Social Media Collaboration: A Case Study From The University Of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, Sarah Christensen, Jaena Manson, Leah Dudak
Social Media Collaboration: A Case Study From The University Of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, Sarah Christensen, Jaena Manson, Leah Dudak
JLAMS
Large academic libraries with a decentralized structure can lead to individual library units creating and maintaining their own social media accounts with little standardization or cohesiveness across the library system. As a result, social media account owners often duplicate efforts, overwhelming patrons with communication channels, and lacking a consistent message. At the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (U of I), for example, the library system comprises nearly thirty separate library units, and maintains nearly eighty social media accounts. These accounts are spread across platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, Tumblr, YouTube, and Flickr, as well as a plethora of blogs. …
Detecting User Demographics In Twitter To Inform Health Trends In Social Media, Christopher R. Markson
Detecting User Demographics In Twitter To Inform Health Trends In Social Media, Christopher R. Markson
Dissertations
The widespread and popular use of social media and social networking applications offer a promising opportunity for gaining knowledge and insights regarding population health conditions thanks to the diversity and abundance of online user-generated information (UGHI) relating to healthcare and well-being. However, users on social media and social networking sites often do not supply their complete demographic information, which greatly undermines the value of the aforementioned information for health 2.0 research, e.g., for discerning disparities across population groups in certain health conditions. To recover the missing user demographic information, existing methods observe a limited scope of user behaviors, such as …
Igeneration Students' Approach To Technology As A Learning Tool, With An Affinity For Social Media Technology, André S. Dyer
Igeneration Students' Approach To Technology As A Learning Tool, With An Affinity For Social Media Technology, André S. Dyer
CUP Ed.D. Dissertations
The purpose of this survey design study, with a qualitative follow-up component of teachers’ perspectives, was to determine if educators’ assumptions about iGeneration students’ use of technology reflects the students’ actual behaviors when using technology inside and outside the classroom. The literature review highlighted relevant assumptions in regard to behaviors of the iGeneration students and their attitude towards technology from a holistic point of view. A survey design study was conducted to identify the interaction effect between teachers and students with consideration to different teaching approaches and delivery of content as use of educational technology per teacher differs. The methods …
College Students And Online Political Expression During The 2016 Election, Kenneth W. Moffett, Laurie L. Rice
College Students And Online Political Expression During The 2016 Election, Kenneth W. Moffett, Laurie L. Rice
SIUE Faculty Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity
While college students traditionally exhibit low levels of political participation and interest in politics, they are more likely to engage in some forms of political expression than their elders. Their greater familiarity with online forms of political expression and engagement potentially lowers their barriers for political involvement. In turn, this potentially draws more young adults into the political process. We compare the precursors of expressive forms of online political engagement to those of talking to someone offline and trying to persuade them to vote for or against a candidate or party among college students. We find that both activities are …
Reconceptualizing The Work Of A Content Provider For An Online Audience: A Case Study For How Pedagogical Strategies Can Provide Models Of Engagement For Producers Of Entertainment, Diane Cooke
English Theses & Dissertations
With the interconnectivity of the Internet, and the availability of affordable media compositional tools, the proliferation of online media continues to grow exponentially. However, each day is still comprised of a fixed 24 hours, with far fewer hours spent in active media consumption. Considering the global potential for content to be found (Moreville), discovered (Cormier) or spread (Jenkins), content providers are looking for ways to attract, cultivate and hopefully expand their audiences amid all this digital clutter. In the field of entertainment, this challenge is complicated when small content providers are not aligned with an online, curated network such as …

Demographics Of News Sharing In The U.S. Twittersphere, Julio C.S. Reis, Haewoon Kwak, Jisun An, Johnnatan Messias, Benevenuto Fabrıcio.
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
The widespread adoption and dissemination of online news through social media systems have been revolutionizing many segments of our society and ultimately our daily lives. In these systems, users can play a central role as they share content to their friends. Despite that, little is known about news spreaders in social media. In this paper, we provide the first of its kind in-depth characterization of news spreaders in social media. In particular, we investigate their demographics, what kind of content they share, and the audience they reach. Among our main findings, we show that males and white users tend to …
Zika Virus Communication Preferences Of Pregnant Women: Beyond The Verbal, Mallory Ellingson, Allison T. Chamberlain
Zika Virus Communication Preferences Of Pregnant Women: Beyond The Verbal, Mallory Ellingson, Allison T. Chamberlain
Journal of the Georgia Public Health Association
Background: Pregnant women are frequently a priority group during public health emergencies, including the current Zika virus outbreak. These women turn to prenatal care providers for health information, but providers may not have the time for discussions with every patient. Knowing alternative ways to communicate key Zika-related information to pregnant women is important.
Methods: To determine pregnant women’s preferences for obtaining Zika information from their prenatal providers, a 27-item survey was administered to 408 pregnant women at four prenatal care clinics in Atlanta between May 5th, 2016 and June 20th, 2016. The anonymous survey evaluated women’s preferences for receiving information …
A Domain Based Approach To Social Relation Recognition, Qianru Sun, Bernt Schiele, Mario Fritz
A Domain Based Approach To Social Relation Recognition, Qianru Sun, Bernt Schiele, Mario Fritz
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Social relations are the foundation of human daily life. Developing techniques to analyze such relations from visual data bears great potential to build machines that better understand us and are capable of interacting with us at a social level. Previous investigations have remained partial due to the overwhelming diversity and complexity of the topic and consequently have only focused on a handful of social relations. In this paper, we argue that the domain-based theory from social psychology is a great starting point to systematically approach this problem. The theory provides coverage of all aspects of social relations and equally is …

The Choose H2o Challenge #Ich2oose: Piloting A Health Communication Campaign To Encourage Teens In Rural New Mexico To Drink More Water, Emily A. Lilo
Communication ETDs
This dissertation explains the process of designing, implementing, and evaluating a two-tiered health campaign on social media and in a rural New Mexico high school. The Choose H2O Challenge was an 8-week contest to engage youth in examining their beverage consumption habits, to increase awareness about the health risks of sugary beverages, the benefits of water, and the influence of beverage marketing on their choices. The goals were to change the culture of beverage consumption at the school by making it fun to drink more water, and to encourage teens to become health messengers to their families and friends. This …
Transitioning Business-To-Business Marketing Communications To Social Media, Terri S. Gibson
Transitioning Business-To-Business Marketing Communications To Social Media, Terri S. Gibson
Master of Arts in Media and Communication Plan II Graduate Projects
There has been a movement toward digital media marketing channels away from the traditional media marketing channels in the realm of business-to-business (B2B) marketing. This transformation is more than mere semantics. It reflects the recent integration of digital strategies including blogging, social media, and email marketing by B2B marketers. A greater commitment to driving return on investment (ROI) and tracking movement through a website is seen in these strategies. In the rapidly changing digital landscape of B2B marketing, there is a focused emphasis on analytics, which reveals a sharp contrast between traditional media channels and social networking. With traditional media, …

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
Being in a different country, far away from home, surrounded by strangers that speak a different language than your mother tongue is daunting. Most international students often feel out of place when they arrive in America for the first time. What can we do to change international students’ perspective of Bowling Green from one of being a “boring, small town” to a vibrant growing community? This project will use social media platform like Facebook to promote restaurants and other attractions. Users can write reviews of restaurants, shops, and places to visit in Bowling Green. By including the hashtag #ReviewBowlingGreen on …

What Motivates Young Adults To Talk About Physical Activity On Social Network Sites?, Ni Zhang, Shelly Campo, Jingzhen Yang, Petya Eckler, Linda Snetselaar, Kathleen Janz, Emily Leary
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
Background:
Electronic word-of-mouth on social network sites has been used successfully in marketing. In social marketing, electronic word-of-mouth about products as health behaviors has the potential to be more effective and reach more young adults than health education through traditional mass media. However, little is known about what motivates people to actively initiate electronic word-of-mouth about health behaviors on their personal pages or profiles on social network sites, thus potentially reaching all their contacts on those sites.
Objective:
This study filled the gap by applying a marketing theoretical model to explore the factors associated with electronic word-of-mouth on social network …
Empowering The Minority, Jason Murray, Steve Thomsen
Empowering The Minority, Jason Murray, Steve Thomsen
Journal of Undergraduate Research
We are entering an age where the influence of social media is inevitable. Some activists are opposing it, but others are embracing social media and allowing it to promote their way of life. Minority groups often face cultural transmission and language issues from generation to generation.
Through this project, not only did we learn more about minority groups in New Zealand, but also documented inspiring stories and first-hand accounts published in the news and shared globally via social media. The goal was not just research, but to facilitate and tell inspiring stories through visual mediums.

Narrative In Police Communication: The Art Of Influence And Communication For The Modern Police Organization, Chelsea Fray
Theses and Dissertations
Violence in the City of Rockford, Illinois and surrounding cities has made the Rockford Police Department’s communication vitally important for shaping the future of the community. The primary objective of this project was to gain a greater understanding of how the local police department utilizes one particular communication channel: social media. While some research examining law enforcement’s use of social media exists, this study is unique as it specifically applies Fisher’s (1984) narrative paradigm and key concepts related to public relations functions including relationship building. The analysis revealed that the department does utilize some narrative concepts, but could certainly reevaluate …
Can Facebook Aid Sustainability? An Investigation Of Empathy Expression Within The Humans Of New York Blog, Hannah Wheeler, Courtney Quinn
Can Facebook Aid Sustainability? An Investigation Of Empathy Expression Within The Humans Of New York Blog, Hannah Wheeler, Courtney Quinn
Earth and Environmental Sciences Publications
This qualitative study offers a novel exploration of the links between social media, virtual intergroup contact, and empathy by examining how empathy is expressed through interactions on a popular social media blog. Global leaders are encouraging individuals to engage in behaviors and support policies that provide basic social foundations. It is difficult to motivate people to undertake such actions. However, research shows that empathy intensifies motivation to help others. It can cause individuals to see the world from the perspective of stigmatized group members and increase positive feelings. Social media offers a new pathway for virtual intergroup contact, providing opportunities …

Arabella’S Valentines And Literary Connections [Dot] Com: Playing With Eighteenth-Century Gender Online, Melanie D. Holm
ABO: Interactive Journal for Women in the Arts, 1640–1830
This article describes two digital assignments that ask students to imaginatively embody characters from eighteenth-century texts written by women in order to cultivate a greater awareness of the critical role of gender and gender critique in these works. The first of these assignments, “Arabella’s Valentines,” asks students to translate dialogue from Charlotte Lennox’s The Female Quixote as humorous Internet memes. The second assignment, “Literary Connections [dot] com,” asks students to imagine how characters from the course archive might represent themselves on an internet dating site. Through creative role-play facilitated by these digital genres, students engage with the texts in stimulating …
The Influence Of Social Media On Teens' Self-Esteem, Shannon Murphy Gallagher
The Influence Of Social Media On Teens' Self-Esteem, Shannon Murphy Gallagher
Theses and Dissertations
Social media has made it incredibly easy to connect the world. One can check Twitter and see what their favorite celebrity is up to, log onto Facebook to find out when a friend's birthday is, or use Instagram to advertise a new business. However, is social media doing more harm than good? The purpose of this study was to conclude if there is a relationship between social media and self-esteem, especially among teenagers. 130 participants from two high schools completed two different surveys: one to assess their social media use and the second to measure their self-esteem. Each social media …
Examining The Impact Of Electronic Word-Of-Mouth On Consumer Responses Toward Company: An Alignment-Social Influence Model, Zifei Chen
Open Access Dissertations
To address the growing demand to understand the impact of consumer advocacy and stakeholder behavior in public relations research and practices, this dissertation examined the impact of electronic word-of-mouth (eWOM) on consumer responses. It fills the extant eWOM research gap by addressing consumers’ prior informational and attitudinal base before exposure to eWOM, and anticipated interaction (i.e., lurking and posting behavior) powered by the dynamic, interactive nature of social media. A consolidated Alignment-Social Influence (ASI) model was proposed drawing on interdisciplinary insights from public relations, marketing, consumer behavior, and psychology. Two central research questions were answered through an empirical test of …
A Political Ecology Of Information: Media And The Dilemma Of State Power In China, Michael L. Miller
A Political Ecology Of Information: Media And The Dilemma Of State Power In China, Michael L. Miller
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
In this dissertation, I employ a Weberian concept of social power in order to theorize the challenges posed by, and the varieties of state response to, the dilemma of state power: the need of all states to empower societies with social capacities that may, in turn, threaten state interests. Through a comparison of traditional and new forms of media in China, I show that rather than posing qualitatively new types of challenges to authoritarian states, new media exacerbate the dilemma of state power. They do so because along each of three dimensions of social control, new media shift the relationship …
How Social Media Is Perceived To Affect Romantic Relationship Satisfaction, Hannah S. Shockley
How Social Media Is Perceived To Affect Romantic Relationship Satisfaction, Hannah S. Shockley
Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal
This research discusses the perceived effects of social media on relationship satisfaction. It was hypothesized that social media is perceived to affect romantic relationships in a negative way, especially in the form of jealousy and mistrust, with increased usage. Past research about monitoring romantic partners on social media, the fear of missing out in relation of social media, social media addiction, and mental and psychological effects of social media were explored in relation to the research being presented. Participants took an online survey through Qualtrics which resulted in statistically significant data that partially supported the hypothesis. The perceived effects of …
Confessional Technologies Of The Self: From Seneca To Social Media, Norm Friesen
Confessional Technologies Of The Self: From Seneca To Social Media, Norm Friesen
Educational Technology Faculty Publications and Presentations
Foucault’s general notion of “technologies of the self” provides an invaluable starting point for investigating a range of broadly “confessional” practices and technologies over time — from medieval confession to contemporary forms of networked identity construction. Foucault defines technologies of the self as “reflected and voluntary practices by which men not only fix rules of conduct for themselves but seek to transform themselves, to change themselves in their particular being, and to make their life an oeuvre.” These are practices or techniques, in other words, that are both undertaken by the self and directed toward it. Specifically confessional technologies …

The Minimized Face Of Internal Communication: An Exploration Of How Public Relations Agency Websites Frame Internal Communication And Its Connection To Social Media, Abbey Levenshus, Laura Lemon
Scholarship and Professional Work - Communication
Internal communication is increasingly vital to organizational success due to the influence of social media, yet it remains understudied within public relations research. Using a qualitative content analysis of 181 websites, this study examines how leading public relations agency websites frame the value of internal communication and its connection to social media. Findings reveal internal communication is largely missing from the frame. When explicitly referenced, it is mostly framed as synonymous with employee communication as a means for management to communicate to employees, though some portrayals are more robust. Websites frame internal communication’s value as enhancing financial outcomes by improving …

Social Media And The Voice Of The Department, Brittany N. Rios
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
More law enforcement agencies are adopting social media as a progressive policing strategy each year. They utilize it for several reasons including, community outreach and engagement, public relations, notifying the public of safety concerns, recruitment, intelligence gathering for investigations, among other uses (IACP, 2017). This study explores Southern California Law Enforcements’ use of social media through a survey and content analysis. First, the survey results suggest that more than 93% of departments surveyed concentrate on community outreach through their social media channels. Second, the content analysis results suggest that when media (pictures/video), links, and hashtags (#), are included in posts …

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education
In the winter of 2015, the Columbus Museum of Art (CMA) co-curated an exhibition with the loose-knit mobile photography collective known as JJ Community. #MobilePhotoNow included images created in response to a series of prompts and shared on the photo sharing and social networking application Instagram®. The exhibition reflected a community-based curatorial practice (Keys & Ballengee-Morris, 2001) demonstrating new possibilities for participatory art and culture in the age of social media. This portrait of how the project came to be is presented as an example of how art world factions might be brought together, in both virtual and real spaces, …

Violence, Transcendence And Spectacle In The Age Of Social Media: #Jesuischarlie Demonstrations And Hollande's Speech After The 2015 Terrorist Attacks, Barbara Luisa Desoto
Theses and Dissertations
This study examines the reactions — both in real life and on social media — to two terrorist attacks in Paris: satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo in January 2015 and the Bataclan shooting in November 2015. Using Richard Sennett's Fall of Public Man and Antonin Artaud's Le théâtre et son double to explore these reactions as theater, this approach reveals the religious nature of supposedly secular reactions to religious extremism.
The Rise Of The Listicle: Using Eye-Tracking And Signal Detection Theory To Measure This Growing Phenomenon, Jason Robert Freeman
The Rise Of The Listicle: Using Eye-Tracking And Signal Detection Theory To Measure This Growing Phenomenon, Jason Robert Freeman
Theses and Dissertations
As online technology continues to progress, the modes of communication through which content can be shared have exponentially grown. These include advances in navigational options for presenting information and news online. Though the listicle has been around for centuries, the internet has proliferated its growth, as content producers rely on its structure as a vehicle for sharing information. This research shows that in the case of listicles, format had no direct effect on recall, however, participants who had a greater interest in the content showed significantly higher levels of memory sensitivity. This critical finding suggests that news outlets and content …
