A Choice-Based Art Curriculum For Eighth Graders At A Public Charter School, Elisa Hirvonen
A Choice-Based Art Curriculum For Eighth Graders At A Public Charter School, Elisa Hirvonen
Graduate Student Independent Studies
In a choice-based art curriculum students select units of study, explore ideas, and choose specific elements of their projects to develop, e.g., media. The goal is to provide a more authentic artistic experience. Surveys conducted at the beginning and end of the year-long program indicate that students are enthusiastic about choice, and that attitudes towards art improved.
Temperament, Distraction, And Learning In Toddlerhood, Wallace E. Dixon Jr., Brenda J. Salley, Andrea D. Clements
Temperament, Distraction, And Learning In Toddlerhood, Wallace E. Dixon Jr., Brenda J. Salley, Andrea D. Clements
ETSU Faculty Works
The word- and nonword-learning abilities of toddlers were tested under various conditions of environmental distraction, and evaluated with respect to children's temperamental attentional focus. Thirty-nine children and their mothers visited the lab at child age 21-months, where children were exposed to fast-mapping word-learning trials and nonlinguistic sequential learning trials. It was found that both word- and nonword-learning were adversely affected by the presentation of environmental distractions. But it was also found that the effect of the distractions sometimes depended on children's level of attentional focus. Specifically, children high in attentional focus were less affected by environmental distractions than children low …
Market Orientation And Order Of Entry Strategies: An Empirical Analysis, Anshu Saran
Market Orientation And Order Of Entry Strategies: An Empirical Analysis, Anshu Saran
Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
While the relationship between market orientation and business performance has been extensively investigated, the mechanisms by which market orientation contributes to performance are still not well understood. To fill this gap in knowledge of how order of entry would affect the relationship between market orientation and performance, this research provides a conceptual framework to link two disparate concepts, or research streams in the marketing/business strategy literature, market orientation and order of entry.
Timing of entry has generated great attention (Green, Barclay, and Ryans 1995). Pioneering new markets is expensive and risky, but also potentially very rewarding. If pioneers have advantages …
A Comparison Of Analog And Applied Setting Research Methods In Evaluating Motivational Distortion, Steven Verstraete
A Comparison Of Analog And Applied Setting Research Methods In Evaluating Motivational Distortion, Steven Verstraete
Theses
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the appropriateness of analog research designs in the assessment of motivational distortion. The responses of analog experimental groups instructed to fake-good (analog, n = 22) or respond honestly (classroom, n = 22) on the Sixteen Personality Factor (16PF) 5th Edition were compared to the responses obtained from a group of applicants to a graduate program in school psychology (applicant, n = 38). Results indicate a consistent pattern of increasing score desirability across groups, from classroom, to applicant, to analog, with significant differences (p<.002) between groups. Thus, the applicability of analog research findings to applied settings is called into question and Cattell's (1968,1986) trait-view theory is supported.

Medical Model Influence In Counseling And Psychotherapy: Counseling Psychology Training Directors' Views, Dallas R. Jensen
Medical Model Influence In Counseling And Psychotherapy: Counseling Psychology Training Directors' Views, Dallas R. Jensen
Theses and Dissertations
The practice of counseling and psychotherapy is influenced by a number of ideologies, models, and paradigms. Among these, the medical model's influence is particularly salient. The ideology of the medical field pervades the theory, research, and practice of psychology and its influence deserves close examination. The few studies in this area that have been conducted are descriptive and basic in nature. The present study aimed to contribute richness and depth to conversations about medical model influence. By interviewing Counseling Psychology training directors and applying a qualitative analysis, this study provided the following themes that characterize views of the medical model's …
Language Acquisition And Cognitive Development, Veronica Regueiro
Language Acquisition And Cognitive Development, Veronica Regueiro
Whittier Scholars Program
Language is one of the attributes which set human beings apart from all other creatures. Although it can be argued that some animals , such as apes, exhibit a kind of language, the “language” used by animals and the thought of animals stem from different roots and also develop along different lines. The way animals think is in no way related to their language. Animal language functions apart from animal intellect. His project focuses on the relationship between language acquisition and cognitive development. It analyzes and cohesively explains the research done in the field, and any progress made in determining …

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
The study examined the changes in behavioral repetitive/stereotypies based on parent implementation and non-implementation in the Developmental, Individual-Difference, Relationship-Based (DIR) program designed for children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). An experimental, 2x2 repeated measures analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to measure the changes in behavioral repetitive/stereotypies such as: rocking or other whole body movements, hand-flapping, ritualism, finger/light stimulation, aggressive behavior to self, and aggressive behavior to others, based on parent implementation or non-implementation of the DIR program. Nine participants were randomly selected and assigned to a DIR treatment group and a control group. The study was conducted over …
Early-Onset Bipolar Disorder: The Relationship Between Symptoms And Family Functioning, Meryl Yoches
Early-Onset Bipolar Disorder: The Relationship Between Symptoms And Family Functioning, Meryl Yoches
Psychology Honors Papers
The incidence, course, and diagnostic criteria of early-onset bipolar disorder are heavily debated within the psychological community. Although new research has solved some of the uncertainties about the disorder, questions remain about its course, presentation and specific features in childhood. The goal of this study was to evaluate the relationship between family functioning and symptom presentation. The cases of 406 children diagnosed with bipolar disorder were examined. The statistics suggest that not only are there differences in symptom presentation among bipolar type, sex and age, there are also differences in family functioning.
Gender Differences In Deviancy Training In A Clinical Setting, Stephanie L. Cardoos
Gender Differences In Deviancy Training In A Clinical Setting, Stephanie L. Cardoos
Psychology Honors Papers
Delinquent and aggressive youth are often aggregated in intervention programs for treatment. Aggregation is cost effective and efficient, yet recent research has suggested that youth who are treated together for antisocial behavior may experience negative effects through an informal process called deviancy training. Deviancy training occurs when peers reinforce each other for delinquent or aggressive talk or behavior, and as a result, problem behavior increases. The majority of research on deviancy training has been conducted with boys. This study examined gender differences in peer support for delinquency in a clinical setting, as well as gender differences in treatment effects of …

Children At-Risk For Anxiety: Their Self-Esteem, Somatic Symptoms, And Perceptions Of Parental Support, Maria G. Fraire
Psychology Honors Papers
The present study examined children at risk for anxiety, analyzing their symptoms, self-esteem, and their perception of parental behavior. Data were collected as part of a large anxiety prevention study conducted at the University of Rhode Island. Elementary and middle school children who were identified as at risk for anxiety through an initial assessment were administered a battery of questionnaires, which included measures for anxiety, self-esteem, somatic symptoms, and perceptions of parental behavior. The primary hypothesis was that children at risk for anxiety would demonstrate low levels of self-esteem, especially if they concurrently displayed somatic symptoms and perceived their parental …

High HIV-1 DNA (HIV DNA) levels in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) correlate with HIV-1-associated dementia (HAD) in patients on highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART). If this relationship also exists among HAART-naïve patients, then HIV DNA may be implicated in the pathogenesis of HAD. In this study, we evaluated the relationship between HIV DNA and cognition in subjects naïve to HAART in a neuro AIDS cohort in Bangkok, Thailand. Subjects with and without HAD were recruited and matched for age, gender, education, and CD4 cell count. PBMC and cellular subsets were analyzed for HIV DNA using real-time PCR. The median …

Home Literacy Environments And Emergent Literacy Skills Of English- And Spanish-Speaking Students., Megan M. Stroud
Student Work
Learning to read is a process that begins long before a child enters school. One of the most important things that parents can do to help their children prepare for school is to create home environments that promote literacy. The purpose of the present study was to examine kindergarten student's home literacy environments in relation to their emergent literacy skills. A home literacy environment questionnaire was administered to both English-speaking and Spanish-speaking parents of kindergarten students enrolled in a dual language program. The questionnaire was then compared to data collected on students' emergent literacy skills. Results of the study provide …

Law And Emotion: A Proposed Taxonomy Of An Emerging Field Special Edition, Terry A. Maroney
Law And Emotion: A Proposed Taxonomy Of An Emerging Field Special Edition, Terry A. Maroney
Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications
Many scholars - from fields as diverse as psychology, law, philosophy, and neuroscience - have begun to study the intersection of emotion and law. I describe that scholarship's development; propose that it is organized along six interrelated but theoretically distinct foci; and suggest directions for future research.
The notion that reason and emotion are cleanly separable - and that law admits only of the former - is deeply engrained, though it recently has come under attack. Law and emotion scholarship proceeds from the beliefs that emotion may be specifically studied, that it is relevant to law, and that its legal …

Attitude Accessibility And Education: Students' Reported Attitudes Toward Peers With Disabilities In Parochial And Public Schools., Janet L. Miller
Attitude Accessibility And Education: Students' Reported Attitudes Toward Peers With Disabilities In Parochial And Public Schools., Janet L. Miller
Student Work
Students' attitudes toward peers with disabilities may be influenced by a variety of factors. Two potential factors are curriculum of the school and integration of students with disabilities with nondisabled peers. Inclusion of students with disabilities in the regular classroom will increase experience and exposure. Further, a religious aspect of a curriculum may positively or negatively affect the reported attitudes of students in parochial schools. The purpose of the present study was to describe possible differences in curriculum and students' attitudes toward peers with disabilities in parochial and public schools. Elementary school children from parochial and public schools were interviewed …

Law In The Digital Age: How Visual Communication Technologies Are Transforming The Practice, Theory, And Teaching Of Law, Richard K. Sherwin, Neal Feigenson, Christina Spiesel
ExpressO
Law today has entered the digital age. The way law is practiced – how truth and justice are represented and assessed – is increasingly dependent on what appears on electronic screens in courtrooms, law offices, government agencies, and elsewhere. Practicing lawyers know this and are rapidly adapting to the new era of digital visual rhetoric. Legal theory and education, however, have yet to catch up. This article is the first systematic effort to theorize law's transformation by new visual and multimedia technologies and to set out the changes in legal pedagogy that are needed to prepare law students for practice …

Emotional Intelligence And Leadership Emergence, Gilma Yannet Anderson
Emotional Intelligence And Leadership Emergence, Gilma Yannet Anderson
Theses Digitization Project
The study looked at how emotional intelligence helps leaders meet the needs of their team. In order to be successful, teams need to exist in an environment that is burn-out preventative and fosters creativity. It was hypothesized that leaders would help meet these needs by creating an unthreatening work environment. Data was gathered from 391 individuals working in existing self-managed work teams in private and public sectors. The hypothesized model was tested using a multilevel analysis approach of structural equation modeling. Results indicated that a leader's emotional intelligence predicts a non-threatening work environment for both between and within teams, thus …

The Effects Of Participative Safety And Support For Innovation On Group Creativity, Toshio Murase
Theses Digitization Project
This study examined the effects of Participative Safety (PS) and Support for Innovation (SI) on team creativity. It has been proposed that PS helps develop teamwork processes where members feel comfortable expressing and exchanging their ideas freely and SI makes a team perceive that creativity is valued. The study hypothesized that groups trained on PS score higher on creativity, feel less anxiety, have more cohesiveness, and have higher satisfaction than groups without PS training. The study also hypothesized that groups in the SI condition score higher on originality than groups in the non-SI condition. These climate conditions were created by …

Experimental Control Of Nodality Via Equal Presentations Of Conditional Discriminations In Different Equivalence Protocols Under Speed And No Speed Conditions, Abdulrazaq Imam
Psychology
A within-participant comparison of simple-to-complex, complex-to-simple, and simultaneous protocols was conducted establishing different sets of three 7-member equivalence classes for 4 undergraduate students. The protocols were implemented under either accuracy-only or accuracy-plus-speed conditions while keeping number of presentations of training and testing trials equal. The results partially support previous reports of differential effects on acquisition, with participants completing more blocks in training under the simultaneous than the complex-to-simple and the simple-to-complex protocols. Across the protocols, however, the number of trials completed to criterion did not vary systematically. More important, response speed and accuracy did not decrease as a function of …

Coping And Emotional Intelligence In Women With A History Of Eating Disordered Behavior, Charlene Boyd
McNair Scholars Journal
Eating disorders pose a serious problem in our society. Studies have found that there is a negative correlation between eating disorders and emotional coping mechanisms, a factor of emotional intelligence (EI). This study was designed to discover if women who have a history of eating disorders resemble women who report no current or past history of eating disorders and women with current eating problems. Participants included 157 college females. It was found that women who reported a history of eating problems resembled the control group on most measures.
Serotonergic Involvement In The Behavioral Depression Produced By Intermittent Swim Stress, John Paul Christianson
Serotonergic Involvement In The Behavioral Depression Produced By Intermittent Swim Stress, John Paul Christianson
Doctoral Dissertations
Exposure to uncontrollable stress produces a behavioral syndrome that is often described as "behavioral depression" in the rat. Current paradigms for inducing behavioral depression utilize continuous swimming or intermittent electric shock stress. Brown et al., developed a novel strategy that combined these stressors to produce the intermittent swim stress (ISS) protocol. The purpose of this thesis was to define the behavioral outcomes of ISS that resemble behavioral depression and to begin neurochemical characterization of the phenomenon.
Two hallmark features of behavioral depression are immobility, as determined in a Forced Swim Test (FST) and escape learning deficits, as determined by operant …
