Finding My Place Among The Grits And Liver Mush, Office Of University Communications, Erik Barr

Gardner-Webb NewsCenter Archive

One of my first experiences at Gardner-Webb University was trying to “pull” on a door clearly marked “push.” As a master of first impressions, I was trying to go into the Snack Shop restaurant across the street from campus with a small group of people I had just met. One of the waitresses, hiding a smirk, motioned for me to push.

Professor Erwin Surrency laments the fact that "all too few of [the law book dealers] have been preserved."¹ One of the least known law booksellers of the early Republic era was Patrick Byrne. Unlikely Partners: Collaboration Between Colonizationists And Radical Abolitionists In Washington County, Pennsylvania, During The 1830s, Joseph Andrew Smydo

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In the scholarly literature, colonizationists and radical abolitionists are portrayed as composing perpetually warring camps. While that may have been true at the state and national levels of the movements, the evidence suggests that the relationship between the groups was much more fluid at the grassroots. In Washington County, Pennsylvania, colonizationists and radical abolitionists cooperated on various community-development initiatives during the 1830s. Slavery was important to these community elites. But other issues were just as important to them, if not more.

"Where We May Oftener Converse Together": Translation Of Written And Spoken Communication In Colonial Pennsylvania, Jenna E. Fleming

The Gettysburg Historical Journal

In this paper I examine the differences between colonists’ and Indians’ perceptions and use of language in early Pennsylvania. Through consideration of translation challenges in both spoken and written contexts, I conclude that while residents of the region created systems for coping with linguistic issues, basic disparities between native and colonial forms of communication persisted in complicating diplomatic relations. The title of the paper is taken from the August 26, 1758 entry in The Journal of Christian Frederick Post and is part of the Pennsylvanian government’s proposal for closer relations with Indians.

The Best Poor Man's Country?: William Penn, Quakers, And Unfree Labor In Atlantic Pennsylvania, Peter B. Kotowski

Dissertations

William Penn’s writings famously emphasized notions of egalitarianism, just governance, and moderation in economic pursuits. Twentieth-century scholars took Penn’s rhetoric at his word and interpreted colonial Pennsylvania as nothing less than “the best poor man’s country,” as reflected in the title of one of the most popular histories of the colony. They also imagined a world where all men had access to economic opportunity and lived free from the barbarity endemic to Atlantic world colonies. Despite this halcyon vision of the Peaceable Kingdom, the reality was the opposite: a colony where religious convictions justified what we today (and radicals then) …

Right Ventricular Dysfunction After Resuscitation Predicts Poor Outcomes In Cardiac Arrest Patients Independent Of Left Ventricular Function., Vimal Ramjee, Anne V. Grossestreuer, Yuan Yao, Sarah M. Perman, Marion Leary, James N. Kirkpatrick, Paul R. Forfia, Daniel M. Kolansky, Benjamin S. Abella, David F. Gaieski

Department of Emergency Medicine Faculty Papers

OBJECTIVE: Determination of clinical outcomes following resuscitation from cardiac arrest remains elusive in the immediate post-arrest period. Echocardiographic assessment shortly after resuscitation has largely focused on left ventricular (LV) function. We aimed to determine whether post-arrest right ventricular (RV) dysfunction predicts worse survival and poor neurologic outcome in cardiac arrest patients, independent of LV dysfunction.

METHODS: A single-center, retrospective cohort study at a tertiary care university hospital participating in the Penn Alliance for Therapeutic Hypothermia (PATH) Registry between 2000 and 2012.

PATIENTS: 291 in- and out-of-hospital adult cardiac arrest patients at the University of Pennsylvania who had return of spontaneous …
