These poems examine the challenges facing the woman creator, and focus in particular on the problem of the muse, and how this relates to the feminist reconceptualization of traditional notions of gender and sexuality. As part of this broader poetic inquiry, I also challenge traditional notions of monogamy and heterosexual desire.

This project examines ecopoetics as a means of decentering the industrial and urban tropes so heavily focused on in modernist studies. Through the ecopoetics of Muriel Rukeyser (1913-1980) and H.D. (1886-1961), the natural world and its influence on human subjects prove to be as emblematic of modern literature as artificial places and spaces are. While ecocritical theorists like Scott Knickerbocker and Andreas Weber point to the natural world as a paramount guide to navigating social and cultural dynamics, the presence of ecopoetics in modernism is a particularly significant field. Rukeyser’s long poem, The Book of the Dead (1936) puts ecopoetics …

The Central Appalachian coalfields provide a rich culture to the American landscape, often shielded from outsiders to the region. While prevailing stereotypes of the region describe those living there as two-dimensional, the identity of Appalachia has always been complex— whether through the rich history with labor struggles, gender equality, or social progress. Finding one’s identity in a place that has been so strictly held to its stereotypical perceptions can be difficult. As a tripartite collection of poems, at first glance H.D.'s Trilogy appears vastly different from her semi-autobiographical novel, Bid Me to Live, but the two are not as removed from each other as their formats and publication timelines might indicate. With a backdrop of the body and its inner forms, Theory of Care is a collection of poems and lyric excerpts that explores themes of queer sexuality, physical and mental health, etymology, desire, and physicality. It coheres moments of internal reckoning with an exploration of how trauma lives in the body, particularly the queer femme body. By accessing various landscapes including the medical sphere, family dynamics, and the social environments of the South, the collection grapples with different vernaculars to question how the language used to discuss (or dismiss) trauma dramatically alters the perception of those experiences.

In this thesis, I use nontraditional documentary methods to explore the dynamic relationship between mothers and daughters. This work is an amalgamation of autobiography, memoir, autoethnography, oral history, and photography. While autoethnography inspires me, this is not a traditional sociological study, and I do not seek to come to any ubiquitous conclusions. Rather, I present an artistic approach to the field of documentary. I diverge from traditional oral histories, constructing a cohesive narrative using transcripts from recordings of my mom and me. Emergent calls to revise the analytic term transpacific in relation to Indigenous-centered regional formation have emphasized the need to attend to various epistemological and historical distinctions that explain distinct orientations to the Pacific by Indigenous and migrant populations, including diasporic formations. Within these calls, I operationalize poetry, a distinctly aesthetic practice of queer diaspora, as a way of illuminating new forms of relationality that such calls require.
