Maternal Obesity And Fetal Macrosomia: An Integrative Review Of The Literature Regarding Interventions, Charity Stalcup
Senior Honors Theses
Research suggests pre-pregnancy obesity is associated with an increased risk of macrosomia in the newborn. Since women are expected to gain weight during pregnancy, the standard recommendation of weight loss for obesity is not ideal for this population. In this systematic review of the literature regarding interventions for maternal obesity to reduce fetal macrosomia, 149 articles were screened using three different databases to identify recent randomized controlled trials related to this topic. A total of 11 full text articles were analyzed and included in the review. The articles addressed nutritional, lifestyle, and pharmacological interventions. The results indicated there is currently …

Correcting For The Inconveniences Of Cultivation: Foraging As A Food Source In Southwestern Burkina Faso, Julia Deryn Morgan
Geography Honors Projects
Malnutrition is an important public health issue in Burkina Faso where 30 % of children are underweight for their age and 92% suffer from iron deficiency. Such statistics indicate that there is a significant lack of adequate nutrition in the country. With approximately 80% of the population employed in the agricultural sector, development projects have focused on increasing agricultural production and commercializing output to ameliorate poor nutrition. However, this strategy ignores the importance of local knowledge and food traditions, most notably by neglecting to acknowledge foraging as a significant source of food. To address this concern, I seek to understand …

Surveys and validated Mediterranean Diet score questionnaires were completed by 933 undergraduates in HLTH 1520: Healthful Living at Georgia Southern University. Participants self-reported following various diets including decreased or increased carbohydrate, increased protein, and increased water intake. No one specifically reported following a Mediterranean Diet and total calculated Mediterranean Diet scores were low …

A Multi-Ingredient Dietary Supplement To Improve Growth And Development Of Small For Gestational Age Infants: Concept-Testing Using Newborn Pigs, Taisiya Yakimkova
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Approximately 10% of all neonates are born small for gestational age (SGA) and current feeding approaches increase adiposity and the risk of developing metabolic disorders, such as obesity and diabetes. This study determined if supplementing formula with a combination of leucine, medium chain triglyceride oil, and krill oil would promote gain of lean body mass using newborn SGA term pigs as a model for SGA infants. At birth, SGA pigs have relatively smaller livers and spleens (g/kg) than appropriate for gestational age (AGA) pigs and have higher serum values for alanine aminotransferase, creatine kinase, and lactate dehydrogenase. Newborn SGA pigs …

Fueling The Competition: Exploring Individual Events Competitors' Nutritional Choices, Anne Kerber
Fueling The Competition: Exploring Individual Events Competitors' Nutritional Choices, Anne Kerber
Speaker & Gavel
Despite ongoing scholarly conversations surrounding the health of forensic competitors and educators, there remains a dearth of published research demonstrating the impact of efforts to improve the activity’s wellness environment. Additionally, the dialogue has primarily focused on educators’ perspectives, obscuring how students’ participation in forensics influences their health behaviors as well as how they experience initiatives to improve wellness. This study aims to address the literature gaps, using the Coordinated Management of Meaning theory to analyze how forensic competitors account for their nutritional judgments during tournaments. Competition emerged as a logical force that not only guides students’ nutritional choices, but …

METHODS: We measured fasted body weight (BW), crown-to-rump length (CRL), body-mass index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC) from 2000 to 2015. We used a …
