Human Kinome In Skeletal Muscle Insulin Resistance, Yue Qi Jan 2017

Human Kinome In Skeletal Muscle Insulin Resistance, Yue Qi

Wayne State University Dissertations

Protein kinases play fundamental roles in regulation of biological processes and functions, such as insulin signaling and glucose metabolism. Dysregulation of protein kinases may cause impaired cell signaling and human diseases, such as metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes (T2D). Skeletal muscle is the main site responsible for insulin-stimulated glucose disposal, and insulin resistance in skeletal muscle is one of the key features of the pathogenesis of T2D. Therefore, malfunction of protein kinases and their interaction proteins may contribute to the molecular mechanism of insulin resistance in human skeletal muscle. However, no large scale profiling study has been reported to …

Contributors To Processing Speed Deficit In Old Age: A Focus On History Of Obesity And Medical Conditions, Melissa E. Pulcini Jan 2017

Contributors To Processing Speed Deficit In Old Age: A Focus On History Of Obesity And Medical Conditions, Melissa E. Pulcini

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Obesity has been associated with impairment in most cognitive domains, but the nature of this relationship is unclear. Most studies have examined the relationship between cognitive impairment and current obesity and/or history of obesity-related medical conditions. However, a number of “lower-level” obesity factors (e.g., increased adipokines, low grade inflammation, chronic mild hypoventilation) are present even among the otherwise healthy obese population, and it is possible that many of these factors have differential impact on cognition according to magnitude and duration of exposure. Knowledge of a person’s weight history, which may serve as a proxy for a number of lower-level obesity …

Copyright © 2017 Dimitrios Papandreou et al. Background: The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between metabolic syndrome (MS) and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in obese children. One hundred and twenty-five subjects aged 11-12 years old participated in the study. Methods: Anthropometric and biochemical indices were measured, including lipid and liver profile, blood glucose, serum insulin, and liver ultrasound. Results: Forty-four children (58.6%) were found to have MS. Insulin resistance was present in 78 (62.4%) children. Patients with MS were more likely to have NAFLD (P <; 0.001). Children with NAFLD had significantly higher body mass index, waist circumference, triglycerides, fasting insulin, and lower high-density lipoprotein compared to patients with normal livers (P < 0.001). Insulin resistance was significantly higher in children with NAFLD (P <; 0.001). Obese children presenting with MS were 3.01 (2.87-3.57, P < 0.002) times more likely to develop NAFLD compared to those without metabolic syndrome after adjustment of cofounders. Conclusions: Obese children with MS have a higher risk of developing NAFLD. Weight management and early prevention should be the first line of treatment to prevent any possible health issues later on.

Reducing Acute Cardiovascular Hospitalizations With A Weight Management Program (Reach), Laura A. Graham

All ETDs from UAB

Reducing cardiovascular (CVD) risk factors such as obesity through lifestyle and behavioral interventions like weight management programs should result in better cardiovascular health. However, there is conflicting evidence on the effectiveness of these interventions in reducing long-term CVD outcomes such as acute myocardial infarction or stroke. This reflects an important gap in our understanding about factors affecting recruitment and engagement in these programs and how these factors relate to improvement in long-term cardiovascular health. To address this gap, we will use a retrospective study with up to 11 years of follow up data from the nation’s largest health care system-associated …
