Early Israel As The Kingdom Of Yahweh, Albert E. Glock Oct 1970

Early Israel As The Kingdom Of Yahweh, Albert E. Glock

Concordia Theological Monthly

Archaeological evidence indicates that early Israel as the kingdom of Yahweh functioned on the analogy of Ancient Near Eastern vassal states. In the religion of Early Israel both law and warfare were vehicles for the extension of Yahweh's covenant rule.

Religious Preference And Worldly Success: A Comparison Of Protestants And Catholics, James W. Crowley Jun 1967

Religious Preference And Worldly Success: A Comparison Of Protestants And Catholics, James W. Crowley

Student Work

The problem, of theory construction toward a sociological understanding of the religious-economic relationship has relied to a great extent upon the work of a German social scientist, Max Weber.1 Historical observations made by Weber, which described a meaningful relationship between Protestantism and modern industrial capitalism,2 stimulated scholars from a number of fields to continue investigation of this relationship. The Weberian thesis advanced the position that religious and economic phenomena within a society were mutually interdependent. More specifically, Weber was concerned with the 'economic ethics of a religion'3 in relation to the economic institution. This relationship was considered …

A Study Of Numinous Experience, Dama C. Cofield

Graduate Thesis Collection

For the past ten years I have worked in the area of Christian education in an ecumenical context. This has afforded me the privilege of participating in many communities of faith as well as the challenge of ministry and leadership in diverse situations. These responsibilities, involving me in the lives and personalities of fellow human beings and the necessity of personal growth to meet the demands of my own life's situations have forced me to examine repeatedly the premises of my own faith and its relevance to life.

Christianity And Communism -An Ideological Comparison, Ralph L. Moellering Nov 1963

Christianity And Communism -An Ideological Comparison, Ralph L. Moellering

Concordia Theological Monthly

In his book Communism and Christ, Charles W. Lowry contends that we are living in a new religious age. As evidence he points to the post-World War II popular religious revival, to what he calls "a new priesthood" set up by psychiatry, to the influence of existential thought in philosophy and theology (consider Paul Tillich), and to the "collective neurosis" brought on by the crisis and anxieties of our hydrogen-missile age. "The final and conclusive proof that we have entered into a new religious era Lowry perceived in the expansion and menace of the "new universal salvation religion - Communism."

The Aspect Of Freedom In Paul's Theology, M. Eugene Boring Apr 1963

The Aspect Of Freedom In Paul's Theology, M. Eugene Boring

Graduate Thesis Collection

The study of the New Testament properly begins with Paul, since the earliest documents of the New Testament are from his hand. In this, my first serious attempt to make a study of one aspect of the theology of the New Testament, I have thus chosen to begin with Paul. I have tried to choose a topic which would allow me to study Paul's theology as a whole, but which would permit me to approach it from a viewpoint not already overused.

Section XXI: Meaning in the Social Sciences

Vastly increased research and a sounder technique in history in the nineteenth century had two influences on the social sciences. When an enthusiasm for the records of history was combined with the evolutionary perspective, it often resulted in the search for and the imposition of patterns of development on history in general or on the history of particular subject matters such as economics, politics, morals, or religion. Social scientists looked to history for explanations, in the hope of finding inevitable laws, stages of development, or the forces that moved human society. As historians worked out a critical method for their …

Caste In The Churches Of South India In Madurai, Joseph Walter Elder Jan 1954

Caste In The Churches Of South India In Madurai, Joseph Walter Elder

Honors Papers

The actual conception of this thesis came in early 1952 as I was reading the last chapter of C. W. Ranson's book "A City in Transition". He had been discussing various moralistic forces in and out of Hinduism that were working to reform caste. His final paragraph was a quote from the Report of the Commission on Christian Higher Education in India ending with the statement: "If India is really to recover hope and energy for the service Of men and the rebuilding Of life it must reach a deeper adjustment than it has yet attained. It must believe in …

The Tree Of Life Symbol; Its Significance In Ancient American Religion, Irene M. Briggs (Woodford) Jun 1950

The Tree Of Life Symbol; Its Significance In Ancient American Religion, Irene M. Briggs (Woodford)

Theses and Dissertations

Not too much is known today about religion of ancient Mesoamerica, and it will only be through an intensive comparative study of the various deities as presented in the heiroglyphic manuscripts and native writings, and of the symbolic religious art in the architectural and sculptural remains, that greater knowledge of the subject will be gained. The "Tree of Life," one of the most striking religious symbols of the area, may be one key to such knowledge.

A Study Of Religious Drama As A Resource Of The Church, Illustrated By An Original Biblical Drama, Marien E. Griffith

The main purpose of this study is to determine the place of religious drama in the church. Data of information were secured from personal letters and interviews with pastors and lay-people in Omaha, Nebraska; Council Bluffs, Sioux City and Des Moines, Iowa; St. Louis, Missouri; Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minnesota; Idaho Falls, Iowa; and Monrovia, California. A questionnaire was used as a guiding basis for the interviews. The case method and survey method were used. Drama is one of the most interesting of …

The Theology Of Israel (From Abraham To Moses), Leroy C. Rincker Jun 1923

The Theology Of Israel (From Abraham To Moses), Leroy C. Rincker

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

We have thus endeavored to present Israel's early conception of God. The critical theories have been· tried and found wanting. They are weak and instead of. going to the core of the matter• they harp on external details. At times we were grieved by the blasphemous assertions of men, who refuse to bend their way to embrace plain facts; then again the :naive and arbitrary interpretations of Gunkel and Goldziher have interested and amused us.
