A Study Of Social Media Integration In Public Emergency Alert Systems, Alexander G. Barnett
A Study Of Social Media Integration In Public Emergency Alert Systems, Alexander G. Barnett
Purdue Polytechnic Masters Theses
To remain effective, modern emergency alert systems must continue to investigate new methods and technologies for contacting the public. Today’s emergency alert systems, which rely primarily on broadcast media, have yet to fully embrace the potential of one category of Internet technologies: Social media. Social media potentially represents a large, untapped audience for emergency alert personnel to not only contact, but also utilize when seeking information regarding an incident. The following paper investigates these technologies and their relevance to the emergency alert field.

Theses and Dissertations
This study examines the relationship between online self-disclosure, grandiose narcissism, vulnerable narcissism, Facebook use and frequency of status updates in existing self-report measures among 381 college students. Positive correlations were found between: vulnerable narcissism and Facebook status updates, and Facebook use and online self-disclosure. Following the equalization of the two different narcissism scales, college students scored higher on grandiose narcissism as opposed to vulnerable narcissism, the opposite to what was hypothesized. No correlations were found between: grandiose narcissism and Facebook status updates; grandiose narcissism and self-disclosure; and vulnerable narcissism and self-disclosure. Additionally, college women did not score higher in self-disclosure …

Social Media For Nonprofits: Analysis And Discussion Of Facebook For Habitat For Humanity San Luis Obispo, Christine Gorney
Journalism
In the past few years, social media has become a key strategy for public relations practitioners. Sites like Facebook have revolutionized online marketing and how businesses and organizations reach their publics. Large nonprofits utilize Facebook to spread their messages and gain supporters and funds, but many small, local nonprofits do not use Facebook to their advantage. Social media has become necessary for businesses and organizations, especially nonprofits, to grow, as well as compete with their competitors. The results of this project demonstrate why nonprofits may not participate in social media, as well as why it is beneficial to implement the …
Abeyance And Spontaneity In Tunisia, Louis Edgar Esparza
Abeyance And Spontaneity In Tunisia, Louis Edgar Esparza
Human Rights & Human Welfare
On August 16, 1819, tens of thousands of workers gathered in what is now St. Peter’s Square in Manchester to demand suffrage. Entire families, parishes, and townships assembled, fueled by increasing commodity prices and political disenfranchisement. They had spread the word from town to town, and from church to church, that this previously banned meeting was indeed to occur. It was the culmination of months of agitation on the part of common people to achieve economic and political reform. The government responded violently to the challenge of its authority, as governments so often do, leading to a score of deaths …
The New Digital [St]Age: Barriers To The Adoption And Adaptation Of New Technologies To Deliver Extension Programming And How To Address Them, Jamie Seger
Journal of Extension
With the rise of social media and the need for statewide program cohesiveness, The Ohio State University Extension has the opportunity to position itself as a catalyst for technology adoption and adaptation nationwide. Unfortunately, many barriers exist to the successful use and implementation of technology, including an organizational structure that does not cater to the short turn-around new technologies demand and ideological generational divides among all who are affected by the organization. In order to allow new technologies to positively affect Extension programming, we must first break through such barriers with a powerful combination of enlightened knowledge and hands-on training.

Human Communication and Theatre Faculty Research
The widespread use of social networking websites (SNSs) is one of the most groundbreaking communication trends to emerge in recent years. Since its creation in 2004, sites such as Facebook have become immensely popular among college students. Many SNSs continue to experience exponential growth. Facebook, for example, reached 100 million active users in August 2008 and proceeded to quadruple this membership base to surpass 400 million active users by July 2010 (Facebook.com). In addition to maintaining astronomically high membership rates, SNSs also appear to be part of user's daily schedules. In one study assessing Facebook use, Ellison, Heino, and Gibbs …

When Bieber Fever Strikes: Using Twitter As A New Medium For Attack And Defense Communication, Samuel Hardman Taylor, Matthew Barton
Iowa Journal of Communication
Rhetorical analyses of image restoration and attack have characteristically centered on public figures because their images are the focal point of news conversation for traditional mass media outlets following events of public shame. Through the development of Web 2.0 technologies and microblogging sites like Twitter, publishing power has shifted the conversation about public figures and their image creation, management and restoration into the hands of the general public. The shift creates new opportunities for research in the field of public discourse, specifically attack and defense rhetoric. This study uses the tweets surrounding Justin Bieber's loss at the 2011 Grammy Awards …

Download This: Artist Development And Interconnectivity In The Internet Age, Geoffrey Johnson
American Studies Senior Theses
The advent of internet media distribution has profoundly changed the way most people consume music and experience artists. Outlets such as Myspace, YouTube, Twitter, and peer-to-peer downloading networks have made music and artists more accessible than ever before. These changes have come largely at the expense of the traditional music industry model of distribution. My thesis proposes that these new media have radically redefined what it means to be a developing artist. Specifically, these media empower artists with the ability to circumvent music industry oversight while providing them with tools of self-promotion to autonomously construct a fan-base. My thesis will …

Watch Out Facebook And The Need To Evaluate, Horace Dawson
Theses & ETDs
Online social media have come to provide an important mode of communication and social interaction among peers, and have also recently proven to be significant forces in the global political scene. A social psychological construct measuring the tendency of individuals to form attitudes known as the need to evaluate is hypothesized to correlate positively with the intensity of individuals use of the social networking website known as Facebook. Information found in the sociological literature leading to this hypothesis includes the evaluative nature of social monitoring and Facebooks use as a tool to carry out this kind of monitoring and socioeconomic …

The use of social networking sites such as Facebook and LinkedIn has dramatically increased in recent years. Today, over 50 percent of teens and 35 percent of adults in the U.S. are using at least one type of social networking site. If used well, these sites can have many personal and professional benefits. Social networking can be a fun way to communicate with others, and an effective way to expand one’s social and professional connections. It is important to practice good judgment and proper “netiquette” when developing personal profiles and interacting with others through such sites. This community program will …

This case study reveals new dimensions of transformative learning occurring through informal learning opportunities. The research results demonstrate that the individual’s learning spans understanding, networking, professional identity development, and transformative learning. Specifically, virtual online communities facilitated through social media provide professional networks and social relationships beyond the scope of the individual’s usual interactions and experience. Discussion and recommendations include using social media and virtual communities as instructional strategies for graduate studies and continued learning beyond formal education. The educational significance includes facilitating transformative learning in informal learning contexts, and using social media and online communities for professional learning.

Regulating Social Media Use In The Workplace, Yemisi Dina
Editorials and Commentaries
The advent of social networking sites (SNS) has become a reality of the digital age. These sites are highly interactive, creative and addictive for individuals to exchange personal, professional and social ideas but its use has also been the subject of litigation in the courts lately just like any man made invention. People using these sites have sparked a number of legal challenges that have dramatically changed the world. This raises a number of questions as to whether there are clear guidelines on the use of these tools by employers and employees.

Incendiary Speech And Social Media, Lyrissa Lidsky

Incidents illustrating the incendiary capacity of social media have rekindled concerns about the "mismatch" between existing doctrinal categories and new types of dangerous speech. This Essay examines two such incidents, one in which an offensive tweet and YouTube video led a hostile audience to riot and murder, and the other in which a blogger urged his nameless, faceless audience to murder federal judges. One incident resulted in liability for the speaker even though no violence occurred; the other did not lead to liability for the speaker even though at least thirty people died as a result of his words. An …

Social media have the potential to revolutionize discourse between American citizens and their governments. At present, however, the U.S. Supreme Court's public forum jurisprudence frustrates rather than fosters that potential. This article navigates the notoriously complex body of public forum doctrine to provide guidance for those who must develop or administer government-sponsored social media or adjudicate First Amendment questions concerning them. Next, the article marks out a new path for public forum doctrine that will allow it to realize the potential of Web 2.0 technologies to enhance democratic discourse between the governors and the governed. Along the way, this article …

Bias In Social And Mainstream Media, Yu-Ru Lin, David Lazer, James P. Bagrow
Working Papers
The extent of media bias determines the information available to the public and can affect public opinion and decision-making. Social media, such as blogs, powered by the growth of the Internet and related technologies, is envisioned as a form of grassroots journalism that blurs the line between producers and consumers and changes how information and opinions are distributed. They are often seen as democratic entities that allow more voices to be heard than the conventional mainstream media as well as a balancing force against the arguably slanted mainstream media.
Do social media exhibit more or less bias than mainstream media …
