Man As He Is: A Review, Arthur Carl Piepkorn, Leonhard C. Wuerffel Nov 1958

Man As He Is: A Review, Arthur Carl Piepkorn, Leonhard C. Wuerffel

Concordia Theological Monthly

The Lutheran pastor who uses a free Monday to hole up with a copy of Graduate Study Number III • of the School for Graduate Studies of Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, is in for an exciting and exhilarating experience. Part of the reason for this lies in the very way the book has come into being. The title page lists no author, and no part of the book was written by one person alone. The subtitle describes it as a symposium - the common end-product of an interplay of minds, in this case the minds of five capable representatives of …

Psychology In Relationship To Theology, Martin L. Maehr

Section XXI: Meaning in the Social Sciences

Psychology is the scientific study of the behavior of organisms, particularly the processes involved in the complex organization of these organisms as individuals. The processes are studied from the analytic biochemical view (overlapping physiology) to the broad view of the effect of group activities on individual behavior (overlapping sociology). [excerpt]

Section X: The Eighteenth Century Enlightenment

Perhaps the chief achievement of the Enlightenment was the creation of the social sciences and the application of these sciences to the problems of human existence. The selections which follow offer a first-hand glimpse of the type of work that Enlightenment thinkers accomplished in the fields of psychology, economics, political science, and ethics. The selections are but fragments of thorough, systematic analyses of the foregoing subjects. However, our primary interest here is to understand some of the important assumptions and conclusions rather than to acquire a detailed knowledge of each of the sciences. The ideas presented may seem oversimplified and …

Section XXI: Meaning in the Social Sciences

Vastly increased research and a sounder technique in history in the nineteenth century had two influences on the social sciences. When an enthusiasm for the records of history was combined with the evolutionary perspective, it often resulted in the search for and the imposition of patterns of development on history in general or on the history of particular subject matters such as economics, politics, morals, or religion. Social scientists looked to history for explanations, in the hope of finding inevitable laws, stages of development, or the forces that moved human society. As historians worked out a critical method for their …

The Concept Of Brahmacarya, Evelyn Vrat

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Contemporary civilization of the western world represents a combination of material development and moral degeneration, Value is measured in 'space' not in 'spirit'. Antecedent to the complications of life with its sufferings) 'fiddlers fees' and disillusionments, how very few realize that true pleasure is not in having, but in being? Fewer still are those whose feelings, thoughts and actions are conscious, aware, self-chosen and self-directed. More often than not, introspection reveals that most are not masters, but the mastered, victims of moods and conflicts...

However, deep dissatisfaction with life as it appears to be and with the individual's adaption to …

This problem is considered by the writer as the central cause in the suffering of mankind everywhere.

A Study Of Selected Characteristics Of Committed Juvenile Delinquents In Omaha, Nebraska, 1955 And 1956, Patrick C. Krell

Student Work

Any study dealing with the human variable is a difficult one. With all of his accomplishments in science and technology, man still remains one of the most unpredictable, least understood beings on this earth. It is the endeavor of this paper to shed a little more light on one aspect of human behavior, namely that of juvenile delinquency.

A Study Of The Relationship Between The Personalities Of Juvenile Delinquents Committed For Burglary, Auto Theft, Robbery In The State Of California, 1953, John Wesley Adams

Student Work

The need for more knowledge and better understanding of the adolescent personality patterns (traits) that lead to juvenile delinquency becomes more and more apparent with the tremendous growth in population and the alarming upswing in juvenile delinquency in the State of California. Attempts to meet this problem which have been taken by the State include the appropriation of larger sums of money, the establishment of the California Youth Authority, the construction of new facilities and the enlargement of present facilities, State authorities, lay and professional people, churches, fraternal and service organizations and community agencies have banded together to cope with …

Involuntary Psychiatry In Nova Scotia: The Review Board Reports (1979-1983) And Recent Proposals For Legislative Change, H Archibald Kaiser

Dalhousie Law Journal

The Nova Scotia Psychiatric Facilities Review Board, appointed under s. 53 of the Hospitals Act1, fulfils many vital functions affecting the treatment and liberty of the patient involuntarily confined in the psychiatric hospitals of the Province.2 Although its proceedings are held in camera,3 the Board fortunately publishes an Annual Report which is tabled in the House of Assembly.4 Neither lay persons aor lawyers are likely to scrutinize these documents and this Comment is intended in part to redress this regrettable disregard as well as to offer some critical remarks. They contain material which will both hearten and disturb the reader, …

A Study Of Factors That Discriminate Between Different Degrees Of Religiousness In People, Stuart W. Omohundro Jun 1955

A Study Of Factors That Discriminate Between Different Degrees Of Religiousness In People, Stuart W. Omohundro

Master's Theses

The first question that will probably confront the reader of this paper will be, what is meant by religiousness, be measured or compared between personalities or groups? The same question has been asked of psychologists about other terms such as intelligence and emotion, either of which could be substituted in the title of this paper and still not make it any clearer. The answers to this question have varied except where operational definitions have been demanded, which, of course, boil down to emotional or intellectual behavior as measured by a given test in relationship to others taking the test. Religiousness …

The Relationship Between Personality Characteristics, As Measured By The California Test Of Personality, And Reading Performance, As Measured By The Gates Primary Reading Test, In A Group Of Second Grade Children, George W. Truka Apr 1955

The Relationship Between Personality Characteristics, As Measured By The California Test Of Personality, And Reading Performance, As Measured By The Gates Primary Reading Test, In A Group Of Second Grade Children, George W. Truka

Student Work

Everyone in close contact with children contributes to their development, and the developmental process seldom appears to be the same in any two children. People are often confused by child behavior resulting from these differences in developmental processes. One of the most interesting aspects of child behavior relates to the seemingly wide individual differences displayed by children in the classroom situation. It would seem reasonable to assume that in a given classroom all children would display classroom performance at about the same grade level. However, contrary to this logic, in a given class, wide differences exist in academic performance and …

Intelligence Of Elementary Level Children Of Differing Socio-Economic Status As Measured By The Davis-Eells Games And The Stanford-Binet, Maria C. Caporale

Student Work

The problem in this study was to determine whether the Davis-Eells Test of General Intelligence or Problem Solving Ability yields scores comparable to those obtained on the Stanford-Binet, form L. It is well known that children of differing cultural backgrounds do not perform equally well on currently used mental ability tests. Allison Davis, Kenneth Eells, and others at the University of Chicago have for some years been working on the construction of a test of mental ability which would minimize the importance of differences in cultural backgrounds. In 1953 the culmination of their efforts, the Davis-Eells Test of General Intelligence …
