Give Me Some Space: How Is Nonverbal Behavior Influenced By Gender And Weight?, Kasey Morgan Lobo
Give Me Some Space: How Is Nonverbal Behavior Influenced By Gender And Weight?, Kasey Morgan Lobo
COLA Research and Creativity Conference
Weight stigma exists in society and social interactions, as smaller individuals tend to avoid close proximity to larger individuals (Puhl & Brownell, 2001). The current study aimed to investigate if personal distance in public settings was directly influenced by gender and weight. There were two general hypotheses for the present work. First, it was predicted that individuals would stand closer to those who were moderately similar in terms of weight than those who were completely similar in both gender and weight, moderately similar in gender, or completely dissimilar. Second, it was predicted that individuals would stand closer to smaller women, …

How Big Is Your Bubble? Effects Of Race And Gender On Personal Space, Alicia T. Pelfrey
COLA Research and Creativity Conference
When individuals interact in a public setting, non-verbal behavior may demonstrate preferences or biases toward others. For example, research suggests that women only need to flash a smile to appear non-threatening to others in public settings (Hall, 1993). Furthermore, Blacks may experience prejudice through non-verbal behavior in interracial interactions (Dovidio, Kawakani, & Gaertner, 2002). The present research sought to investigate non-verbal behavior in terms of gender and race. Specifically, 120 individuals were observed as they stood in line at various locations in Huntington, West Virginia. The distance between individuals was estimated and recorded. There were two hypotheses for the present …

In the United States it is estimated that 1.4 million adults are transgender (Flores, Herman, Gates, & Brown, 2016), and West Virginia leads the country with the largest number of teens, 13-17 years of age, who identify as transgender (1.04%; Herman, Flores, Brown, Williams, & Conron, 2017). Many transgender teens are financially cut off by their families (Lambda Legal, 2017), and transgender Americans are four times more likely than the general population to report a household income of less than $10,000 (Center for American Progress, 2015). This is especially concerning because 87% of transgender individuals report having completed at least …

A prevalent problem among teens in West Virginia is a lack of accurate and comprehensive sex education. Among girls and women 15-19 years of age, teen pregnancy rates are 24.2 per 1,000 girls nationally and 31.9 per 1,000 girls in West Virginia (The National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy, 2017). In the same age group, 4 out of 10 girls and women report that they do not use condoms during sex (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2014), and the rate of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) among teens is 1 in 4 (Minnesota Department of Health, 2015). With …

According to 2015 drug overdose data, West Virginia held the highest rate of drug-related deaths in the country (41.5 per 100,000; CDC, 2016). The concern for drug addiction is particularly high in Cabell County, with approximately 13.78% of the population currently addicted to drugs (Huntington Police Department, 2016). Unfortunately, for many, this problem does not escape expectant mothers. Across the United States in 2013, an estimated seven of every 1,000 live births were diagnosed with neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS; Reuters, 2015). In West Virginia, the rate is five times higher at 37 per 1,000 live births, and the rate within …
What Color Is Your Shirt?: The Effects Of Priming On Rock, Paper, Scissors, John A. Muncy
What Color Is Your Shirt?: The Effects Of Priming On Rock, Paper, Scissors, John A. Muncy
COLA Research and Creativity Conference
Literature on priming suggests that memory consists of a large network of associations. Through everyday experiences, individuals form associations that later facilitate recall. For example, we often pair items that are commonly presented together such as “cat” and “dog” or “bread” and “butter.” If one of these items is presented, it is likely that we will recall the other. Thus, the first item “primes” the association with the second. Priming may impact behaviors, even without conscious awareness of its occurrence (Higgins, Rholes, & Jones, 1977). The purpose of this research is to examine the potential impact of priming on a …

Orphaned at 5 years old after the atomic bomb drop in Hiroshima, she has lived on the streets and managed to scrape by. After collapsing in the street though, soldiers find her and bring her to a hospital that specializes in treating those with sicknesses related to the bombing. Kyushu is quickly losing her sight and the doctors find her condition hard to assess since she refuses to provide information about her past. The American psychiatrist trying to study and help her is also …

Five Seconds To The Ad: How Program-Induced Mood Affects Ad Countdown Effects, Tiffany Venmahavong
Five Seconds To The Ad: How Program-Induced Mood Affects Ad Countdown Effects, Tiffany Venmahavong
Honors Projects in Marketing
The study examines what effects a five second countdown warning will have on consumer’s attitudes towards the advertisement depending on the main program content. This study builds upon several theoretical models concerning program-induced moods in relation to viewer’s judgment to commercial advertisements. Findings from two studies suggest that program-induced mood systematically influences attitude toward the inserted ad with (vs. without) a five-second countdown: for the negative-affect program, attitude toward the ad was more positive when the ad was preceded by the countdown than when the ad was not preceded by the countdown. However, for the positive-affect program, attitude toward the …

Architecture Senior Theses
The place of psychology in architecture has always been a contentious topic. Though the physical environment influences how occupants feel and behave, neither architects nor psychologists have been able to produce environments that can consistently create a desired effect. In this thesis, I have continued to test the legitimacy of systemization in architectural design by using a rigorous survey of potential users. My system is informed by previous experiments, yet also employs the critiques of these systems to inform the rules. It’s theorized the byproduct of this unlikely system should be the “perfect” space for calmness and relaxation.

Write What You Know: The Process Of Writing A Young Adult Novella, Grace Morgan
Honors Projects in English and Cultural Studies
One tragedy, two lives changed forever. This novella follows the paths of two characters coping with the death of loved ones. It examines the themes of grief, friendship, family, self-discovery and inner strength. Specifically, how these things manifest and change after experiencing extreme loss. The dual narrative compares and contrasts the varying ways people react to grief. This project on creative writing followed the writing process from brainstorming to final draft.

The Development And Validation Of An Automatic-Item Generation Measure Of Cognitive Ability, Scott Hines
The Development And Validation Of An Automatic-Item Generation Measure Of Cognitive Ability, Scott Hines
Doctoral Dissertations
Cognitive ability is perhaps the most studied individual difference available to researchers, being measured quickly and effectively while demonstrating a predictable influence on many life outcomes. Historically, the evolution of the psychometric study of cognitive abilities has pivoted on the development of new and better methodologies allowing for a more complete and efficient capture of intellect. For instance, recent advances in computer and Internet technology have largely replaced traditional pencil-and-paper methods, allowing for innovative item development and presentation. However, concerns regarding the potential adverse impact and test security of online measures of cognitive ability, particularly in unproctored situations, are well …

Why Do They Do It? A Case Study Of Factors Influencing Part-Time Faculty To Seek Employment At A Community College, Philip E. Pons, Dana Burnett, Mitchell R. Williams, Tisha M. Paredes
Educational Leadership & Workforce Development Faculty Publications
The purpose of this qualitative study was to discover the motivational factors influencing part-time faculty employment within the community college from the perspective of the part-time faculty. The study examined these reported motivational factors for differences influenced by age, gender, and employment status. A survey was distributed to a random sample of part-time faculty members at a large metropolitan community college in the Southeastern United States. Participants were asked to respond to categorical demographic questions and survey questions to determine workplace satisfaction. Three open-ended questions were presented to obtain in-depth information about the motivational factors leading adjunct faculty to seek …

A Statistical Examination Of Impaired Performances Across Concussion Screening Instruments, Kathryn Ann Ritchie
Master's Theses (2009 -)
It is well documented that healthy individuals routinely obtain impaired scores on neuropsychological tests, which confounds the differential diagnosis process. Relatively little is known regarding the rates at which healthy individuals obtain impaired scores on measures that are used to detect cognitive symptoms associated with sports related concussion (SRC). The current study generated expected rates of impaired performance on the Standardized Assessment of Concussion (SAC), the Automated Neuropsychological Assessment Metrics Sports Battery (ANAM), Immediate Post-Concussion and Cognitive Testing (ImPACT), and Axon Sports (Axon) neurocognitive measures by conducting Monte Carlo analyses using data obtained from a large normative sample of amateur …

Supermarket Savvy: An Analysis Of Psychological Exploitation Within Grocery Stores, Calvin Brinkworth
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
As obesity rates continue to climb around the world, an increased effort is needed to explore all means of prevention and intervention. Although previous research has examined the effectiveness of strategies like nutritional education, little research has been conducted surrounding the interplay of psychology and marketing within the context of grocery stores. As such, this paper examines the presence of psychological manipulation within grocery stores and the influence is has upon product choice, and ultimately consumption. Several key variables have been taken into account for this analysis, including store layout, location, product placement, packaging, and others, to provide a holistic …

From Tactical To Strategic Deception Detection: Application Of Psychological Synthesis, Iain D. Reid, Lynsey F. Gozna, Julian C W Boon
Journal of Strategic Security
Deception detection has ubiquitously focussed upon detecting deceit in the individual, whether in national security, forensic or business-related environments. In contrast an understanding of how to identify deception committed by multiple individuals or groups challenging strategic interests has been neglected. In this article - to enhance understanding of practitioners working across security, intelligence and forensic areas - a process of psychological synthesis is advocated. Psychological synthesis incorporates a multitude of approaches reflecting contextual requirements towards deception detection across verbal/linguistic behavior, non-verbal behavior, online interactions and intelligence analysis approaches. These combined with in-depth understanding of individuals’ cultures, personality and manner of …

Cultural Diversity In Student Ministry Leadership, Steven Zhou
Cultural Diversity In Student Ministry Leadership, Steven Zhou
Seaver College Research And Scholarly Achievement Symposium
In an attempt to contribute to how ministries and Christian academia is addressing issues of diversity, I am conducting a study to analyze correlations between ethnicity and styles/values of leadership. The goal is to uncover whether or not a particular ethnicity generally prefers one style of leadership over another. Past research on the subject has already seen that, in the business world, certain practices work better than others. For example, those from an Asian culture are more likely to prefer formality and authority as opposed to the collaborative and relationship-oriented style of leadership found in America. I will contribute to …
