Professional Females: Are There Enough Available? Gender Bias Of Female Victims, Debbie Leecock

Modern Psychological Studies

Attributional Perceptions Of Dating Outcomes, Peter D. Ormsby, Thomas D. Green Jan 1998

Attributional Perceptions Of Dating Outcomes, Peter D. Ormsby, Thomas D. Green

Modern Psychological Studies

Attributional responses made by undergraduate college students to interpersonal relationship outcomes were investigated to determine if the actor-observer effect exists in a similar manner for successful and unsuccessful dating situations, or if the effect is mediated by an egoserving bias tendency. Participants rated the influence of the Weinerian Factors of ability, effort, luck and task difficulty on successful and unsuccessful dating outcomes in terms of Self, an Other Male, or an Other Female. Participants attributed a significantly greater amount of internal responsibility to the others as compared to self for unsuccessful dating outcomes but not for successful outcomes. Additionally, participants, …

Hardiness And Job Fitness For The Intensive Family Preservation Specialist: A Correlational Study, Sandi Fisher Jan 1998

Hardiness And Job Fitness For The Intensive Family Preservation Specialist: A Correlational Study, Sandi Fisher

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

It is costly to train the counselors who serve in intensive Family Preservation Services (IFPS). The hiring agency must pay for traveling expenses in addition to any fee paid for training. When an IFPS worker chooses to terminate employment before the end of two years of employment, this puts a strain on an already tight budget. This problem could be alleviated by finding an efficient pre-hire screening instrument. The three personality traits described in Hardiness Theory literature: commitment, challenge, and control, are traits often used to describe the ideal IFPS worker. This study assessed IFPS workers to determine if the …

Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis, I will proceed as follows: my first chapter will be a general overview of epideictic rhetoric, focusing on the limitations of how it has traditionally been viewed and understood by theorists. At the end of that chapter I will establish a working definition of epideictic which extends traditional views about how epideictic can function in certain types of writings, focusing on the important role of the speaker in epideictic rhetoric and how it can work in enabling a community to create a collective identity. In the remainder of the thesis, I will analyze two texts in which …

Gender, Ethnicity And Space: The Case Of Racial Ethnic Minority Women Telecommuters In Omaha, Ne, Hope Kawabata

Student Work

Telecommuting is a labor process in which employees work from home on a regular basis, but maintain contact with the office through telecommunications technology such as computer networks, facsimile machines, voice messaging systems, and so on. Telecommuting has become very popular in recent years; however, little is known about its social and spatial impacts. Preliminary research on gender and telecommuting has shown that telecommuting tends to reinforce a traditional division of domestic labor and identification of women with the home; however, whether this is the case for ethnic minority women is unknown. This thesis research used in-depth, semistructured interviews to …

Cognitive Maps Assess News Viewer Ethical Sensitivity, Rebecca A. Lind, David L. Rarick, Tammy T. Swenson-Lepper

Communication Studies Faculty Works

Ethical sensitivity is investigated in an illustrative analysis of two female television news viewers. Transcripts of structured, in-depth interviews were analyzed according to four critical content dimensions of ethical sensitivity reflecting interviewees' mentions of story characteristics, ethical issues, consequences, and stakeholders. Cognitive maps illustrate the reasoning processes of the two viewers, one with relatively high and the other with relatively low ethical sensitivity. This study provides a detailed description of a new application of a research procedure, and gives detailed examples of how subdimensions of ethical sensitivity interact and relate to a person's reasoning processes. The study is a pilot …

Gender Differences In Learning Styles Of 5th, 8th, And 11th Grade Students, Leigh Zimmerman Sep 1997

Gender Differences In Learning Styles Of 5th, 8th, And 11th Grade Students, Leigh Zimmerman

Theses

Students differ in the way they approach learning and how they prefer to learn new material. Student learning characteristics have been identified as a student7 s learning style. This study examined: 1) differences in learning style between males and females, and 2) consistency of learning style similarities and differences between males and females at three grade levels. Males and females in grades 5, 8, and 11 completed the Canfield Learning Styles Inventory (Canfield and Knight, 1988), a 30 item questionnaire which assesses student preferences for different learning Conditions, Modes, and Areas of Interest. Student responses to 16 scales were compared …

School Psychologists must be the leaders in creating and implementing crisis intervention plans in the schools. The following project contains a literature review of crisis intervention, and a detailed crisis intervention plan for a small, rural district …

The Predictive Validity Of The Bender-Gestalt Test Emotional Indicators, Jeffrey Torch Aug 1997

The Predictive Validity Of The Bender-Gestalt Test Emotional Indicators, Jeffrey Torch

Theses

Although clinical reports of the predictive validity of the Emotional Indicators (El's) of the Bender-Gestalt Test (BGT) have been presented, objective research supporting these claims have been limited. This study investigated the validity of the El's on the BGT in predicting maladaptive behaviors of 23 elementary school children referred for psychoeducational evaluation. Several of the El's were related to the behavior factors of the Devereux Elementary School Behavior Rating Scale (DESBRS). Although projective implications of some El's were supported by their regression on DESBRS factors, few strong relationships were found. Implications and suggestions for future research will be discussed.

Representations Of Unattended Stimuli In Learning Disabled Children: Concrete Or Abstract, Elizabeth J. Carey Aug 1997

Representations Of Unattended Stimuli In Learning Disabled Children: Concrete Or Abstract, Elizabeth J. Carey

Student Work

Studies of repetition priming show that learning disabled (LD) children use more concrete representations of information than non-learning disabled (NLD) children (Brown, Lorsbach, & Carey, 1993; Cermak, 1983). The present study examined whether changes in surface form and spatial location in a negative priming paradigm affect inhibitory processes of LD and NLD children differently.

Assessment Of Aggression In Children: The Use Of Human Figure Drawings, Jennifer Underwood

Theses

The purpose of this study was to assess the validity of six characteristics of drawings cited in the literature as indicators of aggression. The study was designed to compare the drawings of students to their rated behavior on the Aggression sub-scale of the Child Behavior Checklist-Youth Self Report form. It was hypothesized, based upon past research, that students who rated their behavior as aggressive would demonstrate a significant number of the aggressive characteristics in their drawings. One-hundred seventy, eighth grade students participated in this study by completing the checklist and drawing a person. The results obtained did not support the …

The Relationship Between Specified Dispositional And Cognitive Variables And Aids Related Health Behaviors, Robert Joseph Pellegrino

Doctoral Dissertations

The research presented here provides evidence for the use of dispositional psychological states within the Ordered Protection Motivation model. Specifically, the use of dispositional variables is supported when the threat is one related to health (such as AIDS). The study examined a sample of undergraduate students from Louisiana Tech University. Regression was used to determine if four dispositional variables (Health Locus of Control, Sexual Locus of Control, Narcissism, and Sociosexual Orientation) added explanatory power to the ordered protection motivation model.

This study is of particular interest to marketers who produce public service announcements. The objective of any public service campaign …
