“The Gold Snake / Coiled In The Sun”: George Hitchcock And Kayak Magazine, Brooks Lampe
“The Gold Snake / Coiled In The Sun”: George Hitchcock And Kayak Magazine, Brooks Lampe
Faculty Publications - Department of English
Although George Hitchcock is a minor figure in American literary history, he is one of its most genuinely unique characters and played a vital role in shaping American poetic surrealism. Largely because of Hitchcock’s efforts, Kayak, which ran from 1964-1984 under his editorship, became for many poets the prototype of the small press magazine. Joseph Bednarik writes that “[t]aken in its proper historical perspective, kayak was the vanguard of modern independent presses and George Hitchcock a most daring and perceptive editor” (28). It gathered poets, Philip Levine writes, who were “wild enough to be truly American” but were “underground” because …

Finding Aids
Stanley Kunitz was born in Worcester in 1905 and shortly after college moved away. Beginning in the 1960s, he returned to give poetry readings and to receive honors. Kunitz searched unsuccessfully for his boyhood home on Woodford Street. Then, in 1985, he came to Worcester for the week-long Stanley Kunitz Poetry Festival in honor of his 80th birthday and on the last day of the festival, Kunitz decided to try once more to find the house on Woodford Street. Greg and Carol Stockmal, who had bought the house in 1979, found Kunitz and his entourage standing in front of their …

Poetry And Consciousness, Diana Raab
International Journal of Transpersonal Studies
Poetry is more than words—it is a state in which internal and external worlds come together in awareness and give birth to something more true than what either can reach alone. The author offers two poems along with their context and reflections on the function of poetry.

Reading Of/Writing Through Copy/Paste: An Examination And Practice Of Appropriative Poetry, Taylor Barton
Reading Of/Writing Through Copy/Paste: An Examination And Practice Of Appropriative Poetry, Taylor Barton
Theses & ETDs
This senior project begins with a chronological and theoretical examination of the development of appropriative tactics in poetry and literature over approximately the past one hundred years. Following is a collection of original poetry composed by appropriative means. Following each poem is an examination of the process that brought it about, and a consideration of its theoretical and conceptual implications. I borrowed every word of each poem from preexisting material, reformatted and re-contextualized them, and made them into new works, calling into question traditional notions of authorship, creativity, and originality. I attempted to incorporate experimental, conceptual, procedural appropriation with the …

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS
Prelude:
IN the dense tracts of woodland that stretch south from Esthwaite Water, a young boy pauses amidst a copse of hazel. His chest heaves; his heart races. Brake, bramble, and thorn. Exhaustion and expectation gather in each breath, course through his body and deeper still into his soul. He eyes the trees, fingers the milk-white flowers that hang in clusters, and knows joy. His breathing slows. Leaves murmur in the breeze. His heart fills with kindness. Taking up the crook that lies in the long grass, he swings it wide. Petals fill the air, swirl around him like …
Poetry Inspired By Art, Brenda Crosby
Poetry Inspired By Art, Brenda Crosby
French
The activity is part of an Art, Beauty, and Aesthetics unit. First, students read a short text about the notion of the window, and how looking through a window frames or changes our perspective. Students then read and analyze Charles Baudelaire’s prose poem “Les fenêtres”. Students are provided copies of teacher selected paintings and photographs, each of which features a window. In class, they write any words that the image evokes for them. From this initial writing, they write an original poem inspired by the painting or photo. This activity encourages vocabulary development, close observation of one work of art, …
The Practice And Benefit Of Applying Digital Markup In Preserving Texts And Creating Digital Editions: A Poetical Analysis Of A Blank-Verse Translation Of Virgil's Aeneid, William Dorner
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Numerous examples of the "digital scholarly edition" exist online, and the genre is thriving in terms of interdisciplinary interest as well as support granted by funding agencies. Some editions are dedicated to the collection and representation of the life's work of a single author, others to mass digitization and preservation of centuries' worth of texts. Very few of these examples, however, approach the task of in-text interpretation through visualization. This project describes an approach to digital representation and investigates its potential benefit to scholars of various disciplines. It presents both a digital edition as well as a framework of justification …

Musical And Cultural Significance In Samuel Barber’S “Knoxville: Summer Of 1915”, Danielle E. Kluver
Musical And Cultural Significance In Samuel Barber’S “Knoxville: Summer Of 1915”, Danielle E. Kluver
Undergraduate Research Journal
“We are talking now of summer evenings in Knoxville, Tennessee in the time that I lived there so successfully disguised to myself as a child” (Agee 3). These first words of James Agee’s prose poem “Knoxville: Summer of 1915,” introduce the reader to a world of his youth – rural Tennessee in the early part of the century. Agee’s highly descriptive and lyrical language in phrases such as “these sweet pale streamings in the light out their pallors,” (Agee 5) invites the reader to use all his senses and become enveloped in the inherent music of the language. Is it …
