Sir Clyomon And Sir Clamydes: A Revaluation, Peter T. Hadorn Jan 1991

Sir Clyomon And Sir Clamydes: A Revaluation, Peter T. Hadorn

Quidditas

Long dismissed as an immature play with no intrinsic merit, Sir Clyomon and Sir Clamydes (ca. 1570-1583) quite thoroughly debates issues of contemporary political interest. This essay seeks to restore Clyomon from its undistinguished position in Renaissance studies by showing how it dramatically supports Queen Elizabeth's use of chivalry as an ideology of power and order and criticizes military adventurism. By reading this play as a political text, in this essay I employ the methodologies of New Historicism, which identifies literature as only one of many cultural discourses taking part in the negotiation of power. "Representations of the world in …

The Politics Of Aids: An Analysis Of The Aids Coalition To Unleash Power, Brian Edward Graf Jan 1991

The Politics Of Aids: An Analysis Of The Aids Coalition To Unleash Power, Brian Edward Graf

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Since 1987, the AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power (ACT UP) continues to pressure the government, corporate America, and society into confronting the AIDS epidemic. This work analyzes ACT UP as a movement organization. First, the organizational structure of ACT UP is discussed. All aspects (membership, leadership, revenue, etc) which make ACT UP a truly unique organization are elaborated upon. Second, the tactics and targets of opportunity of ACT UP are analyzed. Some of the groups more notable demonstrations are discussed in order to illustrate the evolution of ACT UP. Finally, ACT UP is analyzed in terms of how influential it …

Confessions Of An Ethics Chairman, Richard H. Underwood Jan 1991

Confessions Of An Ethics Chairman, Richard H. Underwood

Law Faculty Scholarly Articles

This article responds to the critics of state bar ethics committees. Indirectly, it raises some questions about the need, or at least the extent of the need, for yet another law-related cottage industry (the for hire legal ethics consultant). It also provides some friendly advice for those well-meaning types in every jurisdiction who are perennially "reforming" or "energizing" their bar associations and demanding for the "membership" a dazzling new array of services. It discusses practical problems that have gone unmentioned in the limited literature, just as it takes issue with many of the assertions that have been made in that …

The Nowhere Man: When The "Miracle" Turned To Mush, David Nyhan Sep 1990

The Nowhere Man: When The "Miracle" Turned To Mush, David Nyhan

New England Journal of Public Policy

He didn 't steal money, go to jail, become embroiled in a personal scandal, or appoint a pack of thieves to high office, as other Massachusetts politicians have on occasion. But his fall was as dramatic as if he had done any or all of the above. From winning reelection in 1986 with 69 percent ofthe vote, then capturing the Democrats' presidential nomination, his fortunes sank like a stone.

Michael Stanley Dukakis, the stoic son of Greek immigrants, became a figure of ridicule in his third term. Thanks to the regional economy's sharp recession and the lingering effects of the …

Of Persons And Property: The Politics Of Legal Taxonomy, David Cohen, Allan C. Hutchinson May 1990

Of Persons And Property: The Politics Of Legal Taxonomy, David Cohen, Allan C. Hutchinson

Dalhousie Law Journal

To talk of law without politics or history is nonsensical. All lawyers must concede that what they do takes place in historical circumstances and has political consequences. Every piece of law-making and law-application is a governmental act; it relies on political authority and claims binding force. Moreover, all legal activity occurs within a particular historical context; it is intended to respond to or influence a past, existing or anticipated state of affairs. This means that the study of law must concern itself with politics and history generally: it must not confine itself to only the politics and history of law. …

The Current Revolution In Russia, Seweryn Bialer Apr 1990

The Current Revolution In Russia, Seweryn Bialer

BYU Studies

Serweryn Bialer writes of the Russian revolution of 1985 to 1991. He focuses his writings mainly towards the Soviet Union and relates those key events that affect Eastern Europe most. Bialer lays out some frameworks that might be applied to help us understand events: a brief discussion of the ideas presented by Gabriel Almond in his book Crisis, Choice, and Change; and a discussion of the social, political, and economic turmoil that led to the revolution.

Introduction(S) To Men In Feminism, Kristin G. Congdon, Doug Blandy Jan 1990

Introduction(S) To Men In Feminism, Kristin G. Congdon, Doug Blandy

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

In the Spring of 1988 I received a note from Doug Blandy asking if I wanted to co-ordinate a panel on "Men in Feminism" with him. The idea of men working with feminist ideas was not new to our discussions. When we worked together at Bowling Green State University, we often wondered (and indeed frequently laughed) at how gender related the reactions of our faculty and students probably were to our successes and failures. Shortly after I agreed to coordinate this panel with Doug, I attended a conference in the Pennsylvanian mountains in "Women, Art and Society." This was my …

The Role Of The Commission Secretary, David M. Grenville Jan 1990

The Role Of The Commission Secretary, David M. Grenville

Dalhousie Law Journal

Royal commissions of inquiry are generally set up to address an urgent public concern that is almost certainly politically sensitive. The task that they are given to do is not an easy one, and they are expected to deal with it competently, economically and, above all, expeditiously. Inevitably, some controversy will be generated by their activities as they operate under intense public scrutiny. There are, in fact, two kinds of inquiries: one is the quasijudicial investigation which has as its purpose to establish the facts and to determine whether any act was contrary to the law or the public interest, …

Of Persons And Property: The Politics Of Legal Taxonomy, David S. Cohen Jan 1990

Of Persons And Property: The Politics Of Legal Taxonomy, David S. Cohen

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

The essay falls into three major parts. In the first part, we explain and describe what we believe to be the core idea of law - that it represents a discursive and taxonomic economy which is used to give meaning to the world by creating a particular and partial reality. The concepts and language lawyers use, the way those media are deployed, the argumentative devices relied upon, and the values inculcated combine in conscious and unconscious ways to constitute law and a legal style of life. In part two, we tell two stories. One involves the Supreme Court's treatment of …

The Charter Of Rights And The Legalization Of Politics In Canada, H Archibald Kaiser Oct 1989

The Charter Of Rights And The Legalization Of Politics In Canada, H Archibald Kaiser

Dalhousie Law Journal

Prospective readers would be forgiven were they to react in a dismissive manner to yet another book about the Charter. For any contribution in this now over-cultivated field, the question must immediately be asked: "Has the author brought a new vision, a fresh insight to his or her inquiries?" The answer in the case of The Charter of Rights and the Legalization of Politics in Canada is an unhesitant "Yes".

Agenda: Boundaries And Water: Allocation And Use Of A Shared Resource, University Of Colorado Boulder. Natural Resources Law Center Jun 1989

Agenda: Boundaries And Water: Allocation And Use Of A Shared Resource, University Of Colorado Boulder. Natural Resources Law Center

Boundaries and Water: Allocation and Use of a Shared Resource (Summer Conference, June 5-7)

Conference organizers and/or faculty included University of Colorado School of Law professors David H. Getches, Lawrence J. MacDonnell and Charles F. Wilkinson.

Boundaries and Water: Allocation and Use of a Shared Resource is the topic of the Center's annual summer program on water this June. Most of the major rivers in the western United States are shared between two or more states. Often tribal governments play an important role in water allocation and use decisions. International considerations also may be involved in some cases. These interjurisdictional issues extend to groundwater as well as surface water.

This conference will provide the …

Politics In Classical Greece: The Nature Of The Polis And The Origins Of The Rule Of Law, Thomas D. Curran Ph.D. Apr 1989

Politics In Classical Greece: The Nature Of The Polis And The Origins Of The Rule Of Law, Thomas D. Curran Ph.D.

Sacred Heart University Review

Most historians of classical Greece consider the characteristic feature of Greek political life to have been the city-state or polis. Others have cited the fragmentation of the peninsula into a multitude of sovereign states, which tended to vent their tempers at one another rather than to cooperate in the face of a threat to them all, as a significant factor leading to the ultimate collapse of Greek freedom before the might of Alexander the Great in the fourth century, B.C. So cherished was the independence of a typical Greek city-state, and so jealously was it guarded, that the political history …
