Hungary For More? Russian Storm-1516 Narratives And Engagement Tactics Targeting Hungary’S 2026 Parliamentary Election., Ella Murray, Darren Linvill, Patrick Warren
Media Forensics Hub Reports
This report identifies and analyzes a coordinated influence operation aligned with the Russian Storm-1516 ecosystem and targeting Hungary’s 2026 election. The campaign leverages a network of inauthentic social media accounts to disseminate fabricated narratives, amplify political attacks, and undermine trust in Hungarian opposition leader Péter Magyar and the TISZA party. The campaign reflects a broader evolution in Russian influence operations, combining established narrative laundering techniques with new amplification strategies. These include the use of fabricated media outlets, paid influencers, and a network of commercial marketing accounts with links to Africa. The campaign leverages likely compensated influencer accounts as well as …

A Qualitative Study – The Effect Of Technology Through Social Media On Christian Young Adult’S Self-Image And Moral Development, Claudia Sosa
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
With technology usage growing among adolescents and much research conducted around the impact social media has on their development and mental wellbeing, there is little research that has been conducted to explore the lived experiences of social media on Christian young adult’s self-image and moral development and what role their faith plays in it. Through a qualitative study via a phenomenological approach and using semi structured interviews, this study sought to understand how Christian young adults ages 18-25 years old experience and describe a shared phenomenon and how they create common meaning on how they believe social media has impacted …

Redefining Aesthetics: The Communicative Construction Of Body Image And Self-Esteem Among Young Female Adults In Fiditi And Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria, Christopher Omamuromu Amojo
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
This study examines the communicative construction of body image and self-esteem among young female adults in Fiditi and Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria, within the context of contemporary social media use. Although a substantial body of scholarship has explored social media’s relationship with body image, much of this research is situated in Western contexts and framed predominantly through psychological or effects-based paradigms. Addressing this gap, the present study adopts a qualitative interpretive approach grounded in social construction theory and the sociocultural communication tradition to investigate how meanings surrounding beauty, self-worth, and identity are produced and negotiated through mediated interaction in a …
Investigating The Difference In Social Media Violations Between Novice And Experienced Teachers In The Virgin Islands Based On A Self-Report Measure Of Seriousness Of Ethical Trespass And Frequency Of Social Media Use, Vernon R. Callwood
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this quantitative, causal-comparative study was to investigate social media violations among novice and experienced teachers in the Virgin Islands, using a self-report measure of the seriousness of ethical trespass and the frequency of social media use. Research on the appropriate use of social media by teachers was still inchoate in developing social media literacy and establishing a protocol among educators, especially in the US Virgin Islands. Additional research can help to develop a framework for educators’ use of social media, thus influencing their praxis and student achievement. Very little research exists on the appropriate use of social …

Correlating Communication Channels With Baptism Outcomes: A Quantitative Case Study Using Media Multiplexity Theory In The Texas Conference Of Seventh-Day Adventists, Kenrunne L. Dixon
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this quantitative study was to examine the use of social media within the local church setting as a tool for engaging diverse communities through tailored, targeted messaging that addresses their unique needs and desires. The use of multiple channels helps connect on different levels, allowing for more profound and lasting relationships (Ledbetter, 2021). This quantitative research explored the local church and how it invests in connecting to its communities outside the church walls through multiple communication channels. Local church congregations invest significant time and resources in planning programs that seem only to attract current members. Their congregations …
Hormonal Birth Control Misinformation On Tiktok: A Content Analysis Of Influencer Narratives, Sarah Bdeir, Jana Hatahet, Liselle Tungol, Khush Hussain, Rumyah Rafique, Raneem Sabbaq, Ragad Almsaddi
Hormonal Birth Control Misinformation On Tiktok: A Content Analysis Of Influencer Narratives, Sarah Bdeir, Jana Hatahet, Liselle Tungol, Khush Hussain, Rumyah Rafique, Raneem Sabbaq, Ragad Almsaddi
Medical Student Research Symposium
Background:
Hormonal birth control is the most common form of reversible contraception. In the U.S., pharmacy data show oral contraceptive pill prescriptions declined 25.6% from March 2021 to October 2023. Meanwhile, patients increasingly seek health information on social media. On TikTok, “hormone hacking” content has surged, often portraying birth control as artificial, harmful, or even carcinogenic, despite a lack of supporting evidence. While accessible information on social media can be valuable, such narratives risk spreading misinformation, fueling mistrust in women’s health.
Methods:
We conducted a qualitative content analysis of 50 TikTok videos (March and September 2025) under #birthcontrol, #hormonehealth, #birthcontroltoxicity, …

Fear In The Forecast: Do You Believe The Government Controls The Weather?, Gabriella Bartsch
Honors Papers and Posters
Weather manipulation by the government is among the most widely believed conspiracy theories in America, with over 49 percent of Americans subscribing to this belief. As belief in weather-related conspiracies continues to gain traction, understanding the political and social factors that drive these beliefs becomes increasingly essential. In this study, data from the Chapman Survey of American Fears, a representative national sample of U.S. adults, as well as a qualitative content analysis of X/Twitter posts from 2020 to 2026, are used. This research examines how political partisanship and conspiratorial predisposition are reflected in media consumption and levels of institutional trust, …
Prescribing Drug Advertising Regulations In The Age Of Social Media, Robin Stein
Prescribing Drug Advertising Regulations In The Age Of Social Media, Robin Stein
Georgia State University Law Review
Social media has changed from platforms created to share life moments with friends to sharing life moments with nationwide followers—and making money from it. Any post could be an advertisement subtly made to sell a product to consumers, and now, the pharmaceutical industry is investing in this form of advertising as well. The Federal Trade Commission has been ramping up its regulation of endorsements and influencer advertisements on social media, but the Food and Drug Administration still has the authority to oversee prescription drug advertising, and it has been specifically focusing on television and radio advertisements in recent years. With …
The Spread Of Conspiracy Theories And Social Media Radicalization: “Stop The Steal” On Social Media, Zaynab Saleem
The Spread Of Conspiracy Theories And Social Media Radicalization: “Stop The Steal” On Social Media, Zaynab Saleem
Honors Theses
This study examines how conspiracy-related content spread across social media platforms following the 2020 U.S. Presidential election, specifically the “Stop the Steal” (STS) movement. While conspiracy theories are often seen as influential on niche parts of the internet, less is known about how they compare to non-conspiracy content in terms of engagement, visibility, and how they change over time. To address this gap, this study uses a quantitative approach to compare STS and non-STS content across two distinct types of social media platforms: a text-based platform (Platform A) and a video-sharing platform (Platform B). Data was collected using keyword searches …
Problematic Social Media Use’S Association With Social Anxiety And Neural Responsiveness To Reward From Social Media Feedback, Kaylee Mercer
Problematic Social Media Use’S Association With Social Anxiety And Neural Responsiveness To Reward From Social Media Feedback, Kaylee Mercer
All NMU Master's Theses
Social media has become increasingly relevant, especially among young adults. Those with social anxiety are more at risk for problematic social media use. Social media increases activity in the brain's reward centers. A common measure of the neural correlates of reward is the event-related potential, reward positivity (RewP) in EEG. Heightened RewP is associated with greater social anxiety. Problematic social media use is also associated with greater social anxiety. The neural correlates of reward elicited from social media use have yet to be adequately explored. The current research used continuous high-density electroencephalography to measure reward sensitivity when viewing positive or …
Conceptualizing Cancel Culture In Marketing: Moral Policing In A Hyperconnected World, T. Andrew Poehlman, Sairah Abraham
Conceptualizing Cancel Culture In Marketing: Moral Policing In A Hyperconnected World, T. Andrew Poehlman, Sairah Abraham
AMTP Proceedings 2026
The dynamics of marketing in society have shifted. Brands no longer sit at a distance broadcasting messages; they now occupy the same social networks as people, speaking in a human voice and inviting quasi-personal relationships. In this environment, we argue that corporate cancel culture is best understood as moral policing of brands that have chosen to act like human nodes in social networks. Drawing on hierarchy research, we frame cancellations as “leveling” responses when high-status brands behave in ways that feel domineering, hypocritical, or extractive rather than prestige-based and service-oriented. Using Moral Foundations Theory, we show how diverse cancellations can …
Consumer Protest In A Hyperconnected World, Cara Lewis Levin, T. Andrew Poehlman, Angeline Scheinbaum
Consumer Protest In A Hyperconnected World, Cara Lewis Levin, T. Andrew Poehlman, Angeline Scheinbaum
AMTP Proceedings 2026
Consumer protest in various forms—boycotts, negative word-of-mouth, brand sabotage—has largely been theorized within an “old” broadcast model of marketing, where firms spoke one-to-many and controlled most brand-related discourse. In contrast, today’s “hyperconnected” model embeds brands in dense human–technology networks, where social media, microtargeting, and always-on feeds shape how brands enter people’s lives and how protest unfolds. This paper argues that the informational substrate shift from broadcast to hyperconnectivity requires a fundamental rethinking of consumer protest. We first contrast the broadcast and hyperconnected models, then outline hyperconnectivity’s implications at the firm, consumer, and societal levels. We then revisit canonical constructs (e.g., …
The De-Influencingtrend On Social Media And Its Impact On Consumer Engagement, Lana Waschka, Andre Waschka
The De-Influencingtrend On Social Media And Its Impact On Consumer Engagement, Lana Waschka, Andre Waschka
AMTP Proceedings 2026
Research has shown how influencer marketing in social media has been an effective way for companies to reach their target customers and advertise their products and services (Ahmad, 2018). Brands rely on these influencers to promote products and encourage engagement and purchases. De-Influencing, a seemingly antithetical concept, is a recent trend on social media where influencers are discouraging their followers from what they claim are unnecessary consumption.
By analyzing a data set of 216 observations from TikTok, we find evidence that influencers who use de-influencing appeals have higher post engagement. Specifics posts that use de-influencing strategies receive a higher number …
When Faces Do Not Help: Visual Design And Engagement For B2b Technology Brands On Instagram, Ali Jamei, Sima Sabahi
When Faces Do Not Help: Visual Design And Engagement For B2b Technology Brands On Instagram, Ali Jamei, Sima Sabahi
AMTP Proceedings 2026
Firms increasingly use visual content on social media to connect with customers, yet most evidence on what drives engagement comes from consumer or personal contexts. This study examines how simple visual features in Instagram photos posted by B2B technology brands relate to engagement, interpreted through processing fluency. The dataset contains 600 photos from 30 B2B technology brands. For each image, we record likes and comments, collect brand and post level metadata, and use Microsoft Azure computer vision tools to detect faces, classify their age group and gender, and identify the dominant background color. Negative binomial models show that the presence …

The Digital Radical: Online Extremism, Propagation, And Terror By Design's Strategic Implications For Homeland Security, Hunter Lacroix, Shevach Berkovits
Journal of Strategic Security
The 'lone wolf' figure has long been central to counterterrorism analysis, representing the trajectory from non-participant to self-directed actor aligned with extremist causes. Traditional frameworks emphasizing in-person networks or online exposure, however, fail to capture the transformation of radicalization in the algorithmic age. The Arab Spring demonstrated the mobilizing power of digital platforms, yet movements like ISIS later weaponized these networks to provide ideology, belonging, and identity to dislocated populations. This article introduces the concept of the Digital Radical—an individual who transitions from passive consumer to active propagator of extremist narratives, sustaining and expanding radical ecosystems in a symbiotic …
Ai-Based Multi-Dimensional Coding Of Cancel Culture: Opportunities And Limits Of Llm-Based Categorization, Sairah Abraham, T. Andrew Poehlman
Ai-Based Multi-Dimensional Coding Of Cancel Culture: Opportunities And Limits Of Llm-Based Categorization, Sairah Abraham, T. Andrew Poehlman
AMTP Proceedings 2026
Large-scale qualitative coding is a bottleneck in marketing research, especially for complex, multi-level phenomena like corporate cancel culture. This paper uses over 100 well-known cancellation events as a testbed to evaluate whether GPT can act as a reliable, low-cost “independent rater” for rich categorical schemes. We develop a multi-dimensional coding framework (trigger locus, controversy source, social issue, moral foundation, and target level) and implement a staged GPT pipeline: zero-shot prompts benchmarked against human “gold standard” coders, scaled to larger samples, then extended with few-shot prompting and fine-tuning for harder constructs such as moral foundations. We compare GPT variants and roles, …

Respons Tagar #Kaburajadulu Pada Kolom Komentar Postingan Akun Instagram @Ariefnaikkelas, Hilya Diana Syifa, Muhammad Amin Ridhwan, Tria Wulandari, Sutrisno Gustiraja Alfarizi
Journal of Language, Literature, and Arts
This study aims to analyze patterns of netizens’ responses to the hashtag #KaburAjaDulu in the comment section of the Instagram account @Ariefnaikkelas as a form of language expression, humor, social criticism, and digital solidarity in contemporary Indonesian society. This research employs a qualitative descriptive approach within an interpretive paradigm and applies Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis, encompassing three dimensions: text, discourse practice, and social practice. Data were collected through digital documentation of Instagram users’ comments that use or respond to the hashtag. The findings reveal that the #KaburAjaDulu discourse is polarized into two main groups: the pro group, which interprets the …
Clinically Aligned Long-Context Transformers For Cross-Platform Mental Health Risk Detection, Aditya Tekale, Mohammad Masum
Clinically Aligned Long-Context Transformers For Cross-Platform Mental Health Risk Detection, Aditya Tekale, Mohammad Masum
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
Social media platforms contain rich but noisy narratives of psychological distress, creating opportunities for early mental health risk detection. However, existing datasets capture heterogeneous constructs such as suicide risk severity, depression diagnosis, and DSM-5 symptom presence, and most prior models are trained and evaluated on a single corpus, limiting their clinical alignment and cross-dataset generalizability. In this study, we fine-tune a domain-specific long-document transformer, AIMH/Mental-Longformer-base-4096, for binary mental health risk detection (risk vs. no risk) using two clinically aligned Reddit datasets: the C-SSRS Reddit corpus and the eRisk 2025 depression dataset. To handle long user histories, we introduce an LLM-based …

The Living Archive: Photography, Social Media, And The New Frontier Of Activism, Lundyn C. Herring
LSU Master's Theses
This thesis seeks to analyze the discursive field and technology of photography and its multi-faceted role in the oppression of colonized people under Western imperialism. Among the main collection highlights of many established state-run archival institutions are photographic records consisting of surveillance images, mugshots, and other visual media as representations of the political hegemony that is exerted over governed peoples. From the mid-19th century to 2026, much has shifted in the realm of photography with the introduction of smartphones, accessible technology, and social media platforms during the beginning of the twenty-first century. As states and powerholders apply the technology of …

Media Forensics Hub Creative Inquiry Reports
For this project our team expanded our search for inauthentic actors to new locations, specifically Bluesky. With the help of internet watchdogs Antibot4Navalny and dTeam, we began investigating a network known as “Matryoshka”1, aka “Operation Overload”2, aka “Storm-1679.”3 We discovered the network was stealing the identities of moderately known people of influence ranging from political candidates to university staff members. Because Twitter/X users had not created versions of themselves on Bluesky, due to its relatively new arrival on the social media scene, their identities were ripe for the taking by nefarious actors. During the time we observed this campaign (January …

Feeding Negativity On Social Media: How Compensating Customers Creates Vicious Cycles Of Complaint, Yuchi Zhang, Kunpeng Zhang
Feeding Negativity On Social Media: How Compensating Customers Creates Vicious Cycles Of Complaint, Yuchi Zhang, Kunpeng Zhang
Marketing
Purpose
The study explores the paradoxical impact of managerial responses to negative comments on social media, revealing how offering compensation inadvertently escalates negativity into a vicious cycle. Through a unique Facebook policy quasi-experiment, we show that apologies, in contrast, effectively neutralize further complaints.
Design/methodology/approach
We utilize interactive data on Facebook to assess how firms' managerial responses to negative comments – particularly responses involving compensation topics – affect the volume and tone of subsequent complaints. Additionally, we use instrumental variables and difference-in-differences (DID) models to account for potential sources of endogeneity.
Findings
The results reveal that managerial response increase both the …
