Shoutboard : A New Locative Social Network, Evan Havlisch, Ketan Kumar, Tovin Thomas
Computer Science and Engineering Senior Theses
This paper will illustrate the need for a better location based social network that utilizes the latest smartphone features. Over the course of this project, we created ShoutBoard. ShoutBoard is a way for people to share messages with the people geographically close by. We accomplish this by creating a system with a client-server architecture. The user will use the iPhone app or the website to interact with our server. The server will fetch messages that other users have posted and return them to the client. Within this document, we describe in detail the problem we wish to solve, the current …

Anomaly Detection On Social Data, Hanbo Dai
Anomaly Detection On Social Data, Hanbo Dai
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
The advent of online social media including Facebook, Twitter, Flickr and Youtube has drawn massive attention in recent years. These online platforms generate massive data capturing the behavior of multiple types of human actors as they interact with one another and with resources such as pictures, books and videos. Unfortunately, the openness of these platforms often leaves them highly susceptible to abuse by suspicious entities such as spammers. It therefore becomes increasingly important to automatically identify these suspicious entities and eliminate their threats. We call these suspicious entities anomalies in social data, as they often hold different agenda comparing to …

Social Media Assimilation In Firms: Investigating The Roles Of Absorptive Capacity And Institutional Pressures, Pratyush Bharati, Chen Zhang, Abhijit Chaudhury
Management Science and Information Systems Faculty Publication Series
Firms are increasingly employing social media to manage relationships with partner organizations, yet the role of institutional pressures in social media assimilation has not been studied. We investigate social media assimilation in firms using a model that combines the two theoretical streams of IT adoption: organizational innovation and institutional theory. The study uses a composite view of absorptive capacity that includes both previous experience with similar technology and the general ability to learn and exploit new technologies. We find that institutional pressures are an important antecedent to absorptive capacity, an important measure of organizational learning capability. The paper augments theory …
“I Know It When I See It”: Style, Simulation And The ‘Short-Circuit Sign’, Marc A. Ouellette
“I Know It When I See It”: Style, Simulation And The ‘Short-Circuit Sign’, Marc A. Ouellette
English Faculty Publications
The contemporary production of “style” relies heavily on the implementation of the “short-circuit sign” and the relationship of both to the emptiness of fourth-order simulation and to the remediation of successive visual forms. In distinguishing the “short-circuit sign,” film scholar James Monaco highlights the important role of cultural codes in the naturalization and the reification of on-screen images so that signifier and signified become identical, or are perceived as such. It is the cultural codes, then, that distinguish this mode from the establishment of a sign’s iconicity, insofar as the “short-circuit sign” belongs, as it were, to the genre and …

From Scrapbook To Facebook: A History Of Personal Media Assemblage And Archives, Katie Day Good
University Faculty Publications and Creative Works
This study surveys recent research on print-era scrapbooks and contemporary social media to highlight commonalities between the two formats, both in terms of the practices they have historically promoted for users, and the methodological challenges they produce for researchers. It argues that scrapbooks and social media can be conceptualized as sites of personal media assemblage and personal media archives, a designation that highlights the simultaneously social and archival dimensions of each form. After discussing these formal similarities, the author identifies three shared functions: (1) documenting friendship, (2) navigating new media abundance, and (3) communicating taste and building cultural capital. By …

Effect Of Social Media On Crowdfunding Project Results, Alexey Moisseyev
College of Business: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Crowdfunding is a form of collaborative social media. Even though crowdfunding can function without social media, this phenomenon has developed greatly with the advance of social media. The studies in entrepreneurship and finance established connections between startup projects and social ties. However, the impact of social media on crowdfunding is still lightly studied in academic literature.
The purpose of this thesis is to define the influence of social media on crowdfunding. In particular, this research studies the connections between social media assets such as the social media followers and the social media seals of approval and crowdfunding results such as …

Recently, research interest has been growing in the development of online communities sharing news and information curated by “citizen reporters”. Using “Big Data” techniques researchers try to discover influence groups and major events in the lives of such communities. However, the big picture may sometimes miss important stories that are essential to the development and evolution of online communities. In particular, how does one identify and verify events when the important actors are operating anonymously and without sufficient news coverage, as in drug war-torn Mexico? In this paper, we present some techniques that allow us to make sense of the …

The use of social media provides an opportunity for organizations to efficiently and effectively raise awareness about a cause (Waters, Burnett, Lamm, & Lucas, 2009) and build relationships with participants and alumni (Waters & Jamal, 2011), potentially creating a competitive advantage. The purpose of this …

With the advent of social media services, media outlets have started reaching audiences on social-networking sites. On Twitter, users actively follow a wide set of media sources, form interpersonal networks, and propagate interesting stories to their peers. These media subscription and interaction patterns, which had previously been hidden behind media corporations' databases, offer new opportunities to understand media supply and demand on a large scale. Through a map that connects 77 media outlets based on Twitter subscription patterns, we are able to answer a variety of questions: to what extent New York Times and the Wall Street Journal readers overlap? …

Most social networking platforms protect user's private information by limiting access to it to a small group of members, typically friends of the user, while allowing (virtually) everyone's access to the user's public data. In this paper, we exploit public data available on Facebook to infer users' undisclosed interests on their profile pages. In particular, we infer their undisclosed interests from the public data fetched using Graph APIs provided by Facebook. We demonstrate that simply liking a Facebook page does not corroborate that the user is interested in the page. Instead, we perform sentiment-oriented mining on various attributes of a …

Fragmented Social Media: A Look Into Selective Exposure To Political News, Jisun An, Daniele Quercia, Jon Crowcroft
Fragmented Social Media: A Look Into Selective Exposure To Political News, Jisun An, Daniele Quercia, Jon Crowcroft
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
The hypothesis of selective exposure assumes that people crave like-minded information and eschew information that conflicts with their beliefs, and that has negative consequences on political life. Yet, despite decades of research, this hypothesis remains theoretically promising but empirically difficult to test. We look into news articles shared on Facebook and examine whether selective exposure exists or not in social media. We find a concrete evidence for a tendency that users predominantly share like-minded news articles and avoid conflicting ones, and partisans are more likely to do that. Building tools to counter partisanship on social media would require the ability …

Growing up in Marianna, Arkansas, I recall the memories of places that are dear to my heart. Yet, many of these places have either been demolished or sit vacant, leaving only the memories that others and I relive as we pass by. Despite economic downfalls throughout the city’s existence, it has still found a way to press forward. If one takes into account other small towns in the Delta, Marianna, like many others, has continued to decrease in population and job resources. I foresee a technologically-advanced library within the heart of downtown Marianna where people of all agesand backgrounds can …

With the advent of powerful computing devices, ubiquitous connectivity and affordable gadgets, a large amount of research data is produced every day. In the Bagan Mural project, a history professor had taken many photographs of the mural paintings in the temples of Bagan in the course of her field trips. These photographs are simply stored in her computer folders and are therefore not easily searchable or shareable. Ideally, these photographs should be made available online and come with descriptions to provide users with a perspective on the meaning behind the murals. Over one year, NTU librarians collaborated with the professor …

Fordham Intellectual Property, Media and Entertainment Law Journal
This note addresses the challenge of applying intellectual property laws to determining ownership rights over social media accounts, specifically in the employer and employee context. This note suggests that IP regimes, namely Trademark, Copyright, and Trade Secrets, fail to provide an adequate framework for determining such ownership rights. Instead, this note proposes that the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act serves as a more appropriate legal framework.

Portraying Sense Of Community Through Communication: How To Maximize The Benefit Of Social Media For A Community Agency, Julia Walter
Honors Theses
Perceptions of social media networks are changing rapidly. Their purpose, function, effectiveness, and relevance are being widely debated while their global popularity and societal influence escalate. While individuals used the networks to share, manage, and change their personal lives, organizations jumped at the chance to benefit from low-cost public relations, advertising, and market research. Many organizations speedily adjusted their communication strategies to access these low-cost resources. Due to historical marginalization many nonprofit community agencies were slower to integrate this new media costing them the opportunity to compete for audience attention on level with the private industry. Neglecting to integrate these …
