Dangerous Decisions: An Essay On The Mathematics Of Clinical Violence Prediction And Involuntary Hospitalization, Douglas Mossman Md Jan 1995

Dangerous Decisions: An Essay On The Mathematics Of Clinical Violence Prediction And Involuntary Hospitalization, Douglas Mossman Md

Faculty Articles and Other Publications

This Article has two major purposes. First, it provides a mathematical
description of an ideal procedure for making clinical decisions about patients'
future violence, a description that provides a context for evaluating clinicians'
"dangerousness decisions." For purposes of illustration, the Article uses a specific clinical situation-deciding whether to hospitaize involuntarily a patient
based on his risk of harming another. The Article argues that the decision
involves balancing potential risks to third parties (often the patient's family
members) with the "massive deprivation of liberty and other potential
harms to the patient that could result from confinement. The mathematical
description of the …

True Protection For Persons With Severe Mental Disabilities, Such As Schizophrenia, Involved As Subjects In Research - A Look And Consideration Of The Protection Of Human Subjects , Anne J. Ryan

Journal of Law and Health

This article begins with an in-depth discussion of the UCLA incident followed by the history of protecting human research subjects and a review of the current law intended to protect research participants. Next, it explains the nature of schizophrenia and discusses the topic of schizophrenia and the informed consent process, explaining why persons with schizophrenia warrant more protection than is currently given, especially in the areas of monitoring and informed consent. This article also examines proposed ideas, from various sources, for better protection of the mentally disabled as research subjects. This article concludes with this writer's proposal as to how …

Reducing Burden And Distress In Caregivers Of Dementia Patients., Christopher David Sletten Jan 1995

Reducing Burden And Distress In Caregivers Of Dementia Patients., Christopher David Sletten

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

As the prevalence and diagnosis of dementia have become more clearly delineated, there has been an increasing focus on the consequences of dementia on the family members that care for these individuals. Much of the attention has focused on who provides care and what impact that caregiving has on them. It has been well documented that the patient's family is responsible for much of the caregiving. These caregivers often experience both a physical and psychological impact from their role. Because of these negative consequences, several studies have investigated interventions designed to reduce caregiver distress. Most of these studies have incorporated …

The Relationship Between Daily Stress And Neuropsychological Test Performance., Mark Edward Todd Jan 1995

The Relationship Between Daily Stress And Neuropsychological Test Performance., Mark Edward Todd

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Much research has focused on identifying the causes and risk factors associated with Alzheimer's disease (AD). Surprisingly, stress, which has been implicated in the course of a variety of other diseases, has been generally ignored in research on AD despite the fact that several different areas lend indirect support for a relationship between stress and the progression of AD. In this study, the effect of daily stress on the clinical course of AD was examined. Also, given that no study has examined the effects of daily stress on neuropsychological test performance, this relationship was examined as well. Forty-five out-patients with …

Some Thoughts About Developing Constructive Approaches To Lawyer And Law Student Distress, Peter G. Glenn Jan 1995

Some Thoughts About Developing Constructive Approaches To Lawyer And Law Student Distress, Peter G. Glenn

Journal of Law and Health

I am convinced, on the basis of experience as a teacher at five law schools, that it is possible to establish a law school culture in which the administration and faculty can work effectively to substantially reduce the level of unnecessary law student distress. I believe, however, that accomplishing this on any large scale among the law schools generally might require not only implementation of many of the suggestions of Professors Glesner and Kutulakis, but also that we abandon the ideas that all law schools should be fundamentally similar, built on the model of a large-enrollment major research center, and …

Perceptions Of Discharge Planning Needs : A Study Of Discharge Planning In The Mental Health Setting, Michael P. Finn Jan 1995

Perceptions Of Discharge Planning Needs : A Study Of Discharge Planning In The Mental Health Setting, Michael P. Finn

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Major mental disorder, with prolonged periods of dysfunction that require long term care, is an issue of concern amongst mental health professionals. Although substantial effort and resources are devoted towards returning mentally ill individuals to the community, one of the most distinctive and consistent features of the persistently mentally ill (PMI) is their high rate of readmission to hospital. Existing studies into discharge planning revealed that no research had been undertaken to determine if this is the case in Western Australia. This study sought to investigate perceptions of discharge planning held by patients, carers, nurses and allied health workers involved …

Stress And Health In 1st-Year Law Students: Women Fare Worse, Daniel N. Mcintosh, Julie Keywell, Alan Reifman, Phoebe C. Ellsworth

Articles

The social and psychological consequences of being a female law student may include greater stress and worse health than that experienced by male students. First-year law students at a major state university were surveyed about their physical and psychological health prior to, in the middle of, and at the end of the school year. They were also asked about specific sources of strain (e.g., grades, time pressure) at mid-year. Relative to men, women reported greater strain due to sexism, lack of free time, and lack of time to spend with one’s spouse/partner. Women also displayed more depression and physical symptoms …

Mental Health Crises As A Regional Problem, Roger A. Lohmann Sep 1993

Mental Health Crises As A Regional Problem, Roger A. Lohmann

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

This presentation considers mental health crisis as a regional problem. It discusses the four county region of North Central West Virginia which is the catchment area for Valley Community Mental Health Center. It is based on a study conducted by the author of the need for a revised and integrated crisis management system for the region.

Memory Bias And Body Image Disturbance In Normal Weight Body Dysphoric Women., Jeffrey Duane Baker Jan 1993

Memory Bias And Body Image Disturbance In Normal Weight Body Dysphoric Women., Jeffrey Duane Baker

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Body dysphoria is common in the general population and is thought to be associated with the development of eating disorders. Few studies have examined the role of cognitive processes in normal weight body dysphoric women. This study proposed an associative memory model of body dysphoria. The model predicted an increased memory bias for negative body words and increased body image disturbance in high body dysphoric subjects induced to a depressive mood. Based on the proposed model of body dysphoria, high dysphoric subjects were also predicted to give more depressive/negative body word associates on a word association task. Finally, the Pathfinder …

To Stay At Home: Analysis Of Rights And Recommendations On Procedures For Persons Receiving Mental Health Services In The Community , Janet L. Lowder, Franklin J. Hickman

Journal of Law and Health

Before the pendulum swings back to the use of institutions as the primary treatment modality for persons with severe mental illness, there should be a re-examination of the alternatives available to community care providers to ensure compliance with treatment outside of the hospital. This article will focus on the alternatives available in the Ohio mental health system, which is fundamentally oriented towards community-based treatment, and the effects of this orientation.

Dimensions Of Anxiety And Their Effect On An Aspect Of The Performance Process: Commission Of Mental Errors, Ralph Richard Schoenfeld Edd Jan 1993

Dimensions Of Anxiety And Their Effect On An Aspect Of The Performance Process: Commission Of Mental Errors, Ralph Richard Schoenfeld Edd

Dissertations

The pressure and anxiety of performing well will increase as the importance of winning continues to be stressed in competitive sports. The purpose of this study was to investigate the anxiety-performance relationship in an applied, field-tested manner by examining the relationship between competitive state anxiety and the incidence of mental errors committed under various levels of competition. Male and female elite athletes of the men's and women's basketball teams from the University of Saskatchewan and the University of Regina (Saskatchewan, Canada) made up the subject population for this study. The study utilized the Sport Competition Anxiety Test (SCAT, Martens, 1977) …

Victimization And Homelessness: Cause And Effect, Pamela J. Fischer Mar 1992

Victimization And Homelessness: Cause And Effect, Pamela J. Fischer

New England Journal of Public Policy

The literature on the contemporary homeless population is reviewed to examine the association of victimization with homelessness. Although few studies have specifically focused on victimization, findings derived from studies investigating pathways to homelessness, prevalence of health, mental health, and substance-use disorders, and demographic profiles and life histories suggest that victimization both causes homelessness and is an outcome of losing housing. Causal sequences ending in homelessness most frequently involve domestic violence, which mainly affects women, although other types of abuse may extrude individuals from their established housing. Once they become homeless, the risk of violence escalates for people living on the …

Psychiatric Decisions Regarding Pharmacotherapeutic And Psychotherapeutic Treatments For Clinical Depression, Sheri Hansmeier Cheung Jan 1992

Psychiatric Decisions Regarding Pharmacotherapeutic And Psychotherapeutic Treatments For Clinical Depression, Sheri Hansmeier Cheung

Whittier Scholars Program

The factors involved in deciding which treatments to use with depressed patients are complex and often clouded by conflicting beliefs and statistics. This paper attempts to clarify some of these issues by examining the role of the psychiatrist in the treatment of depression and how different treatment plans may have distinctly different effects on the depressed patient.

Justice, Mental Health, And Therapeutic Jurisprudence, David B. Wexler Jan 1992

Justice, Mental Health, And Therapeutic Jurisprudence, David B. Wexler

Cleveland State Law Review

Mental health law advocates and even scholars have typically been hostile toward, afraid of, or at best indifferent to, the mental health disciplines (mainly psychiatry and psychology) and their practitioners. Learning to be skeptical of supposed scientific expertise is an important lesson, and the law should never simply defer to psychiatry and the related disciplines. But to the extent that the legal system now ignores developments in the mental health disciplines, the lesson of healthy skepticism has been overlearned. It is my thesis, then, that those of us interested in 'justice" in mental health law ought not to adopt the …

"The goal of the research is to produce an explanatory model of how older adults cope with hazardous events through an analysis of behavior patterns and attitudes. Of particular concern are changes in the mental and physical health of older adults, responses and attitudes towards hazard warning systems, and propensities to utilize support services such as federal relief programs."

Elders Caring For Elders: Risk Of Abuse And Neglect?, Marjorie F. Bendik Dnsc, Msn, Rn Mar 1991

Elders Caring For Elders: Risk Of Abuse And Neglect?, Marjorie F. Bendik Dnsc, Msn, Rn

Dissertations

This study was designed to examine the phenomena of mood disturbance and associated potential to abuse in an elderly caregiver population. The data from which the results were obtained came from structured interviews, using quantitative measures, with 110 men and women caregivers aged 55 and over, living at home and caring for another physically or mentally ill elder (usually a spouse or other relative) who was living with them. A causal model was developed to examine the effects of locus of control, social support, physical health, stress perception, and coping efficacy on total mood disturbance and potential to abuse. Standardized …

Rights Within The Therapeutic Relationship, Patricia King Jan 1991

Rights Within The Therapeutic Relationship, Patricia King

Journal of Law and Health

My thesis is that the failure of these rights to be implemented in any meaningful way for persons with mental illness is the result of a narrow image of rights which emphasizes the individual, valuing autonomy independent of care, and sacrifices relationship and the connection to the community. By conceiving of rights in such a way, we strengthen the individual but do not address the reality of the context or relationship within which persons with mental illness will actualize these rights. This failure to recognize and account for the disequilibrium within therapeutic relationships and the necessity of caring within such …
