The Relation Between Daily Stress And Health., Glenn Neil Jones Jan 1987

The Relation Between Daily Stress And Health., Glenn Neil Jones

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The role of stress in the development and exacerbation of physical symptoms has long been a topic of interest. The present investigation attempted to establish if there is an association between the irritants and demands of everyday life--termed minor stressors--and health. In order to investigate the influence of minor stressors on health, it appears necessary (for a number of reasons discussed in the text) to account for the influence of major life events on health and on minor stressors. Both major and minor stressful events were assessed using two approaches: simple frequency counts, and a subjective weighting approach which attempts …

A Comparison Of Formally Mentored And Unmentored Participants Of A Women's Leadership Training Institute, Margaret Ann Fallon

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A comparison of formally mentored and unmentored participants of a Women's Leadership Institute was made utilizing instruments representing six variables reported in the research literature as outcomes of successful informal mentoring relationships. The six variables included job advancement, creativity, job satisfaction, salary increase, self esteem and social status. The instruments used in an attempt to objectively compare the two groups were the CREE Questionnaire, the Minnesota Questionnaire, the Avila Mentorship Questionnaire, and the Rosenburg Self Esteem Scale. Fifty formally mentored and fifty unmentored subjects were each randomly assigned to predictor profile groups of 30 and validation groups of 20. Discriminate …

Cognitive And Social Desirability Factors In Marital Adjustment For A Sample Of Retired Older Adults, Priscilla B. Wilson Jan 1987

Cognitive And Social Desirability Factors In Marital Adjustment For A Sample Of Retired Older Adults, Priscilla B. Wilson

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This study investigated cognitive components of marital adjustment and the role of social desirability response sets in a sample of retired older adults. It was hypothesized that higher marital adjustment scores would correlate negatively with dysfunctional beliefs concerning marriage. The objectives of the study were to identify which irrational beliefs are related to higher and lower levels of marital adjustment, and to determine the extent to which higher adjustment scores reflect the tendency to respond in a socially desirable manner. The sample consisted of 45 married couples, each partner of which was retired and aged 65 years or older. Assessment …

The Validity Of Rorschach Erlebnistypus As A Measure Of Imagery Types, Donald L. Boswell

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to attempt to validate Rorschach's (1942) hypothesis of a relationship between Imagery types and Rorschach EB, M, Sum weighted C, and what Exner (1986) refers to as EA. In keeping with this purpose, relationships between cognitive style of imaging, vividness of visual imagery, and control of visual imagery and Rorschach EB, M, Sum weighted C, and EA were explored. The sample consisted of 25 males and 35 females attending a midwestern university. Eighteen of the participants were undergraduates and 42 were graduate students. Results indicated no relationship between any of the imagery variables and …

Making The Most Of Volunteer Help: A Handbook For Parents And Teachers, Janet Lynn Bond Dec 1986

Making The Most Of Volunteer Help: A Handbook For Parents And Teachers, Janet Lynn Bond

Graduate Theses

This project is concerned with the importance of parental involvement in children learning to read. Research shows children who view reading as an important and valuable process develop a more positive attitude toward learning to read. Children involved in reading activities at home learn to read earlier and have improved comprehension over children who have no experiences reading in the home. Parent involvement can take place in the home or at school as classroom volunteers. This project contains a volunteer handbook for parents and teachers. Included are characteristics of a volunteer, tips for teachers, suggested activities for the classroom and …

Determinants Of Wage Satisfaction, Clare Gertsch Aug 1986

Determinants Of Wage Satisfaction, Clare Gertsch

Student Work

The role of sensitivity to social comparison information was investigated with regard to perceptions of equity and subsequent satisfaction with pay. Subjects were 64 undergraduate students. A 2 x 2 x 2 factorial design was employed. The three factors were (a) Equity, (b) Adequacy of pay, and (c) Sensitivity to social comparison information. Predicted main effects of equity and adequacy of pay on wage satisfaction were found. A predicted interaction of Equity x Sensitivity to Social Comparison Information was not found. Interpretation of the failure of this prediction focused on the personality scale employed.

The Effect Of Reduced Assessor Inference On The Demonstration Of Convergent And Discriminant Validity In Assessment Center Ratings, Kevin G. Louiselle Aug 1986

The Effect Of Reduced Assessor Inference On The Demonstration Of Convergent And Discriminant Validity In Assessment Center Ratings, Kevin G. Louiselle

Student Work

Consequently, the purpose of the present study was two—fold. First, confirmatory factor analysis was applied to assessor’s post-exercise dimensional ratings in an attempt to obtain a more accurate estimate of the dimensionality underlying these ratings. Second, this study utilized a slight methodological innovation (a behavioral checklist) to ascertain what effect a reduction in the amount of inference required of assessors would have on the demonstration of convergent and discriminant validity in assessment center ratings.

The Effect Of Backward Priming On Word Recognition In Single-Word And Sentence Contexts., Robert R. Peterson Jul 1986

The Effect Of Backward Priming On Word Recognition In Single-Word And Sentence Contexts., Robert R. Peterson

Student Work

Backward priming was investigated under conditions similar to those found in lexical ambiguity research. Subjects received prime-target word pairs which were associated either in a backward direction (BABY-STORK) or bidirectionally (BABY-CRY). The primes were auditorily presented, either in isolation or in a sentence, and subjects made lexical decision or naming responses to the targets, which followed the primes either immediately or after 200 msec. Forward priming was obtained in all conditions. Backward priming occurred with both response tasks, but only when. the prime was an isolated word. For naming only, backward priming decreased over time. The results suggest that the …

Use Of The Analysis Of Variance Model For Investigating Disposition Decisions Of Judges And Probation Officers, William E. Reay Jul 1986

Use Of The Analysis Of Variance Model For Investigating Disposition Decisions Of Judges And Probation Officers, William E. Reay

Student Work

The Analysis of Variance model was used to investigate differential disposition decisions from least restrictive to most restrictive court placement based on juvenile and family characteristics. Eight Juvenile and County Court Judges in Experiment I and 20 State Juvenile Probation Officers in Experiment II judged six behavioral-emotional signs in various combinations of presence or absence. The results were consistent with previous findings that a linear model more than adequately accounts for the variability of the subjects responses. The high interjudge agreement correlations and test-retest reliability estimates strongly suggest that Judges and Probation Officers can render reliable and consistent judgments, and …

The Perceived Credibility Of Masculine, Feminine And Androgynous Women In Middle Management, Priscilla Carpenter Apr 1986

The Perceived Credibility Of Masculine, Feminine And Androgynous Women In Middle Management, Priscilla Carpenter

Student Work

Throughout the literatureon attributes and behaviors for effective female leadership, writers disagree as to which sex-role and sex-characteristics should be emphasized. If a woman behaves according to the stereotype, she is of little value to the organization. However, if the woman is "unfeminine," she is not accepted either. This is due to the in compatibility of a woman's task competence and sexuality (i .e., role conflict). The extent to which women who achieve success using stereotypical masculine behaviors, such as aggressiveness, are viewed more or less favorably than women who use stereotypical feminine behaviors, such as in tuitiveness and sensitivity …

Conditional And Biconditional Interpretations Of If-Then Sentences: The Role Of Content And Context, Nancy Linda Digdon Jan 1986

Conditional And Biconditional Interpretations Of If-Then Sentences: The Role Of Content And Context, Nancy Linda Digdon

Digitized Theses

Three experiments examined content and context effects on the interpretation of if-then sentences as either conditionals or biconditionals. In Experiment 1, participants were from four grade levels, ranging from kindergarten to grade 12. All grade levels gave biconditional interpretations to sentences in which the antecedent was necessary to the consequent but gave conditional interpretations to sentences in which the antecedent was only sufficient to the consequent. In Experiment 2, subjects were from three grade levels, ranging from grade 4 to university. All grade levels interpreted the same abstract if-then sentences as conditionals in one context but as biconditionals in another …

Ethnic Stereotype Processing And Organization As A Function Of Group Membership, Richard Norbert Lalonde Jan 1986

Ethnic Stereotype Processing And Organization As A Function Of Group Membership, Richard Norbert Lalonde

Digitized Theses

Two studies examined the categorization function of stereotypes and differences in ethnic information processing as a function of group membership. The relationships of attitudes, contact, and information with stereotyping also were studied. A first study examined the responses of 91 subjects to an ingroup label (English Canadians), two outgroup labels (French Canadians and Americans), and no-information label (Pireneans), and a high relevance label (Myself). The second study assessed the stereotypes of 40 Canadians, 40 Chinese regarding five ethnic labels: Canadians, Chinese, Americans, Filipinos, and Mexicans. Response latencies to stereotypic items were compared to response latencies of non-stereotypic items to examine …

Using Relative Velocity As A Natural Constraint For The Motion Correspondence Problem, Michael Robert Dawson Jan 1986

Using Relative Velocity As A Natural Constraint For The Motion Correspondence Problem, Michael Robert Dawson

Digitized Theses

This thesis examines how the visual system solves the motion correspondence problem. In four related experiments, subjects indicated the perceived direction of movement of an element that could, for a single display, be seen to move either to the left or to the right. It was found that thresholds for this direction detection task could be influenced by the presence of an unambiguously moving context. In general, there was a tendency to see the test element move in the same direction as the context. These results indicate that when the visual system solves the motion correspondence problem, interdependencies between the …

The Role Of The Descending Tectal Efferents In The Visuomotor Behaviour Of The Mongolian Gerbil: Evidence For Functional Specificity Of Crossed And Uncrossed Pathways, Colin Godfrey Ellard Jan 1986

The Role Of The Descending Tectal Efferents In The Visuomotor Behaviour Of The Mongolian Gerbil: Evidence For Functional Specificity Of Crossed And Uncrossed Pathways, Colin Godfrey Ellard

Digitized Theses

The purpose of this thesis was to examine the functional organization of the descending tectal efferents in the Mongolian gerbil. In amphibia, such investigations have revealed that crossed outputs mediate prey orienting turns, while uncrossed efferents mediate visually elicited escape. Most previous investigations of the mammalian collicular efferents have focussed upon movements of the eyes. Although it is true that such movements are of paramount importance to animals such as primates, other types of movements should not be neglected since they form an important part of any animal's visuomotor repertoire.;In the first experiment, electrical stimulation of the superior colliculus was …

Student Characteristics And Student Evaluations Of College Teaching: A Within-Class Analysis, Stephen William Erdle Jan 1986

Student Characteristics And Student Evaluations Of College Teaching: A Within-Class Analysis, Stephen William Erdle

Digitized Theses

Research examining the relation between student characteristics and individual student evaluations of college teaching has often pooled data across classes, thereby mixing between- and within-class variability and allowing the possibility of obscuring differential within-class relationships. To avoid these difficulties, the present study examined associations between student characteristics and evaluations of teaching within separate classes. Each of 278 students from six undergraduate classes completed a questionnaire assessing perceptions of instructional effectiveness and teacher personality, as well as their own personality, interest in the course, gender, university level, grades, perceptions of amount learned, likelihood of future course enrollment, and attitude toward university …

Mood, Attitudes, And Memory, Joan Ellen Finegan Jan 1986

Mood, Attitudes, And Memory, Joan Ellen Finegan

Digitized Theses

In the first two studies, subjects were induced into a positive, negative or neutral mood using the Velten mood induction procedure, and then exposed to information about an attitude object they knew little about. According to Bower's mood-congruity hypothesis, subjects in a good mood should remember more of the positive information, whereas subjects in a negative mood should remember more of the negative information. Because of this differential recall of material, subjects in a good mood should form a more favourable attitude than subjects in a negative mood. The material that subjects remembered did not conform to these predictions. Still, …

The Effects Of Depression And Elation On Recognition Memory, Liora Lurie Jan 1986

The Effects Of Depression And Elation On Recognition Memory, Liora Lurie

Digitized Theses

Two questions were addressed in this research. The first question was whether the effects of depression and elation on memory are symmetric or asymmetric. The second question was which of three depression models is supported by the specific symmetric or asymmetric results. The three depression models compared were: the negative bias model, the depressed realism model, and the positive deficit model. To this end a measure of well-being to complement the Beck Depression Inventory (Beck, Ward, Mendelson, Mock & Erbaugh, 1961) was first created. The well-being measure was found to be reliable in Study 1, in a group of 29 …

Effects Of Improvement Size On Contentment, Aspiration Level, Perceived Strength, Perceived Conflict, And Instrumental Action Escalation, Nora Maria Simkus Jan 1986

Effects Of Improvement Size On Contentment, Aspiration Level, Perceived Strength, Perceived Conflict, And Instrumental Action Escalation, Nora Maria Simkus

Digitized Theses

This dissertation investigated whether improvement can sometimes increase the likelihood that the recipient will use increasingly more coercive actions to attempt to obtain further improvement from the giver. It also investigated how it would do so. The source of the research question was a paradoxical real-life phenomenon, that of improvement sometimes preceding such extreme actions as revolutions and strikes.;Two studies were performed in which subjects worked on tasks, received pay from a fictitious manager, and communicated with the manager about the pay. In study 1, there was evidence that large and small improvement increased contentment and decreased perceived strength. Their …

Subjective Risk Assessment: A Psychometric Decomposition Of Cognitive And Personality Factors Influencing Human Judgments Of Risk, Ross Gordon Stockwell Jan 1986

Subjective Risk Assessment: A Psychometric Decomposition Of Cognitive And Personality Factors Influencing Human Judgments Of Risk, Ross Gordon Stockwell

Digitized Theses

The primary objectives of the current investigation were to: (a) examine the structure of subjective health risk perception in terms of some major variables (representativeness, availability, distress), hypothesized as influencing judgments of probability and severity of consequences; (b) determine the effects of anchoring (low, middle, high), referencing (self, other), and response format (frequency, analogue), conditions on the invariance of risk ratings; and (c) explore the degree to which personality factors (health concern, hypochondriasis), contribute to judgments of health risk. The stimuli used were 55 physical symptoms. A total of 500 subjects participated in this study. A threshold model of responding …

Size And Complexity As Stimulus Characteristics Effecting Choice Behaviors On A Learning Task In Young Children, Kristia A. Stout Jan 1986

Size And Complexity As Stimulus Characteristics Effecting Choice Behaviors On A Learning Task In Young Children, Kristia A. Stout

Honors Capstones

The study examines the effects of the qualitative factors size and complexity of stimulus objects on preschool and first grade children on a learning task. Choice behavior is looked at with regards to initial choice (with the eyes) and final choice (with the hands). Other variables included in the analysis are long-term novelty and proportion of looks towards the rewarded object as a function of positive (choosing the rewarded object) and negative (choosing the unrewarded) choice outcomes. The results showed that first grade children are better at utilizing stimulus characteristics to aid their choice behavior, and further, that the specific …

Follower Incremental Compliance As A Function Of Leader Self-Monitoring Skills And Leader Situational Control (Discretion)., Tanya Cheer Clemons Jan 1986

Follower Incremental Compliance As A Function Of Leader Self-Monitoring Skills And Leader Situational Control (Discretion)., Tanya Cheer Clemons

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study examines the moderating effects of two task variables--task structure and leader discretion--on the relationship between leader self-monitoring and the organizational outcomes of subordinate satisfaction, commitment, and job performance. It was hypothesized that task structure would be a negative moderator of the leadership-organizational outcomes relationships, whereas leader discretion would be a positive moderator. That is, leader self-monitoring would be significantly correlated with measures of subordinate satisfaction, commitment, and job performance when task structure was low and leader discretion was high. Data were collected from 58 upper-middle level managers of a large chemical processing plant, their 58 immediate superiors, and …

Moral Evaluation: An Investigation Of Developmental Patterns In The Use Of Cognitive Algebra (Information Integration)., Anthony Herman Speier Jr Jan 1986

Moral Evaluation: An Investigation Of Developmental Patterns In The Use Of Cognitive Algebra (Information Integration)., Anthony Herman Speier Jr

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Information integration theory suggests that differences in the moral judgments of children and adults is an example of a development process of information integration where younger children employ a unidimensional integration rule, and older children and adults employ multidimensional integration rules. Studies that utilize the information integration approach involve single-episode stories in which two or three levels of intention and consequence story cues are manipulated in a within-subjects factorial design. The present study manipulated two sources of information about the story protagonist, as well as information about his intentions and the consequences. The four variables manipulated were: (a) personal goodness …

Effects Of Job Stress, Coping, And Type A Behavior Among Recently-Graduated Nurses., Brian Andrew Bienn Jan 1986

Effects Of Job Stress, Coping, And Type A Behavior Among Recently-Graduated Nurses., Brian Andrew Bienn

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A model integrating elements of job stress theory, coping theory, and Type A behavior research was developed and tested in the present study. The model was employed to generate numerous hypotheses concerning proposed relations among job stresses, coping strategies, Type A behavior, and stress-related outcomes. These hypotheses were tested utilizing questionnaire data collected from 136 recently-graduated nurses in ten hospitals. As predicted, Type A was positively associated with job stresses, both Type A and job stresses were related to felt strain and organizational commitment, and commitment predicted turnover intention. Hypotheses concerning the proposed moderating effect of coping on the stress-strain …
