Of Reasonable Readers And Unreasonable Speakers: Libel Law In A Networked World, Lyrissa Barnett Lidsky, Ronnell Andersen Jones

UF Law Faculty Publications

Social-media libel cases require courts to map existing defamation doctrines onto social-media fact patterns in ways that create adequate breathing space for expression without licensing character assassination. This Article explores these challenges by investigating developments involving two important constitutional doctrines-the so-called opinion privilege, which protects statements that are unverifiable or cannot be regarded as stating actual facts about a person, and the actual malice rule, which requires defamation plaintiffs who are public officials or public figures to prove that the defendant made a defamatory statement with knowledge of or reckless disregard for, its falsity. Given the critical role these two …

Buying Love Through Social Media: How Different Types Of Incentives Impact Consumers’ Online Sharing Behavior, Yueming Zou

Marketing Theses & Dissertations

A key issue in social media marketing is insufficient consumer participation and engagement. Oftentimes companies have to devise tactics to encourage more social sharing of brand messages, such as through the use of incentives and rewards. Previous research has investigated incentive effects under the traditional offline context, which addresses mostly economic exchanges and fails to consider the social dynamics of the social media environment. Addressing this gap, this research aims to answer the following research question: how can companies target different consumers with different incentives to maximize consumer sharing through social media? Specifically, the present research proposes three factors that …

Maximizing The Impact Of Your Publications In An Open Access Environment, Peter Griffiths

Biennial Convention (CONV)

The pressure on nursing scholars to publish their research findings has never been greater. Publications bring scholars and their employing institutions recognition, raise the likelihood of further research funding and are the pathway to a successful academic career. However, publishing practices and the publishing environment are changing. Whereas frequency of publication was once the main criterion for academic success (Norman & Griffiths 2008) the emphasis today is on producing fewer papers, but ones that are highly used and cited and published in high impact journals. Added to this the long and sometimes heated debate about the merits or otherwise of …

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Abstract

The creativity, collaboration, and advanced communication afforded by the use of social media also opens privacy and safety concerns for potential users inside and outside the realm of higher education. As the promise of the positives afforded by weaving social media into the fabric of higher education has been realized, so too have concerns over how this “social network” is governed and managed at colleges and universities. News stories, predominately negative in nature, have highlighted the unprofessional conduct of college and university employees and the issues surrounding the implementation of social media policies at institutions of higher education. Consequently, …

This paper reviews the literature on altmetric tools, identifies the existing tools, as well as pros and cons of using those tools. The author investigates how the tools can be …

Political Messaging On Social Media: Facebook Campaigning And Political Silos, Morgan Williams, Jeremy C. Pope Feb 2016

Political Messaging On Social Media: Facebook Campaigning And Political Silos, Morgan Williams, Jeremy C. Pope

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The make-up of political campaigns has transformed with the creation of the internet. What used to be a world of door to door canvassing and mass produced mailers sent to party members is now a world of entertaining YouTube videos and Facebook likes. It is no longer easy to gather and track the political advertisements that people are exposed to, because they come from so many different sources. It used to be that if you were a Republican, it would be likely you would only be exposed to Republican messaging with the same pattern reflected in the Democratic Party. This …

Encouraging Ethical Behavior In The Workplace By Way Of The Classroom: Examining The Use Of Social Media In Marketing Ethics Instruction To Influence Millennials‘ Perception Of Workplace Ethics, Traci Thomas Pierce

Doctor of Business Administration (DBA)

An emphasis on marketing ethics instruction in higher education may be needed now more than ever. The Ethics Resource Center (ERC) reports that employees of the millennial generation are less cognizant of unethical practices in the workplace than previous generations, and suggests that the millennials' exposure and frequency to social media contributes to their disregard of unethical workplace behavior (―2011 National Business Ethics Survey,‖ 2012). Social media communication is popular among the millennial generation and is a requirement for modern-day businesses; yet, the nature of social media seems to be affecting this new generation of employees negatively. Could social media …

Incitement, Threats, And Constitutional Guarantees: First Amendment Protections Pre- And Post-Elonis, Mark Strasser

The University of New Hampshire Law Review

[Excerpt] "While the First Amendment to the United States Constitution protects the freedom of expression, individuals issuing threats or advocating illegal conduct may be subject to punishment. What constitutes proscribable speech has long been evolving, and the recent jurisprudence suggests that First Amendment protections are more robust for advocacy of illegal conduct than for threats. Elonis v. United States provided the Court with a golden opportunity to clarify First Amendment threat jurisprudence; however, those hoping for an illuminating analysis cannot help but be disappointed. Part I of this Article discusses the developing First Amendment jurisprudence regarding the regulation of incitement, …
