Braille For Physics, Ediyanto Ediyanto, Thalsa Syahda Aqilah

Journal of ICSAR

The demand for learning media for those who have visual impairments in learning physics is growing. Braille letters that cannot accommodate physics equations and symbols are an impediment that must be addressed promptly. The technique that can be used is, of course, to present a new version of current Braille. The Braille form for Physics in this article is still a work in progress. We are eager to collaborate with professionals in physics and Braille. In addition, as a follow-up, we will consider validating and constructing a Braille physics dictionary utilizing 3x3 Braille forms.

Developing A Data Acquisition System For Use In Cold Neutral Atom Traps, Jonathan E. Fuzaro Alencar

Physics

The rising interest in quantum computing has led to new quantum systems being developed and researched. Among these are trapped neutral atoms which have several desirable features and may be configured and operated on using lasers in an optical lattice. This work describes the development of a new data acquisition system for use in tuning lasers near the precise hyperfine transition frequencies of Rb 87 atoms, a crucial step in the functionality of a neutral atom trap. This improves on previous implementations that were deprecated and limited in laser frequency sweep range. Integration into the experiment was accomplished using an …

Symplectically Integrated Symbolic Regression Of Hamiltonian Dynamical Systems, Daniel Dipietro Jun 2022

Symplectically Integrated Symbolic Regression Of Hamiltonian Dynamical Systems, Daniel Dipietro

Computer Science Senior Theses

Here we present Symplectically Integrated Symbolic Regression (SISR), a novel technique for learning physical governing equations from data. SISR employs a deep symbolic regression approach, using a multi-layer LSTMRNN with mutation to probabilistically sample Hamiltonian symbolic expressions. Using symplectic neural networks, we develop a model-agnostic approach for extracting meaningful physical priors from the data that can be imposed on-the-fly into the RNN output, limiting its search space. Hamiltonians generated by the RNN are optimized and assessed using a fourth-order symplectic integration scheme; prediction performance is used to train the LSTM-RNN to generate increasingly better functions via a risk-seeking policy gradients …

Exploring “Space Engineers”: A Video Game As An Academic Tool For Simulating Physics Laboratory Classes, Liam Ryley G. Bernal, Aljustrel Nino S. Carpio, Lesmon Andres Lenin L. Saluta, Donald G. Xu

DLSU Senior High School Research Congress

As the COVID-19 pandemic has brought the world on hold, schools were forced to close their doors and conduct their classes in an online setup. In the online setup, students do not experience the same interactivity as face-to-face classes. Technology today now offers online simulations that can make up for the lack of interactivity in the online setup. By using a simulation game entitled “Space Engineers”, the study aims to investigate the different possible activities present in Space Engineers that are best in assisting the students in learning certain physics concepts. Through this, learning activities can be designed in the …

It allows us to identify potential opportunities and interests in children, to help them realize them. This is a good opportunity for organizing interpersonal relationships, between students and the class teacher in the …

A Performance Analysis Of The Belle Ii Detector, John Stacy May 2022

A Performance Analysis Of The Belle Ii Detector, John Stacy

Honors Theses

The Belle II experiment has recently (2018) started data taking at the SuperKEKB electron-positron collider in Tsukuba, Japan. Detector performance studies are necessary to understand early data and prepare for more complex analyses. This study of the proton detection efficiency of the Belle II detector compares real and simulated data to find discrepancies with the intention to provide useful information for detector and calibration experts to better gauge detector performance. It also attempts to improve the characterization of proton identification efficiency at low momenta, which performs poorly under the current fitting model. This helps analysts exploring final states that include …

Monte Carlo Study Of Lepton Flavor Universality Violation In B Decays With Belle Ii Simulation, Sakul Mahat

Honors Theses

Belle II, the first super B-Factory experiment, is designed to make precise measurements of weak interaction parameters and search for New Physics beyond the Standard Model of particle physics. The Standard Model of particle physics is a theory that classifies all known elementary particles and describes three of the four known fundamental forces in the universe. Physics beyond the Standard Model that addresses the theoretical developments needed to explain the deficiencies in the Standard Model is often referred to as New Physics. One of the assumptions of the Standard Model is that the couplings of particles that mediate the weak …

Electromagnetic Detectability Of Binary Supermassive Black Holes, Kaylee Grace May 2022

Electromagnetic Detectability Of Binary Supermassive Black Holes, Kaylee Grace

Honors Scholar Theses

Supermassive black hole (SMBH) binaries can be produced by galaxy mergers and are important sources of gravitational waves. Although several binary candidates have been identified in previous work, none have yet been fully confirmed. These pairs are difficult to detect, since single accreting SMBHs can have pseudo-periodic lightcurves due to stochastic noise that can mimic the signature of binary SMBHs. The aforementioned lightcurves are the detections we classify as ”false-positive.” The Vera Rubin Observatory (VRO) will be a powerful new tool for detecting binary SMBHs. We determine the false-positive binary detection rate for VRO by attempting to recover sinusoidal binary …

Investigating Gluonic Operators In Coordinate Space, Wayne Henry Morris Iii

Physics Theses & Dissertations

In this dissertation, a method of extracting gluon momentum distributions inside hadrons, and particularly nucleons, is developed. In general, the utility and application of performing calculations in coordinate space at the operator level is discussed, and its application to the method of pseudodistributions in the lattice extraction of parton distributions. An introduction to the background field method and other techniques used in the calculation of corrections to gluon operators are provided. Then, an outline of the calculation of the uncontracted gluon bilocal operator at one-loop is given, and the result thereof. Using the result for the gluon bilocal operator restricted …

Computational Investigations Into Binding Dynamics Of Tau Protein Antibodies: Using Machine Learning And Biophysical Models To Build A Better Reality, Katherine Lee Apr 2022

Computational Investigations Into Binding Dynamics Of Tau Protein Antibodies: Using Machine Learning And Biophysical Models To Build A Better Reality, Katherine Lee

University Scholar Projects

Misregulation of post-translational modifications of microtubule-associated protein tau is implicated in several neurodegenerative diseases including Alzheimer’s disease. Hyperphosphorylation of tau promotes aggregation of tau monomers into filaments which are common in tau-associated pathologies. Therefore, tau is a promising target for therapeutics and diagnostics. Recently, high-affinity, high-specificity single-chain variable fragment (scFv) antibodies against pThr-231 tau were generated and the most promising variant (scFv 3.24) displayed 20-fold increased binding affinity to pThr-231 tau compared to the wild-type. The scFv 3.24 variant contained five point mutations, and intriguingly none were in the tau binding site. The increased affinity was hypothesized to occur due …

Calibration Instrumentation For The Hydrogen Intensity And Real-Time Analysis Experiment, Emily Rita Kuhn

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

The Hydrogen Intensity and Real-time Analysis eXperiment (HIRAX) is a 21 cm neutral hydrogen intensity mapping experiment to be deployed in the Karoo Desert in South Africa. It aims to improve constraints on the dark energy equation of state through measurements of large-scale structure at high redshift, while doubling as a state-of-the-art fast radio burst (FRB) detector. This dissertation focuses on two aspects of the HIRAX instrument characterization: (1) optimizing the signal-to-noise of antennas, through the design and implementation of a custom test-bed for determining the noise temperature of radio antennas operating between 400-800MHz, and (2) mapping the HIRAX telescope …

Measurement Of Correlations Between Neutral Pions And Charged Hadrons With Respect To The Event Plane In Heavy Ion Collisions With Alice, Michael Henry Oliver Apr 2022

Measurement Of Correlations Between Neutral Pions And Charged Hadrons With Respect To The Event Plane In Heavy Ion Collisions With Alice, Michael Henry Oliver

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

In Ultra-Relativistic Heavy Ion collisions, such as those done at the Large HadronCollider (LHC) and Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC), the high energy densities create an exotic state of matter not seen since the first few microseconds past the Big Bang, a Quark Gluon Plasma (QGP) where quarks and gluons are not confined into hadronic bound states. The properties and evolution of this matter can be studied using a naturally existing probe: the hard QCD (Quantum Chromo-Dynamics) jets that are produced in partonic hard scatters at the beginning of the collisions. Similarly to the x-rays in medical Computed Tomography, the …

Computational Studies Of Packing And Jamming In Biological Systems, John Durkin Treado Apr 2022

Computational Studies Of Packing And Jamming In Biological Systems, John Durkin Treado

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

The application of coarse-grained computational models to the study of physical systems has explodedin recent years, in part due to the relative simplicity of such models compared to the drastic complexity that can be found in the natural world. These models have been of particular use to the study of biological systems, as living things are typically highly complex and live far from thermodynamic equilibrium. In this thesis, I will present several coarse-grained computational models of different biological systems with the aim of identifying the role physical constraints, in particular those of packing and jamming, play in different biological systems. …

Of the outstanding problems in astronomy, the nature of dark matter is certainly one of the most mysterious. Containing five times more energy density than its luminous counterpart, dark matter has been shaping the large-scale structure of our Universe for billions of years. The expansion of accessible and accurate cosmological simulations has revolutionized how we visualize the imprint of dark matter in the structure of our Universe. In my Ph.D., I contributed to this revolution through the development and implementation of a new code, chplUltra: a parallel, portable, and efficient tool for HPC simulations of a promising dark matter candidate, …

Resonances And Fundamental Bounds In Wave Scattering, Hanwen Zhang Apr 2022

Resonances And Fundamental Bounds In Wave Scattering, Hanwen Zhang

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

In this thesis, we develop a framework for analyzing light-matter interaction by resonances, explore power concentration limits in wave scattering, and discover fundamental bounds of quantum state controls via pulse engineering. We use quasinormal modes to develop an exact, ab initio generalized coupled-mode theory from Maxwell’s equations. This quasinormal coupled-mode theory, which we de- note “QCMT”, enables a direct, mode-based construction of scattering matrices without resorting to external solvers or data. We consider canonical scattering bodies, for which we show that a conventional coupled-mode theory model will necessarily be highly inaccurate, whereas QCMT exhibits near-perfect accuracy. We generalize classical brightness …

First-Principles-Based Modeling Of Energy Converting Properties Of Conventional And Emerging Ferroelectrics, Maggie Kingsland Mar 2022

First-Principles-Based Modeling Of Energy Converting Properties Of Conventional And Emerging Ferroelectrics, Maggie Kingsland

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Ferroelectric materials are a type of multifunctional material that exhibit spontaneous polarization reversable by the application of an electric field. They are used in many technologies such as ferroelectric RAM (FeRAM), piezoelectric devices, RFID chips, and capacitors. However, the most commonly used ferroelectrics are often made with rare, expensive elements and are not environmentally friendly. For example, many prototypical ferroelectrics contain elements such as lead, zirconium, and titanium. As technology grows more advanced, there is a need to discover or manufacture cheaper ferroelectrics and to make them less impactful on human health and the earth as a whole. We set …

Framing Human Action In Physics: Valid Reconstruction, Invalid Reduction, Shabnam Mousavi, Shyam Sunder Mar 2022

Framing Human Action In Physics: Valid Reconstruction, Invalid Reduction, Shabnam Mousavi, Shyam Sunder

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

We propose framing human action in physics before reaching to biology and social sciences, rearranging the order of their usual deployment. As an example, consider efforts to model altruism that start in a frame of psychological or social attributes such as reciprocity, empathy, and identity. Evolutionary roots might also be used by appeal to survival of the species from biology. Only then the modeler abstracts to work on notations, and to establish relationships using mathematical apparatus from physics. This top-down deployment of principles from various scientific disciplines has generated a body of coherent models, partially generalizable theories, and disagreements. In …

Designing An Experimental Apparatus For Rotational Mixing In Stokes Flow, William Bethard, Logan Hennes Jan 2022

Designing An Experimental Apparatus For Rotational Mixing In Stokes Flow, William Bethard, Logan Hennes

Student Presentations

We report on the design, construction, and operation of a rotational mixing apparatus that magnetically rotates a thin metal rod interacting with tracers suspended in a high-viscosity fluid. The purpose of this apparatus is to achieve Stokes flow, defined as having a Reynolds number below 0.001, where viscous forces dominate over inertial forces in a fluid system. The apparatus, designed using 3D modeling software and constructed using additive manufacturing techniques, holds a rod at a fixed angle with a magnetic field and rotates the rod conically about a fixed point. Tracer trajectories within the fluid were tracked using a custom …

Establishing A Machine Learning Framework For Discovering Novel Phononic Crystal Designs, Drew Feltner Jan 2022

Establishing A Machine Learning Framework For Discovering Novel Phononic Crystal Designs, Drew Feltner

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

A phonon is a discrete unit of vibrational motion that occurs in a crystal lattice. Phonons and the frequency at which they propagate play a significant role in the thermal, optical, and electronic properties of a material. A phononic material/device is similar to a photonic material/device, except that it is fabricated to manipulate certain bands of acoustic waves instead of electromagnetic waves. Phononic materials and devices have been studied much less than their photonic analogues and as such current materials exhibit control over a smaller range of frequencies. This study aims to test the viability of machine learning, specifically neural …

Adding the Arduino nano to the drone body then gives the drone capabilities to fly.

Impact Of Proton And Neutron Irradiation On Carrier Transport Properties In Ga2o3, Andrew C. Silverman Jan 2022

Impact Of Proton And Neutron Irradiation On Carrier Transport Properties In Ga2o3, Andrew C. Silverman

Honors Undergraduate Theses

This project studies the properties of minority charge carriers in beta gallium oxide (β -Ga2O3). The behavior of minority carriers is of high importance as it greatly affects conduction and consequently device performance. Cathodoluminescence (CL) spectroscopy and EBIC (Electron Beam Induced Current) are the main experimental techniques used to study minority carrier behavior.

High energy radiation affects minority carrier properties through damage to the material and through the production of carrier traps that reduce the conductivity and mobility of the material. In this investigation, we study the effects of various kinds of high energy radiation on …
