Theses
This thesis aims to convey the "leisure" and "slow" Chinese life concept. This Thesis shows the lives of people in different dynasties from a third-person perspective. Using traditional costumes as the carrier, it focuses on using semi-realistic visual styles to show the connection between emotions and the environment, creating an atmosphere-filled picture, and arousing the audience's thinking about the rhythm of life and their spiritual yearning for the non-obvious pleasures in life.
A Ludic Generation: Bridging Architecture, Games, And Technology For More Playful Spaces, Jade Lefebvre
A Ludic Generation: Bridging Architecture, Games, And Technology For More Playful Spaces, Jade Lefebvre
Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year
In a world dominated by mundane environments, this thesis proposes a novel approach to designing public spaces that integrate game design principles and extended reality technology. By embracing the inherent ludic behavior found in human nature and games, I aim to elevate everyday experiences.
This research delves into the capabilities of extended reality technology, psychology of play and its cultural and societal background, psychology of human archetypes, and game design components as an extraction for architectural typologies. Key findings reveal that by analyzing game components, design languages are formed and can be used to develop feasible architectural typologies.
The significance …
Playful Learning: The Disposition Of Architecture As Pedagogy, Alyssa Franklin
Playful Learning: The Disposition Of Architecture As Pedagogy, Alyssa Franklin
Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year
Education is a vital foundation of a society. The standard of today’s school environment is built upon the pedigree of the factory schools from the nineteenth century. However, elementary age children require a flexible, engaging, and creative learning environment that the standard school environment does not provide. Learning is a dynamic and innovative action. Architecture should mirror the learning that it supports through providing spaces that allow for flexibility, engagement, accessibility, and attraction. Children are transformed by the spaces they are in, spaces that will leave lasting impacts on the cognitive development of the children, spaces that can be playful …
Juror's Perceptions Of Evidence-Based Suspicion, Nicholas Welter
Juror's Perceptions Of Evidence-Based Suspicion, Nicholas Welter
Student Theses
Eyewitness misidentification is a leading cause of wrongful conviction. Although the prior probability of guilt (i.e., pre-identification evidence strength) is the most important factor for predicting a defendant’s actual guilt status and the accuracy of any subsequent eyewitness identification, no study has examined whether it affects juror decisions. This oversight is problematic because when officers place suspects in lineups when there is little evidence connecting them to the crime, it falls on jurors to examine the probative value of identification evidence. Participants (N = 357) watched a mock trial depicting an armed robbery that varied pre-identification evidence (strong vs. …
Transcendence: Exploring The Connections Between Transgender/Gender Non-Conforming Identities And Experiences Of Nature Through Art, Mc Jackson
Undergraduate Theses
“Transcendence: Exploring the connections between transgender/gender non-conforming identities and experiences of nature through art” is the written portion of a creative thesis revolving around an immersive art installation and short film. Transcendence, the installation, was created to promote connection by exploring the overlap between transgender and gender non-conforming (GNC) experiences and experiences of nature. Part of this installation is a short film of interviews conducted with transgender and GNC individuals about nature, their gender experiences, and the transcendent nature of the two. The written thesis analyzes existing literature on nature as a restorative, therapeutic, spiritual setting, offers insight into …
Agreement Of Psychiatric Diagnoses Within And Between Groups Of Mental Health Clinicians From Different Disciplines, Wade Mcguire
Agreement Of Psychiatric Diagnoses Within And Between Groups Of Mental Health Clinicians From Different Disciplines, Wade Mcguire
Dissertations
The development of therapy as a treatment option for mental health problems has led to the creation of different disciplines. Each discipline has developed its own conceptualization of classification and treatment of mental health problems. These conceptualizations have led to different areas of focus for each of the disciplines, specifically counseling, psychology, and social work. The purpose of this study is to investigate whether these areas of focus influence how each discipline diagnoses. For this study, data was collected by having clinicians provide diagnoses for three fictitious clients. The vignettes for the clients were taken from a psychopathology textbook to …
The Study Of A Generalized Fitness Education Program's Effect On Personality Traits, Garrett Schliep
The Study Of A Generalized Fitness Education Program's Effect On Personality Traits, Garrett Schliep
Theses/Capstones/Creative Projects
This longitudinal study was to measure the influence of a generalized fitness education program on the percentile of individuals’ personality traits in college aged individuals. The personality traits are those determined in the Five Factor Model of Personality. The Five Factor Model of Personality is a beneficial tool used in exercise psychology that refers to a broad domain of personality traits often referred to as the “Big Five”. The findings reject the hypothesis that a fitness education program would shift an individual’s personality a statistically significant amount.
The Sexual Objectification Experiences Of Non-Binary People, Lee R. Pradell
The Sexual Objectification Experiences Of Non-Binary People, Lee R. Pradell
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Transgender people are a historically marginalized and disenfranchised group, leading to discriminatory interpersonal treatment such as sexual objectification experiences (SOEs), a type of objectification. Women look at themselves the way men look at them, reducing themselves to objects for someone else’s viewing. This flattening of oneself to value your bodily presentation over functioning increases dissociative states and promotes disordered eating behaviors. Non-binary people experience additive stressors within objectification experiences as people with less social power than cisgender women. This thesis is composed of three separate studies aimed at understanding the SOEs of non-binary people.
The first of three studies recruited …

Advanced Integrative Therapy: Origins, Research, Theory, And Practice, Gregory P. Brown, Elizabeth V. Pace, Tabatha Bird Weaver
Psychiatry & Behavioral Health Faculty Research
Advanced Integrative Therapy (AIT) is a novel therapy grounded in Energy Psychology combined with cognitive and somatic therapy techniques. As more research is being conducted into the efficacy of AIT and other trauma-based therapies, there is a need to define the modality more clearly for researchers, the clinical community, and potential clients. This article aims to discuss the theory behind AIT and its mechanism of action, compare it with other somatic trauma and Energy Psychology techniques, and explore the gap in the available data and knowledge of AIT. Additionally, a case study will be discussed to report on the potential …

Growing Up In Ana’S Shadow, Michaela Cahill, Gail Wronsky
Growing Up In Ana’S Shadow, Michaela Cahill, Gail Wronsky
Honors Thesis
In this collection, the poet explores how her personal struggles with mental health have shaped her development, relationships, experiences, and outlook on life. In poems that display a variety of stylistic forms and poetic techniques, the collection creatively sheds light on taboo topics including eating disorders, OCD, anxiety, and depression. Without making light of the sensitive subject matter, the poems reflect the author’s characteristic humor, self-satire, authenticity, and humility. Through metaphors, symbolism, and allegory, many draw subtle attention to the stigma around therapy, residential rehabilitation, and psychiatric prescriptions, in hopes of raising awareness for mental health treatment and removing the …

Ars, Virtus, Impetus: Gladiatorial Training And Roman Legionaries, Daniel Porter
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
In 105 BCE, the Roman consul Publius Rutilius Rufus employed gladiatorial training for his legionaries. This thesis examines the physiological and psychological consequences of this style of training on the human body in an effort to understand why these particular soldiers were so effective. I used experiential testing alongside primary and secondary source research to examine how this process better prepared Roman troops for engaging in actual combat.
Negotiating Acculturation: A Qualitative Study Of Muslim American Women, Noor N. Tahirkheli
Negotiating Acculturation: A Qualitative Study Of Muslim American Women, Noor N. Tahirkheli
Graduate Doctoral Dissertations
The estimated population of Muslims in the United States ranges from 3 to 7 million (Bukhari, 2003; Pew Research Center, 2017; Strumm, 2003), with an estimated 69-75% of Muslim Americans being 1st or 2nd generation immigrants (defined as those born abroad and those with immigrant parents, respectively), hailing from over 80 countries (Bukhari, 2003; Pew Research Center, 2017). Thus, most Muslims are navigating the complex processes of acculturation, which is the adaptation of behavioral, cognitive, and affective aspects of one’s cultural functioning, which result from consistent contact with different cultural contexts and groups (Driscoll & Wierzbicki, 2012). Research has noted …
Sleep Quality In Undergraduate Students: Examining The Role Of Class Rank And Related Individual Differences, Lauren Yocum, Lauren Yocum
Sleep Quality In Undergraduate Students: Examining The Role Of Class Rank And Related Individual Differences, Lauren Yocum, Lauren Yocum
Honors College Theses
College students are likely to experience stress due to increased responsibilities, more demanding coursework, and maintaining a balance between academics and social life. Indeed, college students are at risk for experiencing clinically-significant depressive and anxiety symptoms, as well as sleep disturbances, likely as a result of these challenges. Although the relationship between these affective variables and college stressors are well-documented, less attention has been given to the factors that may help promote better sleep, with the majority of research documenting the intrinsic bidirectional nature of mood and sleep (e.g., lack of sleep leads to worse mood which further exacerbates sleep …
Barriers To Treatment For Socially Anxious Black American Students In Urban Public Schools, Grace Martin
Barriers To Treatment For Socially Anxious Black American Students In Urban Public Schools, Grace Martin
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
Social anxiety is frequent and debilitating for Black adolescents with associated impairment (La Greca & Stone, 1993; Stein & Kean, 2000; Van Ameringen et al., 2003). Despite its prevalence and severity, Black adolescents are less likely to seek mental health treatment due to systemic and social barriers such as accessibility and social stigma (Bains, 2014; Lindsey et al., 2006; Lindsey et al., 2013). Barriers to seeking treatment, particularly for socially anxious Black adolescents, are mostly absent in the literature and thus require investigation. To understand culturally specific factors related to social anxiety symptoms as well as to investigate perceived barriers …

Perceiving The Poster: How Suspicion Of Motives May Impact Perceptions Of Potential Allies Engaging In Online Activism, Kathrina Z. Durante
Honors Theses
Social media posts signaling support for various social and racial justice movements have emerged as an important aspect of social media use. However, little research has investigated how these posts and the social media users behind them are perceived by members of disadvantaged groups﹘those the messages are presumably intended to “help.” Though the post’s content and poster’s identity are likely important, the primary aim of this study is to investigate an individual difference variable in the perceiver, specifically disadvantaged group members’ Suspicion of Motives Index (SOMI) scores, which measure a general tendency to perceive White individuals’ attempts at non-prejudice to …
The Effects Of Positive Anticipation On Optimistic Cognitive Bias And Emotional Resilience In Rats, Megan Hooper
The Effects Of Positive Anticipation On Optimistic Cognitive Bias And Emotional Resilience In Rats, Megan Hooper
Honors Theses
The anticipation of positive events and optimism have been shown to improve health and emotional states in rats and humans. The current study is interested in the impact of positive anticipation on optimistic cognitive bias and emotional resilience, as well as neural markers of resilience. Male (n = 12) and female (n = 12) rats were assigned to either unpredictable positive expectancy response (UPER) training or the control (CON) group (n = 6 per group). Optimism was assessed using an ambiguous cue test (ACT) in which the rats were trained to associate a specific visual pattern with a high-value (Froot …

Death And Vengeance Behind Every Corner: The Great Purge And The Psychology Of Joseph Stalin, Isabella Gurin
Young Historians Conference
Under Joseph Stalin’s rule of the Soviet Union, the Purges, or “repressions” as they are now known in Russia, led to the direct and indirect deaths of an estimated twenty million people through starvation, executions, and forced labor camps. As the uncontested dictator of the Soviet Union for nearly twenty-five years, Stalin made no attempt to gain popular support among his nation but enforced his interpretation of communist-socialist rule by means of unremitting oppression and terror. Why did he utilize such vindictive measures? Was it his absolute aversion to any authority and ruthless insistence on total control at all times? …

Implicit Statistical Learning (ISL) is the mechanism that enables humans to pick up on patterns in the environment. Is ISL being used to acquire word structure or morphology when reading? Do individual differences in ISL influence the ability to acquire word structure? Reading and writing are essential skills, especially in the world today. Still, learning disorders, such as dyslexia, make it difficult for individuals to acquire these much-needed skills. By understanding the role that ISL plays in …
The Influence Of Motivation To Control Prejudice On Facial Processing Flexibility In Individuals Who Identify As Biracial, Chloë Steckart
The Influence Of Motivation To Control Prejudice On Facial Processing Flexibility In Individuals Who Identify As Biracial, Chloë Steckart
Honors Theses
Facial processing is one of the most important and immediate aspects of cognition (Jaeger, 2019; Kovács, 2020). Race is an extremely salient facial processing cue that has immediate and long-term impacts on how we interact with others (Oosterhof & Todorov, 2008; Senholzi & Ito, 2013; Blascovich et al., 2017; Kawakami et al., 2022). Race is a powerful in-group in American contexts, and race cues in facial processing play a part in determining in- and out-group members (Tropp & Wright, 2001; Castano et al., 2002).
We investigated how race impacts the facial processing of individuals who identify as Biracial and whether, …

Associations Between Temperamental Negative Affectivity And Parental Anxiety Across Childhood, Jessica M. Templeton, Tess A. Simpson, Wallace E. Dixon Jr, Chelsea Robertson, Diana Morelen
Appalachian Student Research Forum
Extant research suggests a link between child temperamental negativity and parental anxiety and depression. However, most studies focus on temperamental negativity generally, and over fairly short longitudinal time spans. The present study extended the time span well beyond immediate postnatal infancy and explored associations between specific child temperament dimensions, both positive and negative, and parental psychopathology. We expected positive relationships between temperamental negative affectivity and parental mental health problems, but an inverse relation involving temperamental effortful control. Data were collected on child temperament, and parental anxiety and depression, using a cross-sectional design and anonymous survey methodology across five child age …

Testing Assumptions About Laboratory Protocol Fidelity, Tess A. Simpson, Wallace E. Dixon Jr., Albany Guyer
Appalachian Student Research Forum
A recent focus of our Program for the Study of Infancy is the extent to which lab assistants retain fidelity when implementing experimental protocols. Dixon et al. showed that experimenters’ implementations of some aspects of standardized protocols can be influenced by infants’ temperaments. Ellefson and Oppenheimer further found that procedural deviations reduce effect sizes and lead to heterogeneity of findings. In this project, we evaluated archival videos involving experimenters’ implementations of two elicited imitation tasks, “Feed Bear” and “Make a Rattle.” In both tasks, experimenters were assumed to adhere to a narrative script and procedure, which included familiarizing infants with …

The values of the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) are strongly aligned with developmental literature regarding protective traits for youths. In order to assess the presence of some of these protective traits in its participants, established measures were used to create a descriptive profile of the scouts, staff, and adult leaders attending Scout camp. Results showed that Scouts who were more psychologically engaged and connected to their troop showed more positive protective traits. Additionally, male and female participants did not differ on these traits, reflecting adult …

Achievement Motivation And Body Competence As Predictors For Nonhypnotic Suggestibility, Ethan Cohen
Honors Projects in Applied Psychology
The present study aims to discover relationships between suggestibility and two predictor variables identified as achievement motivation, and body consciousness. The significance of this study is immense in placebo research due to the studied relationship of suggestibility as a predictor for placebo susceptibility. Relationships between both predictor variables and placebo susceptibility have also been established through research, but there remains a gap in the connection between these variables and suggestibility. The present study administered a survey to participants (N=103), using the Shortened Suggestibility Scale (SSS), Body Consciousness Questionnaire (BCQ), and the Achievement Motives Scale (AMS-R) as the measure of suggestibility, …
