“Every Mother A Missionary”?: The Vlogs Of Mormon Mothers, Celia Golden Apr 2025

“Every Mother A Missionary”?: The Vlogs Of Mormon Mothers, Celia Golden

Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) places high expectations on mothers because their role in the church is to rear children into godly adults. When their lives are made public through social media, Mormon mothers online avoid religious expectations by withholding information about their Mormon faith and scarcely showing their husbands on-camera. Mormon husbands are expected to be the providers for the family, but as demonstrated through mothers’ vlogs on Instagram, husbands’ erasure allows for mothers to market their expertise to others as a paid product to earn their own revenue. Through descriptive coding, this study …

Department of Medical Oncology Faculty Papers

BACKGROUND: While human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination is one of the most effective ways to prevent HPV-related cancers, many children and adolescents remain unvaccinated. Resistance often stems from parental vaccine hesitancy and mistrust of the health care system, both of which may be higher in communities of color. Partnering with social media influencers may be an effective method for disseminating health messages. We tested the impact of HPV social media posts developed by influencers on outcomes of knowledge, attitudes, and intentions to vaccinate.

METHODS: Ten social media influencers who identified as African American or Hispanic created posts about the HPV vaccine. …

Fitspiration And The Prevalence Of Orthorexia Symptomatology In A Male Population, Avery N. Encalade, Jennifer A. Harriger, Janet P. Trammell

Seaver College Research And Scholarly Achievement Symposium

Orthorexia nervosa (ON) is a condition characterized by an unhealthy obsession with eating healthy food, often leading to psychological impairment (Oberle & Lipschuetz, 2018). Fitspiration is a social media trend that has gained popularity in recent years, showcasing idealized physiques and promoting rigid dietary practices along with intense exercise in pursuit of health. Using Thompson et al.'s (1999) Tripartite Influence Model of the Sociocultural Theory as a framework, the researchers hypothesized that increased viewership of fitspiration content would be associated with higher orthorexia symptomatology and would be moderated by the internalization of sociocultural ideals and physical appearance comparisons. Participants included …

Fertilizer For Independent Terrorism: Social Media's Facilitation Of Radicalization, Mary Moody, Rachel Stark Apr 2025

Fertilizer For Independent Terrorism: Social Media's Facilitation Of Radicalization, Mary Moody, Rachel Stark

FHSS Mentored Research Conference

Does social media play a role in the radicalization of independent terrorists? We theorize that, while neither necessary nor sufficient, social media facilitates the radicalization of independent terrorists due to its low barrier of entry, allowing individuals around the world to have access to and create echo chambers around radical ideologies, reinforcing their political identities. To test this theory, we conducted a mixed-methods analysis, running statistical tests on the PIRUS database and executing a most-different qualitative comparative design. We find that social media is more involved in independent rather than traditional terrorist radicalization, establishing the causal pathway in case studies.

The Impact Of Social Media On Political Polarization, Emaad Khan Apr 2025

The Impact Of Social Media On Political Polarization, Emaad Khan

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2020 - Present

Inspired by the events observed in the media pertaining to the Israel-Palestine conflict, my thesis examines whether social media contributes to political polarization through algorithms that create echo chambers, misinformation, and emotionally charged content. I argue that selective social media exposure fosters political polarization as social media users often encounter content that reinforces their pre-existing beliefs, leading to a reluctance in considering alternative viewpoints. Furthermore, the passionate nature of discussions on social media about the Israel-Palestine conflict contributes to polarization, aligning with negative contact theory, which suggests that social and ideological differences can hinder productive conversation and understanding of one …

This paper reviews the qualitative findings from a study aimed at assessing influencers' perceptions of and approaches to sharing messaging about the HPV vaccine.

METHODS: Guided by several theories (Theory of Planned Behavior, Narrative Theory, and Opinion Leader Theory), the study team …

International Journal of Cybersecurity Intelligence & Cybercrime

There has been growing attention to the role of the decision-making process in crime involvement in recent years. However, less is known about the association between the decision-making process and adolescents’ online offending. The present study examined whether thoughtfully reflective decision-making (TRDM) and cyber victimization are related to adolescents’ cybercrime. Data were obtained from self-report questionnaires administered to 510 Israeli adolescents aged 13-20. The results indicate that TRDM is negatively associated with engagement in online offending. Furthermore, cyber victimization is significantly associated with online offending. In addition, a significant predictor of online offending is intense activity on social media. We …

Another unavoidable aspect of the internet is social media; it is used for communication, news gathering, and engaging in discussion, inter alia. Delulu Is The Solulu: The Role Of Social Media In The Spread Of Misinformation About Autism Spectrum Disorder, Shelby L. Collett

Honors Theses

Social media has become a platform many use to connect with others and to learn and spread new information. However, concerns have been raised regarding the general population’s media literacy skills. These concerns have only grown as more and more people use social media to share information about mental and neurodevelopmental disorders that may not be entirely true. As misinformation regarding mental disorders has grown, as has self-diagnosis rates, particularly for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Little research exists on how adept college students are at discerning between accurate and inaccurate information, especially when it comes to ASD. The purpose of …

Our results show three significant instances that influence the odds of monitoring a romantic partner: (1) past experiences with digital abuse, (2) past experiences with offline psychological abuse, and (3) age, with younger women having increased odds of engaging in digital monitoring compared to older women. …

The New Antebellum: A Sociological Interpretation Of Christian Nationalism And Its Danger To Both Christianity And American Democracy, Paige R. Dickerman

Richard T. Schellhase Essay Prize in Ethics

Hate and fear have become the new American identity, plaguing social media platforms and legislation as it drips from the mouths of the citizenry. The nation has been torn apart by polarization in a continuation of the division and extremist ideology that has tormented generations of Americans since its founding. Today, Christian nationalism is at the forefront of division and extremism in its idea of a new America, defined by traditionalism, biblical law, and an end to our taken-for-granted democratic processes. Its proponents insist that America’s survival depends on Christian laws and national observance, a claim that hides the truth …
