Evaluating The Effectiveness Of The Retelling With The Aid Of A Story-Map Procedure With Weaker Readers, Madeleine Boekeman

Theses : Honours

This study examines the effectiveness of the 'Retelling with the aid of a story-map procedure' as an instructional approach which could help weaker readers in their second year of schooling. Based on the literature and research findings which support a view of language as a developmental, holistic and natural process, the 'Retelling with the aid of a story-map procedure' was chosen. It was hypothesised that it would help the weaker readers make connections between oral language and written language, develop meaning seeking behaviours and increase their 'data pool' of linguistic knowledge. The goal of this study was to seek answers …

A Comparative Study Of Chinese Efl Reading Instruction And American Esl Reading Instruction, Changhua Wang

Dissertations and Theses

Reading instruction in China and that in the United States are so different that they are not compatible. In fact, they seem to go in opposite directions. This study examined some of the differences between Chinese EFL reading instruction and American ESL reading instruction through analyzing selected tape-recordings of reading classes from China and the United States, and comparing Chinese EFL reading textbooks with American ESL reading textbooks.

This study was intended to answer the following questions.

1. Is a bottom-up method of reading really taught in China while a top-down method is taught in the United States?

2. Compared …

Law And Literature: 'No Manifesto', James Boyd White Jan 1988

Law And Literature: 'No Manifesto', James Boyd White

Articles

With what hopes and expectations should a lawyer turn to the reading of imaginative literature? To books and articles that purport to connect that literature in some way with the law? In particular, is "law and literature" -to which this Symposium is directed-to be thought of as an academic "field" like law and psychiatry, say, or law and economics? If so, what can it purport to teach us? If not, how is it to be thought of?

Development Of An Instructional Module For Beginning And Low-Intermediate English As A Second Language Students At The Borough Of Manhattan Community College, Linda R. Markstein

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

In 1985, the faculty Council of the Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC) passed a resolution that severely limited the courses that English as a second language (ESL) students could take outside of the developmental area. As a result of this resolution, ESL students were getting much less exposure to print than they had previously: thus, a critical need developed for new materials that offered beginning and low-intermediate level ESL students significant exposure to reading and that integrated reading and writing so that theses students could efficiently and effectively develop their English skills.

The need for new materials meeting these …

A Study Of Experiences Provided In The Home Environment Associated With Accelerated Reading Abilities As Reported By Parents Of Intellectually Superior Preschoolers., Jeanne Marie Laporte Burns

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this study was to look beyond the general effect that intelligence and environment have upon the development of reading and investigate (a) differences in how accelerated readers and nonreaders perform on written language tasks and (b) differences in written language experiences provided in the home environment, as reported by parents, associated with the development of accelerated reading abilities. Due to the broadness of the term written language, only four aspects of written language were examined (i.e., awareness of concepts about print, awareness of print in the environment, awareness of letter/sound correspondences in words--invented spelling, and awareness during …

Aliteracy: The Relationship Between The Electronic Culture And Voluntary Reading, Geraldine H. Aschenbeck Jan 1986

Aliteracy: The Relationship Between The Electronic Culture And Voluntary Reading, Geraldine H. Aschenbeck

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Aliteracy, the term used to describe those who can read but choose not to do so, has become a grave concern in this country. A review of the literature indicates Americans are choosing to use their leisure time to interact with the electronic media to gather information instead of reading to gain knowledge. The skills of critical thinking and decision making are at stake. Schools and homes who have been successful in teaching the skill or reading must now instill the value of reading in order to preserve the democratic process upon which this country was founded.

The Judicial Opinion And The Poem: Ways Of Reading, Ways Of Life, James Boyd White Jan 1984

The Judicial Opinion And The Poem: Ways Of Reading, Ways Of Life, James Boyd White

Michigan Law Review

This paper is an essay in what I want to call the poetics of the law. I begin with a largely autobiographical account of what seems to me a striking similarity in the ways in which poetry and law once were taught - and to some degree still are taught, though perhaps less comfortably so. My first object is to suggest some connections: between these two kinds of thought and expression; between the ways in which we are habituated to read texts of each sort; and between the dilemmas that confront readers and critics in each field. In doing these …

A Study Of The Relation Of Rhythm Ability To Reading Achievement In A Sample Of Fifth-Grade Students, Margarete Moon

Master's Theses

Problem

Recent research in the area of development of language skills indicates a trend toward exploration of the role of the auditory modality in learning to read. Rhythm is frequently thought to be an important contributing element. A correlational study was undertaken to discover the extent to which a relationship exists between rhythm ability and reading achievement in a sample of middle class fifth-grade children of both sexes.

Method

One hundred and thirty-seven fifth-grade students participated in the study. Of these, 63 were males and 74 were females. Pearson product-moment correlation coefficients were found between scores of rhythm ability and …
