Palliative Care Beyond Cancer: The Use Of The P-Cares Tool, Breslin E. Meyer Jul 2025

Palliative Care Beyond Cancer: The Use Of The P-Cares Tool, Breslin E. Meyer

Dissertations

Emergency Departments (EDs) often lack the necessary resources and protocols to provide comprehensive palliative care, resulting in inadequate pain and symptom management (Stoltenberg et al., 2022). This study investigates the potential transformative impact of a palliative care consultation on patients with advanced disease who screen positive using the validated P-CaRES tool. The PICOT questions: Will patients with end-stage COPD, CHF, and or other chronic conditions benefit from P-CaRES screening in the emergency department over nine weeks and receive more palliative care consultations from their primary care providers?

This project was conducted over 9 weeks, utilizing convenience sampling to select 20 …

Developing Affirmative Housing And Building Community For Older Lgbtq+ Adults In Spokane, Washington, Katie Diane Miller Jul 2025

Developing Affirmative Housing And Building Community For Older Lgbtq+ Adults In Spokane, Washington, Katie Diane Miller

2025 Symposium

This qualitative, exploratory study seeks to propose potential community interventions that will increase access to inclusive housing and decrease social isolation among LGBTQ+ individuals over 50 years of age based on currently available data. Social isolation has been recognized as a public health issue widely impacting communities across the United States. The older LGBTQ+ population is especially impacted by social isolation because of systemic discrimination and limitations. LGBTQ+ older adults in the US have historically faced a lack of legal protections, gaps in healthcare access, and structural and interpersonal inequity because of system development that support binary beliefs. These factors …

Dangerous Disclosure: An Autoethnographic Account Of My Autism Diagnosis And The Social Work Profession, Alice Running Jun 2025

Dangerous Disclosure: An Autoethnographic Account Of My Autism Diagnosis And The Social Work Profession, Alice Running

Ought: The Journal of Autistic Culture

The disclosing of an autism diagnosis presents particular challenge for autistic mothers, especially for those autistic mothers who are additionally advocating for their autistic children within public service provision. Research into autism and parental blame demonstrates how autistic mothers are disproportionately exposed to aspects of mother-blame.

Disclosure of an autism diagnosis for autistic mothers can therefore be understood as a complex decision-making process whereby managing autistic identity and understanding autistic self are impacted by the additional need to manage the perceptions of others and associated stigma. The decision-making process is further influenced by the tangible consequences of mother-blame (child removal) …

The Effects Of Being The Oldest Daughter And A Caretaker, Sahira Gonzalez

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

In many households, oldest daughters are a pivotal person as they have many responsibilities. One of the main responsibilities is caretaking their younger siblings. These young women are responsible for child rearing, nurturing, educating and guiding their younger siblings, essentially becoming a parental figure. While this is an issue in many households, it is not thoroughly discussed within the research field. The purpose of this study is to examine how oldest daughters are affected by becoming a caretaker for their younger siblings and how it results in these young girls having a negative impact in their well-being that results in …

What Is The Correlation Between 9-1-1 Emergency Psychiatric Calls In San Bernardino County And Mental Health Services, Lea M. Munoz

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

It is important to address the mental health crisis in the United States to understand the effects it has on individuals, families, and communities and promote better access to mental health services. The mental health crisis has led to an increase in demand for mental health care and economically the U.S. has not been able to satisfy this demand. This paper raises awareness about the issue by emphasizing the need for better access to mental health, reducing the stigma in mental illness, building resilience in individuals, and connecting people to resources that will create a safer and more welcoming environment. …

Analysis Of The At-Risk Mental Health Of Military Children And Proposed Intervention Plans To Be Implemented By Mental Health Professionals, Claire E. Anderson

Senior Honors Theses

Mental health for military children is an unseen life-threatening epidemic that must be brought to the attention of Americans. The statistics surrounding the mental health of the average military child are alarming and saddening. Access and knowledge of mental health resources for military children may significantly decrease the high percentage of military children who experience poor mental health. To raise awareness, increase research findings, and support military children well, it is necessary to have a thorough understanding of the problem both presently and historically, to be aware of current resources in place, to understand current and past policies surrounding the …

Enhancing Care: Child Protective Service Workers’ Perspectives And Experiences Of Serving Children With Disabilities, Meekyung Han, Celia Rocio Murillo Lechuga, Gaby Solis

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Children with disabilities (CWD) are overrepresented in the child welfare system (CWS), yet limited research exists on how child protective service (CPS) workers respond. This exploratory qualitative study conducted semi-structured individual interviews with 12 CPS workers in Northern California to explore their experiences. Thematic analysis identified five key themes: contributors to maltreatment, challenges of working with CWD, the influence of personal/professional experience, collaboration with disability experts, and the need for training. Findings suggest that disability-focused training in the graduate Title IV-E program and ongoing professional training can enhance CPS workers’ competency and strengthen interactions with CWD, leading to better outcomes.

What Is Success? How Peer Support Workers In Ontario See Addiction & Recovery, Ngaire Rasmussen Jan 2025

What Is Success? How Peer Support Workers In Ontario See Addiction & Recovery, Ngaire Rasmussen

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The drug crisis in Canada has high mortality rates, especially in remote and rural communities, but there are significant barriers to accessing healthcare to which peer support may represent a partial solution, (Eddie et al., 2019; Englander et al., 2020; The Government of Canada, 2023; Kourgiantakis et al., 2023; Lavalley et al., 2020; Lennox et al., 202; Russell et al., 2021). Research how peer support workers define success in their work with adults experiencing addiction in Ontario, Canada is lacking, but important to understanding the crisis and implementing peer programs. Grounded in Marxist theory, the following exploratory research investigated the …

Using A Sober Curious Framework To Explore Barriers And Facilitators To Helping Sexual Minority Women Reduce Alcohol-Related Harms: Protocol For A Descriptive Study, Tonda L. Using A Sober Curious Framework To Explore Barriers And Facilitators To Helping Sexual Minority Women Reduce Alcohol-Related Harms: Protocol For A Descriptive Study, Tonda L. Hughes, Lauren Bochicchio, Laurie A. Drabble, Belinda Lunnay, David Whiteley, Jillian R. Scheer, Beth Meadows, Paul Ward, Carol Emslie

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Background: Globally, women consume less alcohol than men, but alcohol consumption among women has declined less in recent years than among men. Drinking rates and alcohol-related harms vary substantially across population groups of women, and sexual minority women (eg, lesbian, bisexual, and queer) are at notably high risk. An emerging body of literature suggests that in addition to minority stress (eg, stigma, discrimination), drinking norms and drinking cultures likely influence sexual minority women’s drinking. Almost no research has explored these factors as possible targets of interventions. Sober curiosity is a rapidly growing wellness movement that may be particularly salient for …

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Introduction: State policies surrounding sexual minority (SM) rights are associated with tobacco use among SM individuals. Research is scant regarding the role of distinct SM policy categories on SM young adults’ (SMYAs) tobacco use and mechanisms explaining these associations. Methods: We analyzed 2023 survey data from 1100 SMYAs (ages 18–34; 14.2 % gender minority; 66.1 % bisexual+, 29.1 % monosexual; 53.2 % racial/ethnic minority) with representation across 45 US states and DC. Regression-based models examined: 1) direct associations of residing in states with negative and limited (vs. comprehensive) SM state policies with respect to 7 policy categories (relationship/parent recognition, nondiscrimination, …

Case Study In Deaf Mental Health Care: Integration Of Therapeutic Attunement And Skills-Training, Julia Ball, Lindsey Sankin Sep 2024

Case Study In Deaf Mental Health Care: Integration Of Therapeutic Attunement And Skills-Training, Julia Ball, Lindsey Sankin

JADARA

Deaf Mental Health Care (DMHC) is a specialty involving clinical expertise and self-awareness in therapeutic work with D/deaf people.1 Within the DMHC framework, this case report describes the psychotherapy of one Deaf individual, whose developmental experiences are common among D/deaf people. It illustrates how clinical models developed with hearing people informed the clinical team working with this Deaf individual. The treatment integrated focused skill-building with reparative emotional and linguistic “attunement.” In addition, the case illustrates how clinicians and their clients can use the intersections of their different languages and cultures as growth opportunities.
