How Irish Food Criticism Reflected And Helped Shape A Changing Nation, 1988-2008, Diarmuid Cawley, Claire O' Mahony

Articles

The Crawford Path In The News: White Mountain History And The Communications Revolutions, Susan Schibanoff Mar 2021

The Crawford Path In The News: White Mountain History And The Communications Revolutions, Susan Schibanoff

Appalachia

By 1820, at least 50 newspapers were being published in New Hampshire, and that number doubled within a few decades. The communications revolution and the rapid expansion of newspapers in the White Mountains of New Hampshire has been an underused resource for historians. The 21st-century digital revolution has made those paper accessible, and they tell the story of the oldest continually maintained footpath in America, the Crawford Path.

American Media Depiction Of Terrorism In The U.S After September 11 Attacks, Maria Thuy Trinh

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this dissertation was to analyze perceptions of terrorism through the analysis of two newspapers’ news coverage of terrorism after the September 11 attacks, a popular Kentucky newspaper, the Courier-Journal and the New York Times (NYT). The social construction of terrorism was reflected as a problem through moral panics or something that a society believed as wrong that needed to be eradicated. Previous research had found that newspapers have contributed to moral panics by exaggerating the scope of social problems such as school shootings. I used the theoretical framework of moral panics; Goode and Ben-Yehuda’s (2009) two criteria …

Hidden Power: Journalistic Representations Of Mental Health Labels, Elise Anguizola Assaf

Education (PhD) Dissertations

Individuals with disabilities make up the largest minority group in the U.S., and the language used to construct representations of these individuals has the ability to perpetuate or diminish stereotypes about these individuals. The purpose of this case study was to explore and describe the representations of mental health in online newspaper articles published by three national publications – The Washington Post, The New York Times, and USA Today. Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) was used as the methodological framework, including an analysis of semiotic choices, dominant perspectives, and causality. The case study allowed for data collection using …
