Latinas And Religion: Subordination Or State Of Grace?, Laura M. Padilla Jul 2000

Latinas And Religion: Subordination Or State Of Grace?, Laura M. Padilla

Faculty Scholarship

This Essay addresses how religion simultaneously subordinates Latinas while serving as a source of strength. More specifically, it focuses on Catholicism and how the same church and religion have a fragmented and varied impact on Latinas, particularly Mexican-Americans, with whom I am most familiar.

Irrelevancy Of God: Criticism Of The Rational Religious Paradigm, Boaz Ahad Ha'am May 2000

Irrelevancy Of God: Criticism Of The Rational Religious Paradigm, Boaz Ahad Ha'am

Undergraduate University Honors Capstones

The author looks at works that call for the assimilation of philosophy with religion. The capstone questioned the rationality of this logic by taking a closer look at the Real Religious Paradigm. It is argued that one cannot claim to be Rational and Religious at the same time without compromising either position, therefore no person can be RRP unless they are nonsensical.

Disturbing The Peace, Emily A. Hartigan Jan 1998

Disturbing The Peace, Emily A. Hartigan

Faculty Articles

When concerns of race, gender, and orientation intersect with the Catholic faith and church, the interaction can prove painful and difficult. Experiences of feeling judged or condemned ricochet between camps, the members of each desperate to defend that which they feel is inherent to them, to their identities and self-understanding. But despite the damage that Catholicism can and has inflicted by its striction and history, it retains a mode of outreach to the disaffected—La Virgen, dark and female and still only just coming to be understood. She is controversial and always subject to attempts at political manipulation, but she is …

Does Protestant Fundamentalism Produce Traditional Views?: The Impact Of Religious Commitment Affiliation On Gender Role Beliefs And Political Ideology, Melissa Myers May 1997

Does Protestant Fundamentalism Produce Traditional Views?: The Impact Of Religious Commitment Affiliation On Gender Role Beliefs And Political Ideology, Melissa Myers

Student Work

This research looks at the relationship between religious commitment/affiliation and traditional beliefs. Data from the 1993 General Social Survey is used to test hypotheses linking religious commitment and religious affiliation to traditional gender role beliefs and conservative political views. Findings show statistical significance but weak substantive support for the idea that fundamentalists hold more traditional gender role beliefs and political ideology. Future research linking these attitudes to the actual behaviors of men and women in fundamentalist religions is proposed.

[Review Of] Clyde Holler. Black Elk's Religion: The Sun Dance And Lakota Catholicism, David M. Gradwohl Jan 1997

[Review Of] Clyde Holler. Black Elk's Religion: The Sun Dance And Lakota Catholicism, David M. Gradwohl

Ethnic Studies Review

Few, if any, American Indian individuals are more widely known in the United States than the Lakota holy man, Black Elk (1863-1950). His story, particularly as presented by John Neihardt in Black Elk Speaks, has been required reading for legions of students taking classes in literature, religion, anthropology, and American Indian Studies. Scholars in those fields have generated a body of critical literature which has taken on a life of its own as Neihardt's book, originally published in 1931, has been reprinted in paperback editions many times since 1960. During the 1970s, Neihardt appeared on the Dick Cavett show and, …

Preparing The Way Of The Lord: Three Case Studies Of Ministerial Preconditioning In Congregations Before The Great Awakening, 1675-1750, Douglas Kevin Fidler Jan 1997

Preparing The Way Of The Lord: Three Case Studies Of Ministerial Preconditioning In Congregations Before The Great Awakening, 1675-1750, Douglas Kevin Fidler

Doctoral Dissertations

This study demonstrates that ministerial predecessors in three northern New England communities actually preconditioned community reactions to the Great Awakening during the years preceding the revival itself. "Preconditioning" is not the ordinary "influence" of pastors within their churches and professional circles suggested in other works. This kind of influence might cause parishioners to consider various behavioral alternatives when confronted by spiritual circumstances. Preconditioned congregations would already have established paradigms for responding to spiritual stimulus. While individual parishioners might act in ways consistent with their own personalities, psychological needs, and spiritual sensitivities, congregations as a whole would apply a predetermined set …

This Is Gonna Hurt Like Hell: A Pentecostal Student Enters The Academy, Stephen R. Barrett Jan 1997

This Is Gonna Hurt Like Hell: A Pentecostal Student Enters The Academy, Stephen R. Barrett

Doctoral Dissertations

The little that has been written about expressions of religious experience in the field of Composition Studies focuses on the many ways religious belief places its adherents at a disadvantage in writing classrooms. We discuss in our journals and staffrooms only those religious conservatives who are most expressive of their beliefs. Many others sit in silence during discussions that may reveal anything of their beliefs, fearing to offend teachers and peers or to expose themselves to offenses from others. Unfortunately, these silent students contribute little or nothing to our understanding of the abilities of faith-centered students. Many are writing with …

The Third Way: A Study Of Economic Justice In The Writings Of Karol Wojtyla (Pope John Paul Ii)., Woodard King Mott Jr Jan 1997

The Third Way: A Study Of Economic Justice In The Writings Of Karol Wojtyla (Pope John Paul Ii)., Woodard King Mott Jr

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Pope John Paul II, born Karol Wojtyla, has written extensively about the human person and how that person acts in the world. Beginning with Wojtyla's doctoral dissertation presented at the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas on the Catholic mystic St. John of the Cross and continuing through the most recent best seller, Crossing the Threshold of Hope, Christian personalism has pervaded Wojtyla's writings, encyclicals, and public utterances. Wojtyla's perspective on economic justice, as shaped by his Christian personalism, is the subject of this dissertation. A systematic investigation of Wojtyla's theory of economic justice reveals a third way of economic …

A Study Of Haitian Mormon Converts Dwelling In New York City: A Cross-Cultural Perspective In Understanding, Interpreting, And Experiencing The Mormon Subculture, Yvon Milien Jan 1997

A Study Of Haitian Mormon Converts Dwelling In New York City: A Cross-Cultural Perspective In Understanding, Interpreting, And Experiencing The Mormon Subculture, Yvon Milien

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines the roles played by understanding, interpretation of practices, and experience in Mormon culture when Haitians convert to Mormonism. In relationship to their previous cultural practices, this thesis explores whether Haitian converts develop one of three types of behaviors: discard old practices, retain elements of old practices, or seek to establish a balance between former and new religious practices. In-depth interviews with twelve subjects living in New York City suggest that most active converts discarded their old cultural traditions. This study suggests that only interpretation influences developing types of behavior. However, it was not expected that most converts …

The Roman Catholic Church's Institutionalized Biases: Syncretic Processes In Tanzania, Julian M. Murchison May 1996

The Roman Catholic Church's Institutionalized Biases: Syncretic Processes In Tanzania, Julian M. Murchison

Southern Anthropologist

My ethnographic fieldwork in Tanzania suggests that many Tanzanian Roman Catholics would prefer for the Church to adopt more syncretic practices drawing on autochthonous customs, symbols, and ideas. Thoughts and suggestions from Tanzanians on this topic incorporate a wide variety of possibilities. Nevertheless, the present situation in the Roman Catholic Church in Tanzania seems to diverge significantly from these possibilities. Given this context, my paper will describe and examine the connections between the organizational structure of the Roman Catholic Church and syncretic manifestations in the Church in Tanzania. I will analyze the relation between the locations of decision-making and authority …

Religion And Healing The Mind/Body/Self, Meredith B. Mcguire Mar 1996

Religion And Healing The Mind/Body/Self, Meredith B. Mcguire

Sociology & Anthropology Faculty Research

In order to understand the linkage between religion and healing, we must go well beyond the theme of body regulation. Although religion does involve body regulation and control, and although these functions are reflected in healing practices, there are many other ways by which religion is linked with human bodies. We will arrive at a far richer appreciation of this linkage if we start with a broad sociology of the human body, its illnesses and healing, and ask the expanded question: How is religion involved in these complex processes?

God Is As God Does: Law, Anthropology, And The Definition Of "Religion", James M. Donovan Sep 1995

God Is As God Does: Law, Anthropology, And The Definition Of "Religion", James M. Donovan

Law Faculty Scholarly Articles

This Article first discusses the judicial deliberations upon the definition of religion. That discussion adopts a chronological sequence because, in legal matters, that is the one that counts.

It can be a tedious, but not particularly difficult task to summarize the legal struggle to define religion. The strategy applied to evaluate the product of that struggle is intellectual triangulation, whereby bearings from two fixed positions are used to specify that of that third. By analogy, the correct definition of "religion" can be identified by finding where the legal efforts intersect with an independent sighting of the same target. Where this …

Masked Rituals Of The Kodiak Archipelago, Dominique Desson Apr 1995

Masked Rituals Of The Kodiak Archipelago, Dominique Desson

Anthropology

The traditional culture of the Alutiiq speakers of the Kodiak Archipelago is not well known, and information on their spiritual and ritual life has been lacking. In this thesis I use ethnographic, ethnohistoric, and iconographic materials to investigate the Koniag traditional world view and belief system and some aspects of the Koniag ritual system. Specifically, I analyze the individual, private masked rituals associated with whaling and the public masked rituals performed during the winter festivals. In the second part, I examine a large sample of surviving Alutiiq masks in order to determine aesthetic canons evident in the work of 19th …

A Qualitative Analysis Of The Non-Lds Experience In Utah, Jesse Smith Bushman Jan 1995

A Qualitative Analysis Of The Non-Lds Experience In Utah, Jesse Smith Bushman

Theses and Dissertations

Utah's foundation under the influence of the LDS church, and the continued influence of the majority LDS population in the state make this area unique in the United States. This situation makes life for the non-LDS in Utah somewhat different than in other areas. Through a series of interviews with members of the Roman Catholic, Presbyterian, Baptist (National Baptist Convention), Buddhist, and Jewish faiths, this thesis produced a large body of qualitative data concerning the non-LDS experience in Utah.

The experience of non-LDS people in Utah can by typified, with a few exceptions, as a traditional majority/minority interaction. Elements of …

Final Vows: Organizational Dilemmas And Emergent Status-Reconstruction Of The Contemporary American Nun, Mary Anne Wichroski Jan 1994

Final Vows: Organizational Dilemmas And Emergent Status-Reconstruction Of The Contemporary American Nun, Mary Anne Wichroski

Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation examines the effects of societal, institutional, and structural change on the status of Roman Catholic nuns. Based on interviews with 34 members of female religious orders, archival materials, Church documents, and participant observation, two case study orders (apostolic and cloistered) are compared in terms of structural change since Vatican II and their relative viability in the 1990s. As members of declining organizations, apostolic sisters are reconstructing their roles by drawing upon sources that pre-date formal hierarchical structures, as well as aspects of gender-status. Although active sisters show some congruence with feminist beliefs on work-related issues, other aspects of …
