Two-Loop Soft Anomalous Dimensions For Single Top Quark Associated Production With A W- Or H-, Nikolaos Kidonakis Sep 2010

Two-Loop Soft Anomalous Dimensions For Single Top Quark Associated Production With A W- Or H-, Nikolaos Kidonakis

Faculty Articles

I present results for the two-loop soft anomalous dimensions for associated production of a single top quark with a W boson or a charged Higgs boson. The calculation uses expressions for the massive cusp anomalous dimension, which are presented in different forms, and it allows soft-gluon resummation at next-to-next-to-leading-logarithm (NNLL) accuracy. From the NNLL resummed cross section I derive approximate NNLO cross sections for bg→tW- and bg→tH- at LHC energies of 7, 10, and 14 TeV.

Space-Time Properties Of A Boson-Dressed Fermion For The Yukawa Model, R E. Wagner, M R. Ware, Q Su, Rainer Grobe Sep 2010

Space-Time Properties Of A Boson-Dressed Fermion For The Yukawa Model, R E. Wagner, M R. Ware, Q Su, Rainer Grobe

Faculty publications – Physics

We analyze the interaction of fermions and bosons through a one-dimensional Yukawa model. We numerically compute the energy eigenstates that represent a physical fermion, which is a superposition of bare fermionic and bosonic eigenstates of the uncoupled Hamiltonian. It turns out that even fast bare fermions require only low-momentum dressing bosons, which attach themselves to the fast fermion through quantum correlations. We compare the space-time evolution of a physical fermion with that of its bare counterpart and show the importance of using dressed observables. The time evolution of the center of mass as well as the wave packet's spatial width …

Time-Resolved Compton Scattering For A Model Fermion-Boson System, R E. Wagner, Rainer Grobe, Q Su

Faculty publications – Physics

We study the scattering of a boson with a fermion with full spatial and temporal resolution based on the one-dimensional Yukawa Hamiltonian. In quantum field theory this interaction is described by the annihilation and creation of bosons with intermediate virtual particle states. We show that this process can be modeled in the center-of-mass frame by a scattering potential, permitting us to interpret the absorption and re-emission processes in quantum mechanical terms of a characteristic force. This Compton force between the fermion and boson is repulsive for large distances and attractive for shorter spacings. We also examine the periodic dynamics of …

Understanding Nanoscale Magnetization Reversal And Spin Dynamics By Using Advanced Transmission Electron Microscopy, Lei Huang

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

In the forefront of spintronics research, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) is not only an essential tool for examining matter with high spatial resolution, but also associated with it is a rich variety of in-situ capabilities making quantitative investigation of the intriguing microscopic magnetic phenomena possible. This dissertation covers TEM studies of nanoscale magnetization reversal and high frequency spin dynamics of patterned magnetic elements, which hold great promise for the development of next generation recording/memory technologies. We first focus on the static spin configurations and magnetization reversal processes of patterned soft magnetic thin films. Using in-situ Lorentz microscopy and off-axis electron holography, …

Sph Simulations Of Spiral Galaxy Interarm Structure, Joern Wilhelm Aug 2010

Sph Simulations Of Spiral Galaxy Interarm Structure, Joern Wilhelm

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

This work investigates the growth of substructures in spiral galaxies using Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics(SPH) simulations. The impact of varying spiral arm potentials, gas temperatures and numerical resolutions onto interarm features, observed as feathering, is studied and compared to predictions made by the K-H instability model by Wada and Koda(2004) and the clump shearing model by Dobbs and Bonnell(2006). They are also compared to a recent Archival HST survey of Spiral Galaxy Feathering. The interarm featuresseen in SPH and relative pressure SPH(rpSPH) simulations, are found to be overall similar to observed feathers. High temperatures decreases velocity shear in the spiral arm …

Survey Of Meteorite Samples For 92nb, 98tc, And 60fe Using Gamma Ray Spectroscopy, Robert Maxwell Jun 2010

Survey Of Meteorite Samples For 92nb, 98tc, And 60fe Using Gamma Ray Spectroscopy, Robert Maxwell

Physics

The focus of this senior project was the use of gamma ray spectroscopy to survey meteorite samples for 92Nb, 98Tc, and 60Fe. The presence of measurable amounts of 26Al (half-life 717,000 years) in meteorites leads astrophysists to believe that 92Nb, 98Tc, and 60Fe should also be present in detectable amounts, though they have not yet been conclusively found. Since the isotopes that were looked for in this senior project are not long lived in comparison to the age of the solar system, their presumed presence indicates that they are continuously being made in outer space and deposited on space objects.

Modeling And Detection Of Uterine Contractions Using Magnetomyography, Patricio La Rosa May 2010

Modeling And Detection Of Uterine Contractions Using Magnetomyography, Patricio La Rosa

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

In this dissertation, we develop a novel mathematical framework for modeling and analyzing uterine contractions using biomagnetic measurements. The study of myometrium contractility during pregnancy is relevant to the field of reproductive assessment. Its clinical importance is grounded in the need for a better understanding of the bioreproduction mechanisms. For example, in the last decade the number of preterm labors has increased significantly. Preterm birth can cause health problems or even be fatal for the fetus if it happens too early, and, at the same time, it imposes significant financial burdens on health care systems. Therefore, it is critical to …

Exponential Enhancement Of Field-Induced Pair Creation From The Bosonic Vacuum, R E. Wagner, M R. Ware, Q Su, Rainer Grobe May 2010

Exponential Enhancement Of Field-Induced Pair Creation From The Bosonic Vacuum, R E. Wagner, M R. Ware, Q Su, Rainer Grobe

Faculty publications – Physics

Using numerical solutions to quantum field theory, the creation of boson-antiboson pairs from the vacuum under a very strong localized external electric field is explored. The simulations reveal that the initial linear increase of the number of particles turns into an exponential growth. This self-amplification can be understood as the result of the interaction of the previously generated particles with the creation process. While the number of particles keeps increasing, the spatial shape of the (normalized) charge density of the created particles reaches a universal form that can be related to the bound states of the supercritical potential well. We …

Neutrosophic Physics: More Problems, More Solutions, Florentin Smarandache May 2010

Neutrosophic Physics: More Problems, More Solutions, Florentin Smarandache

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

When considering the laws of theoretical physics, one of the physicists says that these laws – the actual expressions of the laws of mathematics and logics being applied to physical phenomena – should be limited according to the physical meaning we attribute to the phenomena. In other word, there is an opinion that a theoretical physicist should put some limitations onto mathematics, in order to “reduce” it to the observed reality. No doubt, we can do it. However, if following this way, we would arrive at only mathematical models of already known physical phenomena. Of course, this might be useful …

Design Of Electronics For A High-Energy Photon Tagger For The Gluex Experiment, Mitchell "Woody" Underwood May 2010

Design Of Electronics For A High-Energy Photon Tagger For The Gluex Experiment, Mitchell "Woody" Underwood

Honors Scholar Theses

In quantum chromodynamics (QCD), quarks and antiquarks are held together inside hadrons by the nuclear strong force, which is mediated by exchange particles known as gluons. The simplest type of hadron, the meson, consists of a single quark and a single antiquark bound by a gluonic field. The flux-tube model of QCD says that this gluonic field forms a tube of color-electric field lines between the quark and the antiquark which can under the right conditions be made to vibrate. Such mesons with excited glue are called hybrid mesons.

GlueX is a high-energy nuclear physics experiment which will study hybrid …

Bosonic Analog Of The Klein Paradox, R E. Wagner, M R. Ware, Q Su, Rainer Grobe Feb 2010

Bosonic Analog Of The Klein Paradox, R E. Wagner, M R. Ware, Q Su, Rainer Grobe

Faculty publications – Physics

The standard Klein paradox describes how an incoming electron scatters off a supercritical electrostatic barrier that is so strong that it can generate electron- positron pairs. This fermionic system has been widely discussed in textbooks to illustrate some of the discrepancies between quantum mechanical and quantum field theoretical descriptions for the pair creation process. We compare the fermionic dynamics with that of the corresponding bosonic system. We point out that the direct counterpart of the Pauli exclusion principle (the central mechanism to resolve the fermionic Klein paradox) is stimulated emission, which leads to the resolution of the analogous bosonic paradox.

A Model For Predicting Extragalactic Jet Lifetimes, Daniel S. Spicer, Robert Bingham, Stephen O'Sullivan Jan 2010

A Model For Predicting Extragalactic Jet Lifetimes, Daniel S. Spicer, Robert Bingham, Stephen O'Sullivan

Articles

Abstract. In this letter, we propose a model to explain the disintegration of ex- tragalactic jets and to predict the associated timescale. The model assumes that a jet is current and charge neutral as well as collimated at its source; however, the forward electron current gradually decays producing a magnetic field transverse to the direction of jet propagation. This growing transverse magnetic field eventually causes the jet to disintegrate.

Optical Properties Of Noble Metal Nanoparticles In Dielectric Thin Films, Robin Jacobs-Gedrim Jan 2010

Optical Properties Of Noble Metal Nanoparticles In Dielectric Thin Films, Robin Jacobs-Gedrim

Theses & ETDs

This study investigates methods for modification of the size, shape and arrangement of noble metal nanoparticles (NPs) in dielectric thin films including laser irradiation and thermal annealing in conjunction with the application of a DC electric field. Laser irradiation of Au NPs in SiO2 were shown to slightly increase in radius, from 2.4 0.8 nm to 2.9 0.9 nm. Application of simultaneous thermal annealing and a strong DC electric field to Ag particles were shown to induce optical dichroism which might indicate a modification of the arrangement of the NPs in the film. Experimental methods for studying metal NPs include …

Micro-Raman Study Of Filled Double-Walled Carbon Nanotubes, Tom Hartsfield

Theses & ETDs

Carbon nanotubes are quickly becoming a very important subject both in physics/materials research and direct industrial application. Their unique electronic and material properties (such as the greatest tensile strength of any known material) create interest both for physicists probing nature and engineers in need of high performance materials. In this work studied the effects of filling carbon nanotubes with four guest materials: Tellurium, Selenium, HgTe and PbI2. Raman spectra were taken of all these materials at a range of temperatures between 80 Kelvin and 730 Kelvin and compared to spectra taken from unfilled carbon nanotubes. Spectral features were mathematically fitted …

Theses & ETDs

A method for measuring the thickness and refractive index of a transparent thin film by analyzing the reflectance spectra is developed. An overview of spin coating is presented, followed by a method for measuring film thickness by atomic force microscopy. The theory for finding the thickness or the refractive index of a film and refractive index of the substrate is developed, followed by experimental results for polystyrene thin films on glass substrates.

Bimodule Categories And Monoidal 2-Structure, Justin Greenough Jan 2010

Bimodule Categories And Monoidal 2-Structure, Justin Greenough

Doctoral Dissertations

We define a notion of tensor product of bimodule categories and prove that with this product the 2-category of C -bimodule categories for fixed tensor C is a monoidal 2-category in the sense of Kapranov and Voevodsky ([KV91]). We then provide a monoidal-structure preserving 2-equivalence between the 2-category of C -bimodule categories and Z( C )-module categories (module categories over the center of C ). The (braided) tensor structure of C1⊠D C2 for (braided) fusion categories over braided fusion D is introduced. For a finite group G we show that de-equivariantization is equivalent to the tensor product over Rep( G). …

Microstructural Evolution Of Sputtered Phase Segregated Metal Composite Thin Films, Dana I. Filoti Jan 2010

Microstructural Evolution Of Sputtered Phase Segregated Metal Composite Thin Films, Dana I. Filoti

Doctoral Dissertations

In this thesis, we present the first comparative study of crystallographic texture development in three different types of metal thin film composites: fully miscible (Au-Ag), slightly immiscible (Cu-Ag) and immiscible (Au-SiO 2). Texture development refers to the distribution of orientations of crystallites in polycrystalline thin films, and is an important part of the microstructure that determines thin film properties. A material's crystallographic texture needs to be understood because of its sensitivity to the energetic growth conditions. By controlling the microstructure, a material can be tailored to specific applications. We investigated in comparison the texture and microstructure evolution in metal composite …

Von Neumann Algebras, Affiliated Operators And Representations Of The Heisenberg Relation, Zhe Liu Jan 2010

Von Neumann Algebras, Affiliated Operators And Representations Of The Heisenberg Relation, Zhe Liu

Doctoral Dissertations

Von Neumann algebras are self-adjoint, strong-operator closed subalgebras (containing the identity operator) of the algebra of all bounded operators on a Hilbert space. Factors are von Neumann algebras whose centers consist of scalar multiples of the identity operator. In this thesis, we study unbounded operators affiliated with finite von Neumann algebras, in particular, factors of Type II1. Such unbounded operators permit all the formal algebraic manipulations used by the founders of quantum mechanics in their mathematical formulation, and surprisingly, they form an algebra. The operators affiliated with an infinite von Neumann algebra never form such an algebra. The Heisenberg commutation …

An Analysis Of Science Content And Representations In Introductory College Physics Textbooks And Multimodal Learning Resources, Suzanne Mary Donnelly Jan 2010

An Analysis Of Science Content And Representations In Introductory College Physics Textbooks And Multimodal Learning Resources, Suzanne Mary Donnelly

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

This study features a comparative descriptive analysis of the physics content and representations surrounding the first law of thermodynamics as presented in four widely used introductory college physics textbooks representing each of four physics textbook categories (calculus-based, algebra/trigonometry-based, conceptual, and technical/applied). Introducing and employing a newly developed theoretical framework, multimodal generative learning theory (MGLT), an analysis of the multimodal characteristics of textbook and multimedia representations of physics principles was conducted. The modal affordances of textbook representations were identified, characterized, and compared across the four physics textbook categories in the context of their support of problem-solving.

Dynamics Of Entanglement Between A Quantum Dot Spin Qubit And A Photon Qubit Inside A Semiconductor High-Q Nanocavity, Hubert Pascal Seigneur, Gabriel Gonzalez, Michael Niklaus Leuenberger, Winston Vaughan Schoenfeld Jan 2010

Dynamics Of Entanglement Between A Quantum Dot Spin Qubit And A Photon Qubit Inside A Semiconductor High-Q Nanocavity, Hubert Pascal Seigneur, Gabriel Gonzalez, Michael Niklaus Leuenberger, Winston Vaughan Schoenfeld

Faculty Bibliography 2010s

We investigate in this paper the dynamics of entanglement between a QD spin qubit and a single photon qubit inside a quantum network node, as well as its robustness against various decoherence processes. First, the entanglement dynamics is considered without decoherence. In the small detuning regime (Delta = 78 mu eV), there are three different conditions for maximum entanglement, which occur after 71, 93, and 116 picoseconds of interaction time. In the large detuning regime (Delta = 1.5 meV), there is only one peak for maximum entanglement occurring at 625 picoseconds. Second, the entanglement dynamics is considered with decoherence by …
