Heaven Overland, Jim Murphy Jan 2009

Heaven Overland, Jim Murphy

KSU Press Legacy Project

These poems record, from our own language—spoken on the street in Atlanta or Dayton or Chicago, in the graveyard in Charleston, on the rivers of Ohio or Missouri or Illinois, on the road in Mississippi, or on the radio anywhere in America—momentary beauties, to show us that song, however rare, proceeds from the common tongue. So these poems promise that any speech, that any mouth, might be an occasion for beauty or blessing.

Everywhere in this collection, ears, eyes, minds open to discover new abundance in landscapes thought familiar. These poems discover in America and its history boundless vistas, to …

Death In Germany: Original Artwork And Historic Texts In Conversation, Lidia Cara

Theses & ETDs

Der Ackermann aus Böhmen (c. 1400) by Johannes von Tepl presents a debate between Death and a widower, Heinrich Heine's dark poem "Morphine" (c. 1850) invokes Thanatos, and in "Mann und Frau gehen durch die Krebsbaracke" (1912) Gottfried Benn describes female cancer patients in detached, clinical terms. These changing attitudes towards death in German literature correspond to developments in personal expression in the visual arts. My project engages in a conversation with these writings through my own artwork, giving agency to the dying and using conventions contemporary to each text: fifteenth-century woodcuts, Romantic drawings, and Expressionist prints.

Film-Poetry Synthesis And The Birth Of Experimental Cinema In France, Scott Ross Jan 2009

Film-Poetry Synthesis And The Birth Of Experimental Cinema In France, Scott Ross

Theses & ETDs

French poet Guillaume Apollinaire’s 1917 lecture “L’Esprit nouveau et les poètes” announced the beginning of the Parisian poets’ sincere engagement with cinema: in the following decade, the French literary community became increasingly involved in the development of film theory and criticism, and France’s young generation of experimental filmmakers began to consider modern poetry as a potential inspiration for their work. Some theorists and filmmakers even proposed the widely interpreted concept of a cinépoème: a cinematic poem. This thesis examines the presence and influence of French poetry in three such cinépoèmes made in the late 1920s. In Emak-Bakia, Man Ray employs …

Roses Are Red, Violets Are Bluehow Poetry In Science Can Help Students Learn Something New, Kimberly Casselman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study was an attempt to examine how poetry integrated with science could assist eighth graders in the memorization of key science vocabulary words. Furthermore, it would investigate if student attitude, interest, and motivation would improve with the use of the poetry. Instruction was adjusted to implement poetry into astronomy lessons. Memorization activities such as poems, chanting, and repetition were used to help students remember the vocabulary and the definitions. Pre/post tests were used to interpret if the poetry did assist in the memorization of the astronomy vocabulary. Science interest surveys and science attitude surveys were used to interpret if …
