Chinese Indonesians After May 1998 How They Fit In The Big Picture, Dewi Anggraeni
Chinese Indonesians After May 1998 How They Fit In The Big Picture, Dewi Anggraeni
Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia
For Chinese Indonesians, May 1998 is a significant historical marker, twelfth and thirteenth being two concentrated days of riots and atrocities in Jakarta, followed by more, albeit on smaller scales, in Solo, Surabaya, and a number of other cities. Destruction of properties belonging to them, and rapes of their women, occurred. Then Indonesia witnessed the end of Suharto's rule when the president resigned on 21 May 1998. A gradual political turn-around followed; Chinese Indonesians found room to move. The subsequent governments revoked restrictive regulations put in place by the New Order government, and lifted the suppression on cultural expression by …
Terf Wars: Narrative Productions Of Gender And Essentialism In Radical-Feminist (Cyber)Spaces, Jennifer Earles
Terf Wars: Narrative Productions Of Gender And Essentialism In Radical-Feminist (Cyber)Spaces, Jennifer Earles
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation concerns how activists preserve particular feminisms in everyday life, particularly in this postmodern moment as advances in technology create virtual spaces, as feminism experiences generational shifts, and as notions about gender and bodies influence the discursive and political construction of contemporary activism and communities. The particular feminists at the center of this study are self-described radical feminists. While original theories allowed members to question the essentialism of bodies (i.e., sex class), this study focuses on the movement trajectory in which members critique how people assigned male at birth learn masculinity as inextricably tied to the oppression of women …

How Gigging Musicians Utilize Social Media, Arika D. Michaelis
How Gigging Musicians Utilize Social Media, Arika D. Michaelis
COLA Research and Creativity Conference
Gigging musicians will exhaust their resources to get more audience members and music lovers at their show and active on their social media outlets. I will be conducting a survey in the Tri-State area to discover how local gigging musicians utilize social media to promote themselves and their shows. I hope to uncover what varying local musicians have found most useful in the age of social media. In doing so, local musicians and gigging musicians in smaller music scenes across the United States will be able to benefit in their promotions from my study.
The Use Of Social Media By Contemporary Witchcraft Communities, Michael J. Haverty
The Use Of Social Media By Contemporary Witchcraft Communities, Michael J. Haverty
COLA Research and Creativity Conference
This event will be a summarization of the theory and findings of my research project that looks at how self-identifying witches use social media. Witchcraft users have historically adapted to the changes in society like all other peoples. Witchcraft users have also historically only had contact with others of their spiritual practices during yearly gathering events or local covens. However, social media has created platforms for people from minority subcultures to interact in ways that were formerly limited. By digitally surveying and interviewing users of the social media platform Tumblr who self-identify as witches, this project attempts to look at …
Communication Technology Use On Family Interaction And Relationships, Michelle Perrotta
Communication Technology Use On Family Interaction And Relationships, Michelle Perrotta
Academic Festival
In our current society, are people deeming themselves “too busy” to be able to have face to face interactions? Instead, is it a new norm to decide to have more of a relationship with one’s phone, social media, etc. and to work more towards keeping a connection with technology than to connect with members of one’s family at home? A cross-sectional survey was conducted to test whether a correlation exists between use of communication technology and family interaction. The hypothesis of this study is that as communication technology use increases, there is a significant decrease in interaction with family members. …

Brief Report: Young Adult Women, Sexting, And Risky Sexual Behaviors, Claire Kimberly, Amanda Williams, Devin Drawdy, Christopher Cruz
Journal of Health Disparities Research and Practice
The present study explored associations between sexually explicit text messaging (sexting), social media use, and engagement in risky sexual behaviors among young adult women to determine whether online sexting and social media activity was associated with real-world sexual behaviors. Participants completed a self-administered anonymous, online survey that included 66 questions assessing demographic information, use of technology, sexting activity, and sexual behaviors. A greater proportion of participants reported sexting than in previous studies and results indicate sexting is used to maintain intimate relationships online. Results also suggest that, for young women, social media and sexting facilitate alternative intimate communication, without physical …
The Tipping Point: A Case Study Of The Bernie Sanders Movement And Hashtag Activism In The Postmodern Public Relations Perspective, Alissa Sommerfeldt
The Tipping Point: A Case Study Of The Bernie Sanders Movement And Hashtag Activism In The Postmodern Public Relations Perspective, Alissa Sommerfeldt
Steeplechase: An ORCA Student Journal
Within the field of public relations, professionals utilize case study methodology to research efficient public relations tactics and strategies. Specifically, a public relations case study is an-depth qualitative analysis of a particular public relations campaign performed by an organization, providing a vital tool for public relations scholars to study complex phenomena within their contexts (Baxter, 2008, p. 2).
This particular case study will be examining public relations in a deeper sense than the traditional view of public relations merely serving as a relationship management role within an organization. Instead, public relations activism as a demonstration of the postmodernist worldview will …
The Effect Of The Perceived Social Acceptance And The Perceived Social Worth Of A Brand Content Marketing, Hyeong-Gyu Choi
The Effect Of The Perceived Social Acceptance And The Perceived Social Worth Of A Brand Content Marketing, Hyeong-Gyu Choi
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
The aim of this dissertation is to examine the effects of perceived social acceptance--an individual's perception that he/she is included and valued in his/her social groups and relationships--and perceived social worth--the value that an individual ascribes to him/herself and others--on individual evaluations--intentions to continue content sharing, self-esteem, and attitude toward the brand. The content used for this investigation is Social Networking Sites (SNSs).The author postulates that SNSs users evaluate their virtual standing by observing audience interactions and assign differential "value" (i.e., social worth) to others and even brands whereby those weighted values affect SNSs users' individual evaluations. It is thus …
Trending Now: The Role Of Defamation Law In Remedying Harm From Social Media Backlash, Cory Batza
Trending Now: The Role Of Defamation Law In Remedying Harm From Social Media Backlash, Cory Batza
Pepperdine Law Review
Defamatory comments on social media have become commonplace. When the online community is outraged by some event, social media users often flood the Internet with hateful and false comments about the alleged perpetrator, feeling empowered by their numbers and anonymity. This wave of false and harmful information about an individual’s reputation has caused many individuals to lose their jobs and suffer severe emotional trauma. This Comment explores whether the target of social media backlash can bring a successful defamation claim against the users who have destroyed their reputations on and offline. Notably, one of the biggest hurdles these plaintiffs will …
The Market Value Of Who We Are: The Flow Of Personal Data And Its Regulation In China, Dong Han
The Market Value Of Who We Are: The Flow Of Personal Data And Its Regulation In China, Dong Han
Articles
This article focuses on market-driven collection of personal data and its regulation in China. It argues that there is a growing demand for personal data from China’s advertising, marketing, and credit reporting businesses. Meanwhile, the rapid development of the Internet, notably social media and e-commerce, has generated very large pools of personal data on digital platforms. These two factors contribute to the fast growth of both legitimate and illegitimate collection and exploitation of personal information. Chinese laws and regulations lag behind the market and are not ready to regulate personal data as a key economic resource. They scatter in a …

@The_New_House: An Online-Offline Manifesto, Ana Paola Hernandez Derbez, Domenica Velasco
Architecture Senior Theses
The house, is one of the most fundamental architectural archetypes, has long been used as unbuilt or built manifestos to declare the avant-garde of the discipline. As designers, we need to re-visualize design concepts to create architecture that integrates and corresponds to the way we dwell. Innovating design in the same way technology and digitalization have been innovating production and the way we live. This thesis investigates a return to the design of a house as a manifesto, focusing on today’s advanced modes of fabrication and evolving ways of living to challenge the current design mindset.

Straight From The Horse's Mouth: An Examination Of Social Media Usage And Advertising Methodologies In The Sale Of Sporthorses, Michael Willham
Undergraduate Distinction Papers
This study discovered general market conditions as well as buyer and seller behavior in the sporthorse market for the disciplines of Dressage, Show Jumping, and Eventing. The efficient sale of sporthorses in these disciplines is equally as important of a consideration as the marketing and advertising decisions for any other product such as automobiles or electronics. Equids differ from regular products in that they typically have markedly higher inventory costs associated with the maintenance of holding onto a live animal. Therefore, it is arguably more imperative for businesses to determine the quickest and most efficient means to sell them. This …

As the EdTechLN's experimentation with Twitter chats has demonstrated, the use of this technology can be a worthwhile method of engagement if suitable for the intended audience.
The Dynamics Of Social Media Interaction In A Free-Choice Religious Education Experience, Scott C. Woodward
The Dynamics Of Social Media Interaction In A Free-Choice Religious Education Experience, Scott C. Woodward
Theses and Dissertations
This Grounded Theory study explores how the use of social media influenced the dynamics of interaction in a free-choice religious education experience between a world religious leader and young adult learners. Results indicate that social media (a) enhanced proxy group interaction due to the increased visibility of leader-learner interactions to the entire group and the ability of learners to comment on, like, mention other learners, and share leader-learner interactions; (b) enabled active non-verbal interaction which allowed for social curation, peer validation, community reaction, and the non-verbal pushing of posts into the social media streams of those not participating in the …

Measuring The Popular Resonance Of Daesh’S Propaganda, William M. Marcellino, Kim Cragin, Joshua Mendelsohn, Andrew Micahel Cady, Madeline Magnuson, Kathleen Reedy
Journal of Strategic Security
We describe an innovative approach to social media analysis, combining corpus linguists and statistical methods to measure the resonance of Daesh's propaganda to a sample population (Eqypt). The findings from this research effort demonstrate that: (1) Daesh's messaging is measurable and distinct from other Salafi groups, such as the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood; (2) while Daesh’s messaging generally do not resonate with Egyptians, its uptake increased in Upper Egypt and the Sinai regions during 2014; and (3) this method can be applied more broadly to measure the spread of violent extremist messaging across regional populations over time.
A Practical Method For Collecting Social Media Campaign Metrics, Laurie W. Gharis, Mary F. Hightower
A Practical Method For Collecting Social Media Campaign Metrics, Laurie W. Gharis, Mary F. Hightower
Journal of Extension
Today's Extension professionals are tasked with more work and fewer resources. Integrating social media campaigns into outreach efforts can be an efficient way to meet work demands. If resources go toward social media, a practical method for collecting metrics is needed. Collecting metrics adds one more task to the workloads of Extension professionals and their partners. Can metrics be collected in an efficient and effective long-term manner even when partners are involved? We propose a practical method for collecting social media communication campaign metrics that is easy to implement and allows for measuring engagement of users over time.
Modeling Topics And Behavior Of Microbloggers: An Integrated Approach, Tuan Anh Hoang, Ee-Peng Lim
Modeling Topics And Behavior Of Microbloggers: An Integrated Approach, Tuan Anh Hoang, Ee-Peng Lim
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Microblogging encompasses both user-generated content and behavior. When modeling microblogging data, one has to consider personal and background topics, as well as how these topics generate the observed content and behavior. In this article, we propose the Generalized Behavior-Topic (GBT) model for simultaneously modeling background topics and users' topical interest in microblogging data. GBT considers multiple topical communities (or realms) with different background topical interests while learning the personal topics of each user and the user's dependence on realms to generate both content and behavior. This differentiates GBT from other previous works that consider either one realm only or content …

The aim of this study was to determine the perceptions higher education faculty members and administrators have on the use of social media, whether academic freedom applies to social media, and the legal protections of academic freedom on social media. A quantitative survey and semi-structured interviews were employed to gather descriptive data about perceptions from a mixed group of higher education faculty and administrators. Chi square analysis was used to determine significance of constructs. Results from this survey indicate that administrators are more likely to use social media personally and professionally, while faculty members are more likely to believe the …

How Many #Followers Do You Have?: Evaluating The Rise Of Social Media And Issues Concerning In Re Ctli’S Determination That Social Media Accounts Are Property Of The Estate, Patricia A. Leeson
Catholic University Law Review
With the rise of social media use, legal disputes have surfaced with litigants looking to the courts to determine issues of ownership and legal authority. As a matter of first impression, a U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Texas held that a Twitter and Facebook social media account were to be regarded as property of the estate pursuant to Section 541 of the Bankruptcy Code. The court analogized the social media accounts to subscriber lists because they provide valuable access to customers. Although the court addressed the question of whether social media applications are to be regarded as property in bankruptcy proceedings, …
