Constructing Deseret, Dana Boam
Constructing Deseret, Dana Boam
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Constructing Deseret is an examination of the epistemological assumption that perfect knowledge equals perfect being. It follows my progression as a poet from imitation of Yeats and Shakespeare, and traditional forms, such as sonnet, villanelle and haiku, to the investigation and validation of my own styles and forms. For the early poems the reaching of insight and wisdom is the goal of the poem. Next I look at nature and the world as a source of knowledge and standard of perfection. What follows is a rejection of the pursuit of education/perfection in order to embrace a plain looking at self, …

Parallel Courses: Poetry And Essays, Nicole Anne Freim
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Parallel Courses is a creative work consisting of poetry and personal essays. The writing examines the ontology of the self, discovering and explaining the reality of the self through time and change. The major themes explored include how past experiences enhance and inhibit present relationships, both with the self and with others, and the struggle for identity in both the singular and plural sense within our relationships and lives. The writing searches to find a balance between the ties to one's history and the desires of one's present.

Wittgenstein's Ladder: Poetic Language And The Strangeness Of The Ordinary, Michael Fischer
Wittgenstein's Ladder: Poetic Language And The Strangeness Of The Ordinary, Michael Fischer
English Faculty Research
In a frequently quoted remark from Philosophical Investigations. Wittgenstein comments on our overlooking things because they are familiar, or right in front of us every day: "One is unable to notice something-because it is always before one's eyes" (§129). We take these things for granted instead of appreciating their strangeness. For readers of this journal, one of these familiar things might be the very project of drawing on philosophy while discussing works of literature. Not every critic does this; the New Critics, for instance, hardly ever did. From a certain point of view, turning to philosophy feels forced or odd, …
