The Freedom To Be Psychotic, Joram Graf Haber
The Freedom To Be Psychotic, Joram Graf Haber
Journal of Law and Health
The following will examine both involuntary commitment and deinstitutionalization, as well as some recent and rather novel proposals that have been championed by those who advocate neither. I refer here to the so called "Ulysses Contract" as well as to "mandatory out-patient treatment." My concern is primarily with the moral and legal aspects of these practices and to that end will focus on more conceptual matters. I will conclude by defending a concept of freedom which does greater justice to patients' needs than does the one currently employed.

Fordham Urban Law Journal
"Address to the Mental Health Legal Advocacy Symposium, "Current Issues in Law and Psychiatry," New York, New York, May 30, 1985." This speech provides an overview of trends in mental disability law as they evolved from 1972 to 1982. It also explores social, economic, and political developments impacting on mental health advocacy, and looks at both seminal supreme court cases and lower courts' responses. It finds an ambivalent Supreme Court without a clear position on many issues related to mentally disabled individuals.

The Relation Between Daily Stress And Health., Glenn Neil Jones
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The role of stress in the development and exacerbation of physical symptoms has long been a topic of interest. The present investigation attempted to establish if there is an association between the irritants and demands of everyday life--termed minor stressors--and health. In order to investigate the influence of minor stressors on health, it appears necessary (for a number of reasons discussed in the text) to account for the influence of major life events on health and on minor stressors. Both major and minor stressful events were assessed using two approaches: simple frequency counts, and a subjective weighting approach which attempts …

"We surveyed 116 families of the Santa Carolina housing project in Santiago, Chile, approximately 8 months after the March 3rd, 1985 Child earthquake. Our goals were to assess the general mental health impact of the earthquake; to document post-earthquake relocation patterns; and to explore the potential relationship between relocation and mental health."

Religiousness And Mental Health Reconsidered: A Study Of An Intrinsically Religious Sample, Allen E. Bergin, Kevin S. Masters, P. Scott Richards

Despite the existence of strong viewpoints, the relation between religiousness and mental health is not yet clearly understood. The Religious Orientation Scale has provided researchers with a valuable tool for differentiating between intrinsic (/) and extrinsic (E) religious orientations, thereby clarifying some of the confusion in this area. In the present study we assessed correlations between these two scales and anxiety, personality traits, self-control, irrational beliefs, and depression. Results generally indicated that / is negatively correlated with anxiety and positively correlated with self-control and "better" personality functioning, whereas the opposite is true ofE. Correlations were generally not found with irrational …

Mental Health Treatment Of Mentally Ill Persons / Alcoholics / Drug Abusers: Outpatient / Inpatient Procedures, Georgia State University Law Review
Georgia State University Law Review
The Act extensively revises the criteria and procedures for inpatient and outpatient commitment of mentally ill persons, alcoholics, and drug abusers. It allows physicians at community mental health facilities and state hospitals to initiate outpatient treatment for persons not meeting the inpatient criteria but requiring regular treatment to avoid the need for hospitalization. It provides procedures to remove an outpatient who fails to comply with a treatment plan to a mental health facility for treatment before his or her condition requires hospitalization.

"Thirty-nine victims of a natural disaster were interviewed six weeks after tornadoes touched down in their communities in east central Ohio and west central Pennsylvania. Data were gathered as part of a pilot study for a subsequent investigation of mental health help-seeking following natural disasters. The present study hypothesized that perceived availability of social support would moderate the stress associated with the disaster, resulting in a negative correlation with a measure of psychological symptomatology."

"The broad goal of this study was to assess the emotional, cognitive, psychosocial, and behavioral consequences of disasters (in this case, an earthquake) for victims, less directly affected neighbors, and disaster relief workers. Specifically, the present study was designed to examine the process of adaptation to disasters within a larger framework for studying individuals' responses to traumatic life changes."
