Embedded Charge Distributions In Electron Irradiated Polymers – Pulsed Electroacoustic Method Reproducibility And Calibration, Zachary Gibson, Jr Dennison, Ryan Hoffmann

Physics Student Research

The pulsed electroacoustic (PEA) method has been used to measure the embedded charge distributions in electron irradiated polymers. The PEA method allows for non-destructive direct measurements of embedded charge distributions in dielectric materials. Samples of polyether-etherketone (PEEK) and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) of 125 μm or 250 μm thickness were tested after irradiation with either a 50 keV or 80 keV electron beam. The reproducibility of the PEA method and the experimental conditions were studied by: (i) measuring each sample multiple times in a given mounting configuration, (ii) re-measuring each sample after repositioning them in the PEA test fixture, and (iii) measuring …

The Development Of Mathematical Methods For Tackling Problems In Non-Perturbative Quantum Field Theory, Cosmology, And Gravity, Daniel Berkowitz Oct 2021

The Development Of Mathematical Methods For Tackling Problems In Non-Perturbative Quantum Field Theory, Cosmology, And Gravity, Daniel Berkowitz

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

We have extended two recently developed theoretical methods, the Quantum Finite Elements (QFE) and the Euclidean-signature semi-classical method (ESSCM). The QFE is a technique for constructing lattice field theories (LFTs) on curved Riemannian manifolds. We extended the applicability of the QFE to formulating LFTs on certain three and four dimensional Riemannian manifolds such as $\mathbb{S}^{3}$ and $\mathbb{R} \cross \mathbb{S}^{3}$. This was done by first constructing a novel simplicial approximation to $\mathbb{S}^{3}$. Then, after correctly computing the weights of the links and vertices that make up this simplicial approximation, we defined a Laplacian on it, whose low lying spectrum was observed …

Ab Initio Insights Into Substrate Effects, Structural Identification, And Excitonic States In 2d Materials, Stephen Eltinge Oct 2021

Ab Initio Insights Into Substrate Effects, Structural Identification, And Excitonic States In 2d Materials, Stephen Eltinge

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

The 21st century has seen enormous growth in the study of two-dimensional (2D) materials, beginning with the isolation of graphene but rapidly expanding to include a wide variety of other compounds. Due to their size, 2D materials have immediate appeal for applications in nanoscale electronics. At the same time, uniquely low-dimensional phenomena such as the quantum spin Hall effect, quantum confinement, and 2D superconductivity are of interest to basic physics researchers. This dissertation presents ab initio investigations of three 2D materials. First, we discuss the binding of stanene on various substrates. Stanene, the buckled monolayer form of tin, is predicted …

Scaling Limits Of Some Random Interface Models., Biltu Dan Dr. Sep 2021

Scaling Limits Of Some Random Interface Models., Biltu Dan Dr.

Doctoral Theses

In this thesis, we study some probabilistic models of random interfaces. Interfaces between different phases have been topic of considerable interest in statistical physics. These interfaces are described by a family of random variables, indexed by the ddimensional integer lattice, which are considered as a height configuration, namely they indicate the height of the interface above a reference hyperplane. The models are defined in terms of an energy function (Hamiltonian), which defines a Gibbs measure on the set of height configurations. More formally, letÏ• = {Ï•x}x∈Z dbe a collection of real numbers indexed by the d-dimensional integer lattice Z d. …

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

The study deals with the analysis of research output by the University of Mumbai from 2001 to 2019. The University has published 3362 articles, out of which 3205 research articles, proceeding articles, and reviews are taken for study. The year-wise distribution shows the highest publications found in 2008 with 260 articles. The study used Domestic Collaboration Index (DCI) and International Collaboration Index (ICI). It shows the highest domestic collaboration in 2011 (112.36) and the highest international collaboration in 2006 (179.15). The study used the specialisation index (SI), and as per SI, the University of Mumbai has specialised in Engineering with …

Advancement In Infrared Optics Through The Exploration Of Solution Derived Arsenic Selenide (As2se3) Thin Films, Annabella Orsini Jul 2021

Advancement In Infrared Optics Through The Exploration Of Solution Derived Arsenic Selenide (As2se3) Thin Films, Annabella Orsini

Physics and Astronomy Summer Fellows

There are great opportunities for advancement in the realm of infrared (IR) optics through the use of chalcogenide glasses (ChGs). The development of IR optics using ChGs is important for applications in search and rescue operations, firefighting efforts, medical imaging, and satellites. Instead of creating bulky, expensive, single crystal IR glasses, ChGs can be deposited as thin films by solution derived (SD) spin or dip coating. Our research takes a multidisciplinary approach to investigate ChGs thin films using physics, chemistry, optics, and materials science.

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

The paper analyses 775 publications by the faculty members in the Department of Physics, University of Calcutta, collected from Scopus database for the period of 19 years (2001-2019). A number of bibliometric indicators e.g. total publications, citations, journal cites score, h-index, year-wise productivity, national and international collaborations, the most preferred and cited journal are employed for analysing the nature of publications. Bibliometric technique and open source software like Publish or Perish and Bibliometrix R Package are used for data analysis. The findings of the study revealed that 775 papers published in 173 journals with 9090 citations. The average citations per …

54fe(D,P)55fe Single Neutron Transfer Presentation, Matthew Quirin, Raymond Saunders

Physics and Astronomy Presentations

During our summer research at the John D Fox Laboratory, we used the 9 MV Tandem van de Graaff accelerator and the Super Enge Split-Pole Spectrograph to make measurements of the neutron transfer reaction 54Fe(d,p) 55Fe to observe and explore excited states of 55Fe and shell structure beyond the magic number N=28. We have created momentum spectra and angular distribution plots of the protons from the reaction which will be analyzed to determine the angular momentum values of states and single-neutron energies in 55Fe in an effort to better understand nuclear structure.

Modernization Of Scienttific Mathematics Formula In Technology, Iwasan D. Kejawa Ed.D, Prof. Iwasan D. Kejawa Ed.D

Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications

Abstract
Is it true that we solve problem using techniques in form of formula? Mathematical formulas can be derived through thinking of a problem or situation. Research has shown that we can create formulas by applying theoretical, technical, and applied knowledge. The knowledge derives from brainstorming and actual experience can be represented by formulas. It is intended that this research article is geared by an audience of average knowledge level of solving mathematics and scientific intricacies. This work details an introductory level of simple, at times complex problems in a mathematical epidermis and computability and solvability in a Computer Science. …

Mechanical Engineering

The San Luis Obispo Botanical Garden (SLOBG) is a non-profit organization that provides a place for visitors to connect with and explore nature. The sponsors from SLOBG sought an interactive physics display to be implemented in their children’s garden that will educate children and adult visitors about physics concepts in a welcoming and comfortable atmosphere. The research done showed that customers are looking for a “wow” factor with the display to surprise and engage them. Patents showed the design and build of interactive playground equipment. Government reports described the curriculum for the target audience and also outlined the safety precautions …
