Archives Of Transnational Modernism: Lost Networks Of Art And Activism, Anne Donlon
Archives Of Transnational Modernism: Lost Networks Of Art And Activism, Anne Donlon
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Archives Of Transnational Modernism: Lost Networks Of Art And Activism considers the work of several intersecting figures in transnational modernism, in order to reassess the contours of race and gender in anglophone literature of the interwar period in the U.S. and Europe. Writers and organizers experimented with literary form and print culture to build and maintain networks of internationalism. This dissertation begins to suggest some of these maps of connection, paying particular attention to people who played key roles as hubs within networks. British radical Sylvia Pankhurst's 1920s publications, which have not been much considered in terms of literary contribution, …

Land Whisperings: Poems And Palimpsests, Glen Phillips
ECU Books
Most of the poems in this book were included in the poetry section of my PhD in Creative Writing in 2006 under the title of “Land Whisperings: a Poetics of Newplace and Birthplace”. A theme of the thesis was ‘palimpsest’ the rendering of a new work over the top of an older one. Some of the poems therefore take skeletal forms from well-known British and Australian poems yet are new poems created upon the old. The poems also evoke my memories and experiences of my homeland, particularly the Wheatbelt of Western Australia but also landscapes of Italy and China in …

La Obra Poetica De Jose De Jesus Dominguez Estudio Preliminar, Texto Y Notas, Eric Samuel Quinones
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The end of the nineteenth century witnessed an esthetic renewal in Latin American literature. The movement later dubbed modernismo would usher in a profound shift in the ars poetica of Spanish prose and poetry. Yet this revolution did not spread like fire; it coexisted with, and unevenly replaced, earlier artistic notions. José de Jesús Domínguez, a poet and medical doctor who spent most of his life in the city of Mayagüez, Puerto Rico, was one of the earliest exponents of this trend. His evolution from his beginnings as a romantic poet, his encounter with the French Parnassians, and his early …

Shame In The Fabliaux, Scott Brown
Shame In The Fabliaux, Scott Brown
Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs
In this thesis I highlight the literary techniques used in fabliaux to understand the power struggles traversed by the characters. This work focuses on methods of avoiding the shame emasculation in scenes from the fabliaux Berangier au lonc Cul, Du Prestre qui fu mis au lardier, Du Prestre crucefié and De la Saineresse. A fabliau is an amusing short story in poetic form, originally performed by troubadours and trouvères. This form is most present in manuscript examples from the 12th to the 14th century. The stories involve simple characters, word play and idiomatic expressions. I argue that literary mechanisms are …

Psalms For Skeptics (101-150), Kent L. Gramm
Gettysburg College Faculty Books
Sparked by phrases from the book of Psalms, these poems question and occasionally affirm our everyday ideas about life, mortality, the afterlife, God, family, and belief. In vigorous contemporary language—complaining, lamenting, and wisecracking on everything from Job's wife to baseball, crows to angels, circus elephants to Mary Magdalene—but in traditional form, these sonnets, or little songs, "speak what we feel, not what we ought to say." Journal of Undergraduate Research at Minnesota State University, Mankato
Amanda Nigon’s two poems (see)Shell Cracked on Rocks by Gulls and Fistula were written as part of a creative writing group using the theme of Losing Innocence. LOSING INNOCENCE by Alison Broderson, Andrea Bruton, Eric Groonwald, Amy Herron, Eric Hoffeiser Josephine Jarvis, Joe Loweth, Amanda Nigon, Jenny Sodomka: This project was inspired by our group’s desire to heighten its social awareness as it explored the loss of innocence resulting from impoverishment. As creative writers we chose to explore this theme through poetry, fiction, and creative non-fiction--our subjects ranging from working in a women’s shelter to college life. Because the process …
William Blake: The Misunderstood Artist Of The 19th Century, Jeannie Campe
William Blake: The Misunderstood Artist Of The 19th Century, Jeannie Campe
Journal of Undergraduate Research at Minnesota State University, Mankato
The purpose of this project is to examine the artistic vision of William Blake as well as his impact on literature. William Blake was one of the most misunderstood artists of his time, which led to a life of isolation and poverty. Determined to follow his “Divine Image,” Blake remained unappreciated until his twilight years, although he was still virtually unknown except for a small group of followers. William Blake is important today because of his innovative work stemming from his frustration with standard poetic tradition and techniques. This project explores Blake’s collection of poems entitled Songs of Innocence and …

Poems, Eric Hoffheiser
Journal of Undergraduate Research at Minnesota State University, Mankato
Eric Hoffheiser's two poems View from Ubehebe Peak and How to get Rid of Sorrow were written as part of a creative writing group using the theme of Moving On. For our group, Moving On represented the emotional weight in fiction, nonfiction, and poetry. Moving On implies change, and all good prose and verse possess change. As creative writers, we explored this theme through subjects ranging from the death of a loved one to loss of one’s faith. By focusing on our theme, we examined our own lives and improved our creative writing skills. We attained our goals through observation, …

Poems, Nathan Klein
Journal of Undergraduate Research at Minnesota State University, Mankato
Nathan Klein's poems were written as part of a creative writing group using the theme of Where we Live. For my part of the project I tied in the theme of Where We Live through a series of poems. The aspects of the theme that I based my poems on included interpretations on where we live mentally, spiritually, chronologically, geographically in the universe, and on earth. I used the theme to pinpoint just were it is that we all truly live; even in those areas were a pin has no place.

This Modern Life, Nathan Klein
This Modern Life, Nathan Klein
Journal of Undergraduate Research at Minnesota State University, Mankato
For our project, group members explored the theme This Modern Life in its varied interpretations through fiction, nonfiction, and poetry. For my project, the theme This Modern Life was addressed through poetry. The piece I wrote was influenced by my own personal reflections in relation to what this current life has imprinted into me. As a theme, This Modern Life implies little, it left me open to consider contrasting and comparing with other ages, or simply to describe things as they currently are. Since I do not have first hand experience of what I would consider a past "age", I …

Post Subject: A Fable, Oliver De La Paz
Post Subject: A Fable, Oliver De La Paz
University of Akron Press Publications
Ecstatic and obsessive, the prose poems that make up Oliver de la Paz's Post Subject: A Fable reveal the monuments of a lost country. Through a series of epistles addressed to "Empire" a catalog emerges, where what can be tallied is noted in a ledger, what can be claimed is demarcated, and what has been reaped is elided. The task of deposing the late century is taken up. What's salvaged from the remains is humanity.
Variation Within Uniformity: The English Romantic Sonnet, Thomas Hamilton Cherry
Variation Within Uniformity: The English Romantic Sonnet, Thomas Hamilton Cherry
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The English Romantic poets of the early nineteenth century wrote numerous poems from genres and styles all across the poetic spectrum. From the epics of ancient origin concerning kings and fanciful settings to the political odes on fallen leaders and even the anthropological histories of what it meant to live in their time, these poets stretched their stylistic legs in many ways. One of the most interesting is their use of the short and rule-bound sonnet form that enjoyed a reemergence during their time. Though stylized throughout its existence, the sonnet most often falls into a specific form with guidelines …
