animation to make the invisible visible. By employing Cinema 4D (C4D) dynamics and mograph, I create a narrative where a yellow ball represents individuals, and various forms of social media icons symbolize the …

The U.S. surgeon general named loneliness a top public health issue in the U.S. In response, Utah State University (USU) Extension faculty developed four fact sheets to describe some of the most effective ways to reduce loneliness. This third fact sheet describes both actions and ways of thinking to help you focus on what you can change. These include using social media intentionally, reaching out for support, avoiding unhealthy relationships, focusing on helpful thoughts, adopting a growth mindset, and practicing gratitude.

Shaping Worldviews: Helping High School Seniors Manage The Influence Of Social Media, Geoffrey Michael Janes
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The rapid development of technology in recent decades has brought with it many unforeseen challenges. This project focuses on the challenge of learning to manage the influence social media has on worldviews. Young people are consuming information on social media with little or no instruction on how to discern what is real or true. Worldviews are being shaped by influencers who proclaim ideological messages that are often in conflict with a biblical Christian worldview. As with any tool, social media in the hands of a trained user can be used powerfully for good. Without a proper understanding and awareness of …

Long-haul truck drivers (LHTDs) are an important part of the supply chain in the United States. Their work schedules include holidays, weekends, night shifts, and can last anywhere from 60–70 hours for a single 6- to 8-day run to meet the demands of society. Poor work–life balance, high job demands, and poor sleep quality that can be experienced on the job as an LHTD can negatively affect not only their physical health but also their mental health. Depression, anxiety, and stress are three psychological effects that can develop from an unhealthy lifestyle and inability to maintain any healthcare appointments, despite …
