A little over a year ago the Swiss voters surprised the world with the acceptance of a referendum that added an equal rights amendment to the Swiss Federal Constitution. Is there an explanation for this sudden change of the rather conservative Swiss heart? From the time the Sandinistas seized the National Palace in August 1978 until their victory on July 19, 1979, the Nicaraguan Revolution has brought worldwide attention to Central America that has yet to diminish. The recent events in El Salvador, exacerbated by apparent interference from the young and struggling Sandinista government, as well as a growing awareness by the outside world of the internal agitation in Guatemala, have maintained that attention. Honduras regularly goes through its own political convulsions, and not long ago, Panama was an issue of national controversy in the United States during talks on the canal treaties. …

Pass In Review: Due Process And Judicial Scrutiny Of Classification Decisions Of The Selective Service System, Donald L. Doernberg

The Article suggests a better basis for retaining the requirement that the Selective Service System state reasons for its denial of a registrant's deferment request than the two reasons most often stated: facilitation of administrative decisions and of judicial review. The Selective Service System determines whether a person shall be required involuntarily to serve two years in the military, possibly at the risk of life and limb. Certainly those deprivations are as real and as severe as any to which the due process clause is addressed. In February 1801, Washington, the muddy new capital of the United States, was alive with rumors of approaching conflict over the presidency. Despite a strongly anti-Federalist popular vote, electors were evenly divided between Thomas Jefferson, Republican, and Aaron Burr, so that the choice was thrown into the out-going, Federalist controlled House of Representatives. Plans to have the House rule out Jefferson and Burr in favor of a Federalist stalwart were openly discussed. 1,500 Republicans of Maryland and Virginia were reported to be preparing to descend on Washington to assassinate any man thus chosen. American central cities have long faced problems associated with population losses and deteriorating economies. As middle-class citizens move to the suburbs and as shopping centers and industry join them, the city experiences considerable difficulty raising money to fund the services needed by its growing low-income population. Just as the dwindling middle class produces strains in the city's economy, it also alters and reshapes the contours of the city's politics. This was particularly true of the 1960s since the vast majority of the out-migrants was white and a large proportion of the growing number of low-income city residents was black. Cities …

The purpose of this study was to gain a more complete understanding of Mormon politics in territorial Utah by studying the growth and development of the political process in Summit County to 1882.

The study suggests that the county was governed by a relatively small but growing group of politically minded men, many of whom also ecclesiastical trust or who were among the pioneers of the area. The study also suggests that the Mormon teaching of unity in all things and fair representation among county offices from the county's major population centers were the governing principles of Mormon political action …

President Carter has put draft registration back in place, and college students feel as though it is pointing fingers at them. The students, faculty, and staff are trying to figure out what calendar system to change to. Politics are re-birthed each time the Olympics are held, and where they will be located. Students who believe their rooms are castle like can submit their room number and such to the "Better Homes and Dorm Rooms" competition.
