Understanding Service Utilization Within Co-Occurring Population, Ildelisa M. Zapata
Understanding Service Utilization Within Co-Occurring Population, Ildelisa M. Zapata
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
A specialized system of care for co-occurring clients can be an asset to this population, if the services offered deliver adequate results that contribute to the overall wellbeing of this community. Therefore, providers, including social workers and other professionals to determine the effectiveness of these programs, should routinely assess established programs that are design to meet the most basic needs of co-occurring populations. This will permit an increase the knowledge and understanding of outcomes and perhaps develop alternative resources to connect gaps in the delivery of services. This research evaluated the effectiveness of services that co-occurring clients received from Cedar …

Beliefs About Mental Health Services Among Emerging Adult Latinos, Ashley Maxine Cortez
Beliefs About Mental Health Services Among Emerging Adult Latinos, Ashley Maxine Cortez
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
Latino populations continue to utilize mental health services at lower rates than their non-Latino counterparts. This is concerning for several reasons. Mental illness, is extremely prevalent in the general population. The population of Latinos (particularly younger individuals) in the United States is rapidly increasing. Acculturation has been found to negatively impact mental health issues in Latino populations. And finally, emerging adult’s unmet mental health needs / issues place them at risk for failing to adapt to adult roles, impacting their lives in many ways. This mixed methods study implores primarily quantitative design and includes two qualitative questions to explore the …

Psychological Abuse, Mental Health, And Acceptance Of Dating Violence Among Adolescents, Jeff R. Temple, Hye Jeong Choi, Joanna Elmquist, Michael L. Hecht, Michelle Miller-Day, Gregory L. Stuart, Meagan Brem, Caitlin Wolford-Clevenger
Communication Faculty Articles and Research
Purpose
Existing literature indicates that acceptance of dating violence is a significant and robust risk factor for psychological dating abuse perpetration. Past work also indicates a significant relationship between psychological dating abuse perpetration and poor mental health. However, no known research has examined the relationship between acceptance of dating violence, perpetration of dating abuse, and mental health. In addition to exploring this complex relationship, the present study examines whether psychological abuse perpetration mediates the relationship between acceptance of dating violence and mental health (i.e., internalizing symptoms of depression, anxiety, and hostility).

Mindfulness-Based Intervention For Perinatal Grief Education And Reduction Among Poor Women In Chhattisgarh, India: A Pilot Study, Lisa R. Roberts, Susanne B. Montgomery
Interdisciplinary Journal of Best Practices in Global Development
INTRODUCTION: Stillbirth is a significant public health problem in low to middle income countries and results in perinatal grief, often with negative psychosocial impact. In low-resource settings, such as Chhattisgarh, India, where needs are high, it is imperative to utilize low-cost, effective interventions. Mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) is an empirically sound intervention that has been utilized for a broad range of physical and mental health problems, and is adaptable to specific populations. The main objective of this pilot study was to explore the feasibility and effectiveness of a shortened, culturally adapted mindfulness-based intervention to address the complex grief after stillbirth. …

Social Work Dissertations - Archive
The purpose of this study was to test the mediating effects of resilience and mental health (depression and anxiety) on the relationship between acculturative stress and binge drinking among international students in the United States. International students constitute approximately 4% of the total U.S. higher education population. Between 2014 and 2015, nearly 974,926 international students studied at U.S. colleges and universities. This rapidly increasing population faces multiple stressors such as cultural adjustment, academic pressure, financial concerns, language difficulties, and perceived discrimination. According to Hahn (2010), 22.6% of international students were clinically depressed, which is two times higher than domestic undergraduate …

Protective Sex: How Being In-Tune With Sexuality Protects Young Women, Catherine Elinor Ertel Baggett
Protective Sex: How Being In-Tune With Sexuality Protects Young Women, Catherine Elinor Ertel Baggett
Social Work Theses - Archive
Sexuality has been a widely studied topic which has produced a diverse body of literature covering many different perspectives. However, despite the wealth of knowledge on the topic of sexuality, society maintains a strong taboo on the subject, especially concerning the sexuality of women. Sexual expression is often discouraged in women and used to judge their worth. Coming from a feminist perspective, Objectification Theory (Frederickson & Roberts, 1997) posits that the sexual objectification of women’s bodies, forcing women to value themselves only in terms of how sexually attractive they are to others, has resulted in lower self-esteem and higher instances …

Mind The Gap: The Importance Of Pluralistic Discourse In Computing For Mental Health, R. Jordan Crouser, Morganne Ray Crouser
Computer Science: Faculty Publications
A large amount of HCI research leverages studies from psychology to try to understand how humans work. Unfortunately, there is often a disconnect between the tightly- controlled laboratory studies being referenced and the application of this knowledge in practice. At the same time, many mental health practitioners are beginning to turn toward computational tools to help stretch limited resources and support equitable access to mental healthcare. These efforts could be dramatically enhanced by leveraging what the HCI community has learned about promoting active engagement and designing unobtrusive interfaces. By facilitating collaboration between HCI researchers and practitioners in the field of …

The study used semi-structured interviews with eight community organizers and activists to gather qualitative data providing personal accounts of the possible psychological impact of living near a toxic facility with great political power in the city. The common trend among the narratives was the tendency of the participants to focus on a macro interpretation of how mental health is affected by a corporate giant. A collective sense of …
Supervisory Working Alliance And Job Satisfaction In Community Mental Health Settings, Jennifer Weigelt
Supervisory Working Alliance And Job Satisfaction In Community Mental Health Settings, Jennifer Weigelt
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Researchers have written extensively on many facets of supervision in the counseling profession, including the supervisee benefits associated with a strong supervisory working alliance. While the majority of studies have focused on the working alliance in academic settings with student trainees, there has been a lack of research exploring the role of the supervisory working alliance in workplace settings, where supervision can be different from supervision offered in a university clinic or counseling center. Employee job dissatisfaction has been a problem identified within the mental health workforce. Researchers have identified effective supervision as a mediating factor. The purpose of this …

Gender And Attitudes About Mental Health Help Seeking: Results From National Data, Douglas Wendt, Kevin Shafer
Gender And Attitudes About Mental Health Help Seeking: Results From National Data, Douglas Wendt, Kevin Shafer
Faculty Publications
Men often express less emotion than women do, are hesitant to express weakness, and seek professional help much less frequently than do their female counterparts. The lack of help seeking is common across characteristics such as age, race, ethnicity, and nationality. Authors used data from the 2006 General Social Surveys mental health module to suggest that the gender gap in help seeking may be rooted in attitudes regarding help-seeking behaviors generally. Using structural equation modeling, we linked vignette type (depression and schizophrenia) to the endorsement of help seeking from informal and formal sources. Men showed similar support for informal help …
The Role Of Trauma And Mental Health Problems In The Perpetration Of Intimate Partner Violence In Post-Genocide Rwanda, Sarah Myers Tlapek
The Role Of Trauma And Mental Health Problems In The Perpetration Of Intimate Partner Violence In Post-Genocide Rwanda, Sarah Myers Tlapek
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Exposure to political violence or war is associated with intimate partner violence (IPV) in post-conflict settings (Clark et al., 2010; Gupta, Reed, Kelly, Stein, & Williams, 2012), and civilians and veterans who develop posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) after exposure to combat or violence are more likely to perpetrate violence against an intimate partner (Taft, Watkins, Stafford, Street, & Monson, 2011). Rwandan health professionals estimate that after the 1994 genocide more than one-quarter of the country’s population now suffers from PTSD (Munyandamutsa, Nkubamugisha, Gex-Fabry, & Eytan, 2012). Although the majority of Rwandan women (56%) have experienced IPV in their lifetime (National …
