The Veronica Maneuver, Jennifer Moore Jan 2015

The Veronica Maneuver, Jennifer Moore

University of Akron Press Publications

Jennifer Moore's debut collection takes its title from a bullfighting technique in which the matador draws the bull with his cape; in these poems, however, traditional moves are reconfigured and roles are subverted. In a broader sense, the word "veronica" (from the Latin vera, or "true" and the Greek eikon, or "image") functions as a frame for exploring the nature of visual experience, and underscores a central question: how do we articulate events or emotions that evade clear understanding? In order to do so, the figures here perform all manner of transformations: from vaudeville star to cartoonist's daughter, from patron …

Are Historically Black Colleges And Universities Necessary? It's Not That Black And White, Keara Jones

Master of Liberal Studies Theses

This is a creative thesis about the environment, culture and achievement of HBCUs. This thesis uses spoken word poetry as the creative means to express the past and present issues of HBCUs from a personal perspective. The poetry is supported by contemporary analysis to further add to the conversation about the necessity of HBCUs.

Songs Without Music: The Hymnes Of Le Franc De Pompignan, Theodore E. D. Braun Jan 2015

Songs Without Music: The Hymnes Of Le Franc De Pompignan, Theodore E. D. Braun

Religion in the Age of Enlightenment

In the first edition of his Poesies sacrees (1751), Jean-Jacques Le Franc de Pompignan (1709-1784) published 40 poems in four books, each containing ten poems.1 These Poesies sacrees, or Sacred Poems, were to be printed three times in his Oeuvres choisies or Selected Works of 1753, 1754, and 1754-55. This modest collection was to be enlarged to 85 poems divided into five books of unequal length in its definitive form in the de luxe quarto edition of 1763 and finally as the first volume of his Oeuvres in 1784, which is the text I am using in this …

“The Whole Vexed Question”: Seamus Heaney, Old English And Language Troubles, Una A. Creedon-Carey Jan 2015

“The Whole Vexed Question”: Seamus Heaney, Old English And Language Troubles, Una A. Creedon-Carey

Honors Papers

As an Irish poet writing during the twentieth century, Seamus Heaney is constantly aware of the politics and problems of operating in the English language. My project locates Heaney in a context of writers and theorists who are similarly interested in the politics of language-ownership and the logistics of communication and expression in a major language. I argue that Heaney’s North presents a unique solution to these common language questions, and that the poet’s focus on etymologies and language history makes his escape into linguistic nonaffiliation more feasible than other, more abstract attempts at a borderless, liberated language.
